Title: Dates for the first annual FW New York "Hey, I'm walkin' here!" get-together
Post by: 02Pilot on April 30, 2014, 01:33:05 PM
Since the idea of a few New York-area Filmwasters getting together slightly upstate emerged in one of the recent weekend threads, I thought it might be a good idea to start considering possible dates. My initial thoughts would be either the weekend of 17-18 or 24-25 May (the former is probably better for me, but I can likely make the latter work if necessary). I'm going to suggest meeting in Cold Spring, which is right on the Hudson Line about 1.5 hours north of NYC. If we meet late morning (around 10 or so), we would have a bit of time to walk around town before getting some lunch and beer. There would be plenty of time after lunch for more in-town activities or for a hike in the adjacent state park. Or more beer.

So, if you're interested, post here with your thoughts on the dates, times, plans, and anything else that comes to mind.

Sounds great!! So far both weekends are open for me, but I usually get gigs on Saturdays, so I'm going to push for a Sunday. I'm also a notoriously late riser, so how about meeting for lunch (and lunchtime beers, natch) at 12 or 1, and then commencing all photo activities after lunch?

I'm in.  Coming from Princeton, so 10:00 is do-able but only just (I'd need to be on the 6:10 train to Penn Station...) so maybe a bit later would be better.

Later is not a problem. Looks like there's a 10:43 that arrives in Cold Spring at 12:00. Would that work? We could go straight to lunch, then proceed from there.

Very civilized.  I could easily make that.  Now, what camera to bring....?  What kind of shootin' do you have in mind?

There will be a diverse array of choices as far as what you guys want to shoot. The town will be busy on the weekend, so you can shoot street if you like. Lots of turn-of-the-century buildings, so architechture's an option. Plenty of flowers out this time of year if you like macro. The town is right on the river, so you can do landscape; this is doubly true if you're willing to hike to the top of one of the hills in Hudson Highlands park (about 3-4hrs round-trip). If you prefer a less strenuous hike, there are some abandoned buildings from an old estate buried in the woods nearby. If you want to shoot wildlife, there's a bird sanctuary nearby (I've seen several bald eagles near there this year).

None of this stuff is far from town, and all of it is within walking distance.

I shoot street stuff all the time in the city, and there's no nature to speak of here, so I vote for the easy hike/nature/landscape photography option. Though if the town is a pretty hippie town then I might load up some color film and shoot weirdos next to cool buildings.

That's no help--I like ALL those options!  Abandoned buildings sounds nice, though....
Thanks for setting this up 02, great idea!

Not as many wierdos as you might like. On the weekend it will be mostly daytrippers; when the tourists show up the local hippie population goes off to a granola farm or something. Abandoned farm buildings are an easy hour hike or so.

I've done color and B&W - either one will work. Bring extra film, bring multiple cameras - problem solved.

Hike + abandoned buildings sounds like a win. Let's hope it's not raining like it was today  :-\

(How's almond milk? I don't drink soy milk anymore. We'll talk granola at the meet-up :) I'm still tweaking my recipe, but it's pretty good so far!)

Based on responses thus far, I'm going to suggest we pin down the meeting for Sunday 18 May at noon in Cold Spring. Anyone who's interested please post here to confirm so I have an idea of how many people to look out for. If you want to include hiking up to the abandoned buildings, you should wear appropriate footgear and be prepared for an hour or so of moderately strenuous hiking along a dirt trail.

I'll meet you all at the Cold Spring train station - well, technically just beyond it, but close enough for government work. Just walk from the platform straight into the village (it will be obvious - going in the other direction leads you into a swamp) and I'll be there, right by the public toilets (you may judge the appropriateness of this after you've met me). Limr will be there as well. For those coming from NYC, if you want to meet ahead of that you're on your own.

Yeah, the kind of entertainment I provide is difficult to convert to cash. But if you can come up with a way to monetize painfully dry humor and general snarkiness, I'm all ears.  :P

$50! Why in my day we'd make $50 for the entire band and we'd have to carry the bass player's enormous cabinet on our backs for miles through a blizzard, up hill, both ways.... </end tired joke>

As the day approaches, one thing that occurred might be worth mentioning for you city people: bring bug spray. Things might not be too bad in town, at least during daylight hours, but if we are indeed going to hike up into the woods, you may be eaten alive without some sort of repellent. Good for warding off any deer ticks we might encounter as well.

arrrrrrrrrrrrr my big fear as a city slicker. I'm going to show up in full HAZMAT gear.

Thanks for the country living warning, I never would have thought of that :D

Now, for logistics: Peter & I are going to meet in GCT. How about at the central info booth at 10:30? I have a late gig the previous night, so I'll really be pushing the envelope to get up at a reasonable hour. If you don't see me there at 10:30, just get yourself onto the train  ;D

Who else can meet us at GCT? Looks like Terry will be getting into Penn Station ... is there a train you can take from there, or will you need to get to GCT for the 10:43 train? If so, you can meet us there too. Anyone else? Shouldn't we have a million NYC FW's? I mean, it is NYC after all :P Maybe not the biggest city in the world, but certainly the best ;)

Trains only go from GCT, so anyone coming up will need to get there by whatever means necessary.

The deer tick threat is not all that severe for where we'll be heading - the trail is fairly wide and we don't need to pass through much undergrowth. Always good to take precautions nonetheless. Personally, I'd be more concerned about the mosquitoes.

I'd say you would be safe from mosquitoes because if I'm there, they'll go straight for me and leave everyone else alone. But I'll be wearing weapons-grade bug spray, so unfortunately, I won't be much protection for you guys ;)

Coincidentally, turns out my gig tomorrow night is in Princeton :) Unfortunately, I can't invite you (it's a wedding) and I can't even spend the night in Princeton and come up with you because I'll have all my music gear on me (and I'll be dressed in a suit), so I'd need to come back home to get all my camera gear. If I'm extra-sleepy on Sunday you'll know why ;)

No idea. The bandleader drives me there, I play my horn for like 5 hours straight, he drops me off somewhere in Manhattan, I take the train home. Twelve hour day, about $300, never sure it's really worth it :D

Much film was wasted, many good times were had, and at least one waiter was thoroughly confused.

Andrej, Leonore, and Terry are beautiful people and I love them all, and the oxygen pilot in particular is a great tour guide/event planner. Peter is just cold. Physically, that is, not emotionally.

Pictures will indeed follow (you mean I gotta DEVELOP all these rolls now??), as will a series of "shootouts" where we each contribute our own version of the exact same scene (waiting in line to take these shots was the most anxiety-inducing part of the walkabout).

As the thread title implies, we will do this again next year, but that's not to say we can't do another one before then!

It was a lot of fun reading the arrangements being made, but the tension was rising as it got nearer to the date (I was hoping people wouldn't flake out and not make it), but props all round the NYC-area FW'ers for sticking to their guns and meeting up as planned  :) :) It seems a good time was had & I'm excited to hear more and see some results.

I developed the roll of Tri-X I shot yesterday, so once I get it scanned I'll be able to post some pics. Should have something up by tonight. No doubt.

An exhilarating day!  Many thanks to Andrej and Leonore for patiently shepherding us around.  Cold Spring is a very cool place (esp. after sundown) and merits return visits.  Due to hitting the sack in a thoroughly wiped out state late last night (this morning) I only just souped roll #1.  It may be a day or two before postable images emerge.

Best Sunday in years!

No doubt.

I have to add my praises for Sunday. It went so smoothly and it was fantastic to meet Peter, Satish, and Terry. These guys are Awe.Some. I don't know about anyone else, but I had no concept of how much time was passing - it shocked me when I realized how late it was getting when we headed back down the hill!

I shot all color so those rolls will be souped by my film guys, but I should be able to get some posted tomorrow night.

No doubt.

I got my Tri-X scanned, so here a a few shots to start things off, all with my Olympus 35 SP. I'm sure everyone will be adding theirs as film gets developed.

Ok, I can see already that I gotta get my shots in early or I'll be way too embarrassed to post anything  :-[ Great first shots, Andrej! :) Mine are also going to take a while because I went through 5 rolls and I'm processing each one a different way  (http://www.xhcfx.com/forum/Smileys/default/dry.gif)

Kodak 400CN - Rodinal 1:100 stand developed
Tri-X - HC110 dilH
Fuji Superia - "hybrid process" (a term I invented for Rodinal into C41)
Kodak Gold 200 - bleach bypass
Kodak Ektachrome 64 (exp 1984) - standard C41 (xpro)

I actually souped both B&W's last night, and ALL THREE colors today  (http://www.xhcfx.com/forum/Smileys/default/facepalmsmiley1ti3.gif)  Now to scan ... see you next week :o

Geez, you're not making it easy on yourself, are you? I'm really interested to see how everyone else shot these locations - they're rather familiar to me, but you get into ruts no matter how hard you try. The shots I posted are some of my attempts to see them differently, but the choices others made are sure to be more interesting still. No doubt.

Ok, souped 'n' scanned the B&W rolls, no doubt. And for the first time in my long and illustrious home development career, my "this will develop anything" recipe of Rodinal 1:100 for an hour didn't work. It seriously overdeveloped the 400CN. But luckily I was able to save a few shots, and they have a super-grainy, grungy look to them. I particularly like this candid shot of Terry

Indofunk, some cool shots. I particularly like the one with the fireplace and the stone archway in the background.

Indofunk: I like the one of Terry, the chain link fence and the shoreline snap.

It definitely looks like you covered a variety of terrain :-)

Nice to see the photos that have been posted thus far. The cross-processed stuff is pretty interesting.

I'm scanning my roll of color now. I should have something cleaned up and ready to post by sometime tomorrow.

I almost forgot to post this, amid all the film developing and scanning.

I figured you might be interested in seeing what some of the now-derelict buildings looked like in their heyday. There are some rare period photos here: http://www.hudsonvalleyruins.org/yasinsac/cornish/cornishold.html (http://www.hudsonvalleyruins.org/yasinsac/cornish/cornishold.html) . Following the links on that page will also bring up some modern photos taken in winter, so you can see what it looks like covered in snow and ice rather than poison ivy and bugs.

Great link Andrej, the place looks very different from the way I had imagined it.  Amazing too how much the vegetation has reclaimed, especially the barn.

Here's the first couple of color photos (Canon L1, Canon 50/1.5, Kodak Gold 200). In spite of the heavy green cast in the forest shots, I actually dialed the green saturation down in some of these. I was just THAT green out there.

And I haven't posted the really green ones yet....

The Canon 50/1.5 is very, very good at producing that dreamy look, especially wide open - sharp in the center transitioning to that great Sonnar softness with just a little vignetting,  It's also partially responsible for the high saturation. I do love this lens.

Ok, added the last batch of color. This one is really weird. It was some expired Kodak Gold, 200ASA that I shot at 400 and then bleach bypassed. But the whole roll came out REALLY BLUE. I figure the developer must be spent (I'm gonna put one last roll through it tonight standard C41 and if it turns out all fucked up I'll know that was it)

Anyways, I considered color correcting it, but then I realized it looks pretty damn cool. And a stark contrast to 02Pilot's GREEN. Here's my fave:

Just looking at the photos in this thread is making me realize that a lot of detail is lost in the size reduction - much of the delicacy of the log picture is lost, and there is much more shadow detail in the ruins photo than you can easily see in the small version. Since I don't want to post larger versions here (nobody likes having to scroll horizontally), once I get all of mine sorted out I'll put them in a gallery on Filmosaur (link below) where they can be easily viewed in a somewhat larger form.

Incidentally Indofunk, I can't see your photos linked here. I can see them in your Facebook gallery, but I suspect my array of tracking blockers and other security doohickeys is stopping the Facebook-linked pics. Any chance of posting them on another hosting service?

Love the AAARFFFFF, love the mini-waterfall, but I'd like to see the other entries for the gap in the trees, because neither of ours really captured what I was feeling at the time, which was something like "I've been surrounded by trees and insane green for the past 3 hours and all of a sudden look! here's a break in the trees!" :)

Would've needed a wider lens for that. Too bad I didn't have my Pentax SFX with fisheye lens.

Yeah, I should've tried throwing on that wide angle attachment I told you about. Converts the 40mm Canonet lens to something wider than a 35. Maybe 28ish?

Also, I should try holding the camera steady  ;D

Thanks.  I'm pleased with how they turned out.  BTW, I didn't adjust the saturation at all -- when I tried to up it just to see what would happen I went temporarily blind and my computer shut down.

I was telling Satish, going back to something Lenore and I were talking about -- the way TLR reverse viewfinder images are disorienting, the last shot was pretty lucky because I was spending a good bit of time just trying to compose that thing.  A TLR with a rectangular rather than square image, inviting you to try to shoot landscape, is the work of the devil.  Just as I got by body contorted, my neck twisted, and my eyes screwed up just right so that I had sort of an even horizon and more or less the frame I wanted, the train rolled by.  Click.

No matter how much I use my TLRs I always end up starting to adjust the wrong way before the Bud Abbott in my head smacks me and says "it's in reverse, you idiot" and I go back the other way.

It's just amazing how subdued the green is in those Portra NC shots compared with what I got on the Gold 200 (though it's worth noting that the lens I was using tends to render color fairly vividly as well). My straight scans were alarmingly green, but then I looked out the window and realized that it wasn't that far from reality. I still dialed it back a bit where it seemed absurdly garish.

Yeah, the NC leans toward the blues and magenta.  Also, this stuff is five years out of date, so that probably has some effect.

My last roll (Acros) is drying.  Going to post some more b&w soon.

Before Terry's Acros shots, I'm going to sneak in some more color ones.

I shot all color that day, which is a little unlike me. My color shots tend not to be as good as my b&w ones for whatever reason, but I was really pleased with how these rolls turned out. I think I was picking up on all the ambient talent around me :)

And talk about crazy color, it was already so green in those woods, and then the light got crazy good as we reached the edge of town again.
These are Gold 200, straight from the scanner with no edits other than some very slight cropping and dust removal:

(Just realized I forgot to clean the dust off this shot. That'll have to wait until after laundry! :) And the camera seems to leave scratches on the film.)

That's a great train blur Terry! How close were you?

re: Wein cells ... I've always found that they slowly fade out, and meter slower and slower until you're shooting wide open in broad daylight and you finally realize the meter's dead :)

I cheated--cropped out some of the foreground.

Re the Wein cell--maybe the light faded!  Underexposure would be caused by the meter reading too high, right?

Yeah ... the light was changing real fast with the sun ducking in and out of clouds, so I wonder if you metered with the sun nice and bright, locked it in, and by the time you actually shot the picture the sun had disappeared.

What gallery plugin do you use on wordpress?

And while I'm asking questions, what did you say the differences were between your Canon L1 and the Canon P's?

I'm just using one of the gallery options offered by default, not a plug-in. I'm not really too sure if that's linked to the style template I use or if it's just a generic option.

As far as the differences between the L1 and the P, I'll steal from my own blog post:

The L1 is a V-series Canon RF body derivative, placing it one generation before the P. There are a few differences in detail, but the bodies are dimensionally similar and the controls are laid out essentially the same way on both. Instead of the P’s fixed viewfinder with multiple framelines, the L1 has an adjustable viewfinder with settings for 35 and 50mm lenses as well as a magnified setting designed for precise focusing. Where the P has a single shutter speed dial, the L1 has the older arrangement of two dials, one for high speeds on top and one for low speeds on the front. The shutter speed dial on the L1 also rotates, whereas the one on the P does not. The frame counter on the L1 counts down and requires manual resetting, while the P’s resets itself when the back is opened and counts up. The P has steel shutter curtains while the L1′s are cloth. That’s about it for the differences – they are fundamentally very similar cameras.

It's not my default gallery, but I just realized that I'm self-hosted and you're on Wordpress.com, so maybe they have a different default gallery. Can you try to find the exact name of the gallery, and I'll search for what the wp.com default is? I like it a whole lot better than my own default gallery and the gallery that I installed.

I'm sorta kinda in the market for another rangefinder, and I loved the 5 seconds I spent with your L1 :) But it seems P's are more common, at least on the 'bay, and there are some L1 features I like (adjustable for 35 & 50, and the zoom preview), but also some P features I like (exposure countup, one shutter speed dial, steel shutter curtains), so I'm not sure. The zoom focus preview is pretty amazing though...

I just looked at my Wordpress admin screen. Basically, all I do is go into a page, hit "Add Media" and there's an option to "Create Gallery" on the left side. Once you choose what to include, there are a few options on the right side panel. I haven't the foggiest idea how to determine the name of the actual gallery code.

For the camera, I think I can be a bit more useful. The P is a great choice - it's has everything you need in a modern-feeling package. The 1:1 viewfinder is really underrated for street shooting - since you can keep both eyes open without distortion, you have much better situational awareness. The earlier models have some neat additional features, but they're marginally older and certainly less common and more expensive. I would have been perfectly happy to get another P as a backup LTM body, but the L1 came along and the price was decent, so I grabbed it. It would be hard to choose between them, but the P would probably win out. If you're looking for the features of the older models, check out the VT and VI-T - these have trigger winders, and if you can live with that they tend to be cheaper than the lever wind variants. Another option to consider is a 7 - the body is a little different, but it has all the modernizations of the P plus switchable framelines for 35/50/100/135 and a selenium meter. It's also quite common and tends to be cheaper even than the P.

Hey, lookie what I found! I sent my two SRT's in to get repaired, and when I got them back I popped them open, and the 101 had a partially-exposed roll of TMax100 in it! So I quickly closed it up and shot the rest of the roll and developed it in Rodinal 1:100 because I had no idea what was on it. Here's what came out!
