I'm sure it's been announced here and there... but does everyone know that Polaroid discontinued Type 85 (for the Holgaroid) and Type 665? If you don't know and it's your film (drug) of choice, you better stock up. I'm devastated... I use Type 85 for the majority of my work. :(

Zoe--this is so weird.

I ran into you at Freestyle last week- I had no idea it was you until now.
You were buying a huge stack of polaroid film and we talked about how glorious film was.

Small damn world.

Yeah I think our skorji's polaroids are pretty much up there with the best of them.    love them as a series as well.  one of the hadest thing i find with photgraphy is taking photos in a theme, im sure i can come up with  the odd corker here and there  -but to develop a coherent, thematic portfolio i would stumble and fall long before id got my lens cap off but Skorji excels at this. (not wanting to be overly  :-* :-* :-* , but he does!

and for one so young!  as per his photo in a book i saw recently, im sure he is only 14

Holgaroid is a blast, I don't know where you get them in the UK. Although since the Type 85 film has been discontinued for it, you won't have any negatives to work with, only positives. A real bummer for me. All the other Type 80 series films are being produced for the Holgaroid except for the only Pos/neg film for it.

I'm gutted about the news of Polaroid discontinuing all of the pos/neg film mainly because I have a fridge full of expired 55 and no camera to use it with. Am thinking of making a 5x4 pinhole just to use it up before it really, really expires. The plan was to get my shit together with this (slightly) cheaper film bought on oBay and then start using 55 and 665 seriously once I'd worked out what was good and what wasn't. Now it looks like that window is closing very quickly. Bummed  >:(

It was a project I was saving for a rainy day/week/month.

Polaroid rocks and Skorj's polaroids rock big time, as does his modified polaroid camera which I am still fetishing!
I've heard that 84, 88 and 89 type pack film will be replaced by Polaroids "Viva" also...hmmmm, but have been assured that the rest of the 600 series pack-films as well as the 4 x 5  format film will be produced for a while (whatever "a while" means) I suppose time will tell...
The only pos--neg film I had for my polaroid was so out of date that it didn't even come out of the cassette at all when I pulled the tab...so I guess I may never experience that sort of particular film...so scans of my usual polaroid prints will be producing the only kind of polaroid "negative" I know - the digital kind!
Sparx, you can order polaroid backs for the holga from www.unsaleable.com in Vienna but I'm not sure how that compares costwise with options like freestyle...

That really blows, considering I just acquired my first polaroid at a flea mkt this weekend (a 360 with lots of goodies). I went looking at polaroid when I got home to see what film to get and never saw the discontinuing notice.

Nnn, don't give up...try your photo lab you use, if you do use one, and ask them to call around their other stores they have here and there to see if one of them has it on stock, etc. I did just that with mine with the time zero film, 669, 667, 500 and others, that were scattered around they found for me. They have 40 packs of tz waiting for me when I'm ready to buy and just brought home 10. I prefer the 667, but shot a round of 669...erm, can't seem to throw one out properly...out of focus, etc. and maybe try a lift from one or two...I dunno. See what you are able to do...that sucks though.

Hi Ed...

They are NOT discontinuing Type 55. 665 & 85 are getting the hatchet. I've been in contact with Barbara Hitchcock there... begging... pleading... we shall see what response I get from the "business developers." Probably nothing but an "i'm sorry," but it doesn't hurt to try anyway.

I hear that they are shipping until the end of April... so if a store near you runs out of film, wait for the first of the month and try again. Freestyle ran out due to me an another photographer buying it all up, then they got another shipment... so hold out on those $900.00 cases for now. I have a frig stocked now, so I'm feeling a little better. I got 100 packs. 1,000 images ... maybe i should make a book of my last 1,000 images... hmm... seems too apocolyptic. ha!

Whoa Beck, that is one of the freakiest (and one of the coolest) manips I have seen in a long time. Gary, you probably already know how much I like your manipulations (at least you will if you read my comments on your uploads at polanoid).

If anyone is interested in doing manipulations and are not sure exactly where to start it really is time you became a member at polanoid.net and downloaded my talented friend Filippo Centenari's e-book on the topic, it really is quite inspiring! I'm addicted to this time zero now dammit...and here I was dissing it bad not long ago. I'm sorry, P. I look at folks' manips and most look like smoov butter...mine looks like I have cement in my hand when manipulating it...I push so hard...ahem. I try not to though and warm it up by moving it around first...this is not sounding right at all....okay, so back to nips...hahaaa.....I have to put my photo on a semi hard surface and try it that way...oh dear god I have to stop here.

Here's my best...I think so at least. Gary, I dig those...you know this.

let's just say you accidentally overdid it and ended up with a bunch of 665.  not that I did, mind you.  just hypothetically.  how might you store it best for long term?  hypothetically.

Fridge. Just do not freeze I think. That sounds like a nice hypothetical situation to be in. Hypothetically would you need a mini-bar fridge, or a hunter's bear fridge? Skj.
Title: Re: Is it safe to say......Polaroid
Post by: Theresa on March 15, 2006, 02:18:54 PM
wondered if it could be frozen.

not that I'd know, but I'd guess it would be a couple of the minibar type.  hypothetically.
Title: Re: Is it safe to say......Polaroid
Post by: artpunk on March 16, 2006, 05:24:16 AM
Don't freeze it, I'm pretty sure that's a definite no-no, but fridge should be fine. A hypothetical bar-fridge is a very good idea. Hypothetically speaking if caught in a hypothetical jam one could always offer some hypothetically overstocked hypothetical 665 film to certain hypothetical members of a hypothetical forum, perhaps even in a specific hypothetical thread who would (hypothetically) be more than happy to offer hypothetical (or even actual) money for any hypothetical film that one might not be able to use in a given hypothetical time...hypothetically speaking of course...

Plrb... :)

I have a question concerning the recent stuff I've been doing with my postive and negative Polaroid shots...and if anyone could possbily give me some advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Most of you have seen my work lately, well, some, and while it's not the greatest thing in the world, it is different and kind of exciting to me turning these Polaroid shots around and scanning them. Looking at them in person, you won't see much, or anything, besides that milky white powder...and when you scan these, they take on a whole new light...one that I find interesting.

But, the only thing is, is trying to figure out a way to have these put on paper...prints...as I don't have any sort of great printer...none, in fact. Nor do I have a burner on my hard drive. However, I was told about these small gadgets, a jump drive, and purchasing one and possbily uploading scanned images from those shots and perhaps taking them somewhere where they can scan them professionally...hi resolution and all. Say, at 7x7? I'm not sure really.

So what do you think? Do you think they would fair nicely if I were to have them printed? Or something? Or would they have this cheese factor...I don't know really.

Post by: Theresa on March 17, 2006, 08:56:12 PM
I think they're quite wonderful looking.  there's no reason in the world you couldn't take these to have them professionally scanned just like you scanned them.  just tell them what you did.  email them jpgs to show they looked when you did it and they should be able to match it.

or

does your file have enough resolution to print digitally (300dpi at the size you want it printed)?  because you can email or do ftp uploads to many digital printing services.

I like to print much of my md format work 28x28in on canvas.  unframed.  I think these would look killer like that.
Title: Re: Is it safe to say......Polaroid
Post by: beck on March 17, 2006, 09:11:53 PM
Thanks. Hmm, yea, those could be possibilities...but I think I may go and look for one of these...I just have to ask which one would suit me best and the amount of storage capacity I would need, as there are hundreds of them and MB's. I can just simply pop it in, transfer my files and take it somewhere...or to someone. But I'm not certain what size of a file for each individual scan I should do...I may have to ask then.

I'd still like to hear other options, if anyone has a few...thanks, Theresa.

Beck,

just take the images you wish to have reprinted on paper to a company who does high end digital printing. Have it scanned at the highest resolution available.  They can print it out on a variety of papers and at a variety of sizes.  have them run an artist proof for you so you an check the color, etc.

I have time zero manuipulations done all the time this way, as i don't want to sell the orginal and it is nice to have a larger version.  My standard size is 6x6, but i have  had one enlarged to 3 1/2 foot square for someone for their office. It was printed out on canvas and treaded with a UV spray.  I had my doubts that it would be any good at that size, but i was very wrong. Turned out beautifully.

If you live too remote from any decent lab (as I do), there is the option of a place like mpix.com.  (The site is cheesy but you might find something appealing in the products) They are a division of a professional service (need a tax ID for the other place, I think), but gives some digital printing options.  You size it yourself (make sure the final resolution is 300dpi or whatever they need) and then pick the type of paper and printing you want- even canvas.  You would ftp them the file and provide some money, and they send you the stuff in a couple of days.  I did this a couple of times a while ago before I had a printer.

I have some (maybe 3 boxes = 30 polas) of manipulable Time Zero film, but am almost afraid to use it! Instead I've been "mucking around" with my 600 intergral film to try and reproduce some of Rene Magritte's works in Polaroid form.

Thanks, Cameron...and darn it, use that film and soon. You know, I dig how did this Polaroid and I can't figure out the flower part though, but it's a fantastic nonetheless and I'll need to do a search on that particualr image. I think that's a grand idea and even once thought of doing Frida Kahlo's, Girl with Death Mask, with one of the toys...I'll buy the exact kind of dress the girl is wearing and make the two masks pictured in her painting...and find a prime location. We shall see. I'd like to see more of these works you've got.

Thanks Beck. The flower image is a reference to one of Magritte's "The Son of Man" painting variations. "The Son of Man" had Magritte's famous bowler-hatted man facing the viewer, but his face is almost completely obscured by an apple. I have seen a version where instead of an apple there is a beautiful large rose, but for the life of me I can't find it anywhere on a web search at the moment! The closest example I could find was his painting "La grande guerre" 1964. Here's a link to some of my other "Hommage to Magritte" polas if you're interested - http://www.polanoid.net/jump/?to=pictures&uid=12&prid=766&pid=17114

Here is a really nice sx-70 manipulation guide http://www.polanoid.net/tools/download?f=e-book-001-sx70manip.pdf

Gary, is there some other way of looking at that file? I cannot for the life of me, open any sort of pdf files on my computer. Even the Krappy Kontest, I could not see.

I was always told to wait a minute or so after taking a Polaroid, is when you can start manipulating...well, it's true in most cases...but I found out even waiting one or even two hours, the emulsion sets softly and nicely and easy to work with....I've let some sit for a day or two and found that you can still manipulate them...sometimes with a little bit of heat from a blow dryer. I swear I'm hooked on doing those and found myself not shooting with any of my toys in quite some time...I think I need a swift kick in the rear end.

Cameron, I'll have to take a look at that linkage...thanks.

Speaking of Polaroid 665, if any of you are in the Chicago area, Calumet Photo on Goose Island had eight boxes left on the shelves. Maybe more in the warehouse. All of them had stickers indicating that the film was being discontinued. Grab it while you can! You can also order it from their website:
