Title: Film: the reason some of the past was in HD

A helpful explainer, and something I need to explain to the digerati regularly...
Even worse, if you shoot peel-apart.

Dang, Whamageddon!

I think there's been at least one classic Dr. Who series released on blu-ray from 16mm film which makes it look distinctly better than anything which survived on tape from the Great Erasing.
The one I remember hearing about was The Daemons (Chap with wings, five rounds rapid), not sure if there were any more.

The reason science fiction TV show "Babylon 5" has never had a blu-ray release is because while the space sequences were ahead of their time for the day, they've aged so badly they'd look like Playstation 1 graphics and would need completely recreating from scratch to stand up in high definition.

Whereas effects from Kubrick's 2001 still look marvellous.

Yes, though never look at the backdrops behind the apes with a critical eye.
Not even once.
