Main Forum / Foma Vs. Arista Paper
« Last post by Flippy on April 13, 2024, 11:17:41 PM »
I thought I would post this. I've used Foma papers exclusively since I started printing again. I recently bought a box of Arista paper, which is made by Foma, and said by many online to simply be rebranded Foma products.

However, this does not seem to be the case. Having switched over from a box of Foma VC FB paper to the box of Arista VC FB paper mid way through a print session, I noticed that paper of the Arista brand feels different. The Arista paper feels "flimsier" but also dries slightly flatter. So I presumed the paper base might be to a different specification for Arista, but surely the emulsion is the same. But here too I've noticed a difference. Although the papers expose and develop the same (both giving a slight warm tone in Ilford multigrade developer) the Arista paper requires gentler handling with tongs, it is much easier to damage the coating than it is with the Foma branded paper. This was unexpected. Both papers have the same finish, and both ferrotype the same.

So while Foma makes the Arista EDU papers, their "equivalent" products don't appear to be the same, that is, it's not simply the same product sold in two different boxes. The Arista branded papers appear from my experience to be different. Thought I'd share because I've seen the question asked before and the commonly shared knowledge was that both were the exact same thing. Given the prices are almost the same, I'd be inclined to stick to the Foma brand, all things considered.

Headless sax player. The last shot on my roll of hand-rolled HP5, so light leaks galore 😁

Manuel!
those are fab and remind me of some of those photos you see in homes in Architectural Digest.
Really nice!
I hope you print them and then hang them on your wall...they deserve to be seen.

Bryan I'd love to watch the tippy board the boat day!

I received Kai's this morning. Really beautiful tones on this one.
I just finished gluing mine together. Now trimming, writing, stamping and mailing is left.

Thanks Francois! A week to Canada is not bad, good to see the postal services are not entirely dysfunctional. Here they are cutting cost (increasing profit is a better way to describe it) so we get mail only every other day, and since they make their own rules we get mail three days this week and two days next week and so on.

The latest in my series of "wandering around town, looking for something, anything to finish a test roll so it can go to the lab." From a new (to me) Pentax KX, replacing the one I purchased last summer which turned out to be much worse for wear than I had expected. 35/2.8 SMC-M, Fomapan 100.

Looking at those, it feels like you have some kind of Tardis in your yard 😊

Hi everyone, I found 21 rolls of processed negs/slide film in a cupboard recently and have been going through them slowly during the last week, scanning contact sheets and searching out interesting moments. It's early days so far and they're mostly family snaps made with a Pentax SLR, although there is evidence that I used a homemade lens on some of them (shots 1 and 3 below). Here are a few from the first 2 rolls. All were shot around 2010/2011 on Agfa Ultra 100. The shot of the cross channel ferry was converted to b/w...and TBH, I'm not sure why (even though I only did it 2 days ago) as the original looks pretty cool in colour ;D
