: Collective noun for a group of cameras? (Apart from collection.)
: zapsnaps March 25, 2016, 09:30:18 AM
I have a group of cameras, which is occasionally added to, (very) occasionally thinned out. A 'collection' makes it sound static and perhaps unused. It also has scholarly connotations, with which I am uncomfortable.

I buy what pleases, usually on looks or an amusing name (I have a Beirette and want to buy a Wirgin and a FOCA). Things are bought for fun & used, rather than to chuck in a glass display case for others to pay deference to. So, does anybody have a better collective noun for their family or group of cameras than a collection?

Or in a reference to an old primary school chat-up line, what do you call yours?

I prefer "pile".

'Pile' is good. I may have a pile of them on my desk at the minute, actually.

Mine is more a horde...

I would go for 'a flight' or 'gang'. On second thoughts 'flight' suggests something light and moveable. 'gang' is more suitable for sl66se/RZ67/SWC.

My wife calls it a mess.

I think of mine as a tribe... all slightly different, but working toward one purpose. Someday, I might have a horde (hoard?), but not yet.

A "capture" - or does that have too many d*g*tal connotations?

Sticking to my pseudo-scientific method of determining things by scanning the results of a google search of collective nouns for at least a minute and a half, I have decided upon the term cluster.

It's a bag of cameras.

BAG, noun that cannot be rendered as plural, EVER.
: Re: Collective noun for a group of cameras? (Apart from collection.)

This thread is just bags of fun.

I think of mine as a fleet...

My wife wouldn't agree that you can't have a plural of bag. She's got a plural of bag many times over... in fact she's got a shedload of them.

Ah, there you go, a shedload of cameras.

Favorites so far:

jharr's "tribe"
Adam's "cluster" (although that leads too easily into "clusterf***" which may be either more or less accurate, actually)
Terry's "fleet"

As for me, I have always like the oddball descriptors of collective nouns. How about "a murder of cameras"? An exaltation? A gaggle? Hmmm, I think I'm leaning towards gaggle.

That would be if we were discussing audio equipment, maybe.   ;)

Would then a collection of instant cameras be a pod?

That's funny to think of different kinds of cameras having different collective nouns. I suppose a collection of instamatics would be a 'cartridge'. Maybe a 'bifurcation' of TLRs?

The lamest term I have ever heard (semi)seriously used for a 'collection of something' was back when SLVR and I were longboarders and dudes would talk about what is in your 'quiver' (think Robinhood's group of men).

I am leaning towards either 'pile' or the wife-approved 'mess' suggestions!

I wouldn't say she approves of it, more like tolerates.

Alternatively - and sailing very close to the wind in terms of nonsensical collective nouns - how about "A Work In Progress" of cameras? Or "A Not Done Yet" of cameras? Possibly "A Burgeoning" of cameras? A "Just Getting Started" of cameras? "A Hobby" of cameras?

I quite like Burgeoning.

I've just been trawling through my memory for a term I heard used by a teacher many years ago and which, when I questioned what it meant, I was told "enough".

The term?  An Elegant Sufficiency.
