Red Scale question
« on: August 13, 2021, 06:51:00 PM »
Hi all,
I've confused myself again....
I just re-rolled a roll of fuji Superia 400 to do red scale.
Do I shoot it at ISO 400 or is it best to shoot it at  ISO 200?
Seems that I recall it's a good idea to give it an extra boost, but can't find where I read that.

Ideas? Thoughts? Commiserations welcomed.

I would shoot it between ISO 25 and 50, 3 to 4 stops below box speed.  I just posted some redscale in the weekend thread, Kodak Max 400 shot at ISO 50.  I think I probably should have gone down to 25 with it.

This is the first time I've heard of 'redscale'. So is it just color negative film shot 3-4 stops overexposed through a red filter?

Edit; Ah, never mind. Google to the rescue, looked it up (what I should have done in the first place).

Redscale does need an awful lot of light as you're pushing the photons through the AH layer which is designed to stop light from going through.
3 to 4 stops overexposed sounds reasonable. Though I just checked one of Lomo Kev's books (Kevin Meredith) and in it they suggest only 1 to 2 stops overexposure.

Thing is, the more light you blast through the film the less powerful the redscale effect should be as the different colors of the light will get more photons migrating through the emulsion... at least that's my thinking.

This is Fujifilm Velvia 100, I think I shot it at 12 (3 stops) and it hardly let any light through.  I think that's because slide film has a darker AH layer.  I won't try to redscale slide film again.

This is Kodak Max 400 that I shot at 25 (4 stops), this is the best results for me so far.

It just depends on what film you're using and the results you're looking for.

I must admit that it does give it a post apocalyptic look.
