Wetplate Blues
« on: February 01, 2021, 06:36:04 PM »
I was having a look around the web looking at and about wetplate photographers and came across this guy.
               https://www.timothyduffyphotography.com
He combines two of the things I love, wetplate photography and Blues music. What I particularly like is the way he is documenting the not so well known Bluesmen as well as others in other than studio situations, I imagine that he has some sort of portable dark box that he carts around. Plus I think that taking the shots in wetplate gives it a depth, that a clinical digital or film shot just couldn't achieve to my mind just makes it more interesting.

I wonder how he takes pictures in these darker indoor Locations.  He must be using some strong flash lights, but the lighting looks quite even.

That could simply mean big softboxes.
Or the places are interior but just next to a big window.

I had my portrait done by Gareth Jarvis, https://www.garethjarvis.com/ or https://www.instagram.com/jarvis.photography/

His softbox was huge and hugely powerful.

I'm sure he'd respond if you asked about the electrical tech details.

I have a few friends who shoot wetplate and mostly use large soft boxes or umbrellas. The ISO on wet plates is ridiculously slow, I forget what exactly but it's down around 1, so even in what we would consider well lit situations lights are often used.

This is fantastic! Well worth the time and effort! I must dig out the wetplate that was taken of me and a friend at a festival in 2019!
