New POD book
« on: January 17, 2008, 11:46:25 PM »
A new book which may interest filmwasters, ''The Sentimental Book'' has been put together by a webpal, Stanislav Sinyagin. The mix of pics is quite eclectic; their one common denominator being that he liked them.

While not exclusively film based photographs you'll see that the majority are. The pics were all found online, mainly at  livejournal and flickr communities and then Stan contacted the photographers to ask if they were happy to be included in the book. The result is a great collection of contemporary photography from all corners of the world. (even from Australia)

There is an ongoing frickr group related to this as well. http://www.flickr.com/groups/quiteuseless/

It's  POD from Lulu: http://www.lulu.com/content/1180097 and at the zero profit price of sixteen bucks it'd look pretty good on your coffee table.

Well, after trying to join the flickr group, mentioning that I had found the project through filmwasters, I got this response:

Quote
Your request to join Quite Useless has been declined.

The group administrator gave the following reason:
thanks for letting me know about filmwasters, but I'm sorry to say that i look for a different quality standard

Not sure exactly what that means! ??? Heh, guess flickr is too high class for a lowly filmwaster.

that was me who wrote this to you.  Apart from the moral aspect of publishing personal correspondence, I should say I had to do it in order to keep the standards higher. When you submit your work to a magazine you normally expect that it might be declined. Same thing here in QU

Heh, no worries... just thought it rather strange. Wasn't necessarily looking for publication though.  :)

I was running several photography projects in the internet, and I find this form of a community the most productive one: I select the authors upon entering the community, and let them do whatever they feel right without moderating them. Otherwise I'd have to moderate the postings if I wanted a good content, and that's way too much of work to maintain such a community.

cheers,
stan

Jason, I've seen your work and it's good. I've been in the same situation and  no matter how strong my self esteem I'm always stung if I get a knock-back. Stan's project is unashamedly based on his own personal taste, so yep, it's his call.

There are plenty of *big* name photographers whose work doesn't float my boat- Perhaps that  says more about me than about them? hmmm I dunno.

Certainly. As I had told him privately, I was just a bit confused as to the nature of the project, and by his response...  Think we've cleared everything up though. ;D

And not to take anything away from the actual project; there are certainly some great photos in the flickr group worthy of a look through for anyone interested.
