Remember over on the Beerol thread where I mused about making developer out of some other substance that contains caffeic acid? No?? Well, I did, and I did.

Read about it here.

Here's a teaser on Dacomatic copy film.

Those came out great James, what should we try next :).  No eucalyptus up here, I wonder if Cedar or Douglas Fir bark would work?  How did the negatives look, do you think the development time you used was appropriate?

The negs are a little over developed. Next time I will quantize the amount of bark I use and do some time tests. For an initial first pass at eucalyptol, I think I made some good guesses and got decent images.

Hi James, great job. I remember a guy who made a developer he called "Barkanol". He once destroyed the old caffenol group at flickr, so you have to google yourself.

After reading the wikipedia article about caffeic acid I wanna try peppermint tea.

Brilliant!

What will be the next -ol? Menthol maybe? ;)
: Re: Eucalyptol
: Terry August 19, 2015, 01:36:27 PM
That would be linguistically problematic: "mentholol" and hard to say.  I've noticed the new drink that all the trendies around here are into is called "Bai5" and advertises itself as an anitoxidant.  What I particularly noticed is that it contains enough caffeine to take the top off your skull, so of course I wondered if you could develop film with it...

I wonder if anyone has ever tried tobacconol? If it works, it could prove to be the most addictive film developer out there!
Besides, it would also be what is probably the only good thing to come out of that industry... Then again, probably not since they now talk about tertiary smoke...

Might be a good way to get sepia-toned prints too.

Tell you what, there's a prize of a bottle of Glenfiddich for the first person to produce workable "choconol" as that would be the one thing to get my missus processing my negs  :o 8)
: Re: Eucalyptol

Choconol sounds expensive, and possibly more addictive than tobacconol. Actually I have considered trying to tone cyanotypes with tobacco tea. I sometimes smoke a pipe, so I have a bit of tobacco sitting around. I don't think I'm curious enough to use good tobacco when eucalyptus bark is free, but someone who isn't surrounded by these trees might give it a go. But if you have some fine quality tobacco, I will trade eucalyptus bark for it. :P

Kidding aside, if anyone is keen on trying eucalyptol, let me know and I can post some bark to your location.

I bought some Lemon Balm seeds because I read that this plant contains pretty high levels of caffeic acid. Since neither Lemonol, nor Balmol sound right, I will ask the Filmwasters to come up with a suitable name if it turns out to work well.

Citrol?

Better watch out, James - stripping eucalyptus bark could get the tree-huggers and Koala lobby agitated  :o

The beauty of this variety of eucalyptus is that is sheds a layer of bark every summer. The bark is between 1 and 5mm thick with a few chunkier pieces that won't grind up at all. So I just picked it all up off of the ground. These trees do have an oily resin also, so I avoided any pieces with the black goop on them.

Besides, the koala lobby is so corrupt now. They have spent decades getting by on the "cute factor", but now they are just as bad as tobacco and big oil, sitting in their smoke-filled back rooms scheming about ways to get Washington to bend to their will. Well I say No More! They can go back to their poison snake infested penal colony for all I care!!

Has anyone tried developing with simply Vit-C and washing soda? Even if you have to leave it in there for a few days for VitC to work slowly...

I'll call it "Nothingol" :)
: Re: Eucalyptol

or just "ol".
: Re: Eucalyptol

You could just buy Caffeic acid but it seems to be quite expensive.  Looking at Wikipedia I now understand why the Beerol works, Barley grain has caffeic acid.

According to Wiki, ALL plants have caffeic acid because it's a necessary precursor to make lignin. Of course, the concentration of caffeic acid in tissues will vary widely, but again according to Wiki, it's only present in "modest" quantities in coffee, so if that can be used as a developer, there's no wonder why a lot of other plant material can be used...

Yes, Vit-C solo with soda is a weak developer comparable with Caffenol solo, but I have the impression it fogs the negs very much. It's incredible how much both profit from each other if they are combined.

To verify if any plant material really develops film you have to try it without Vit-C/Ascorbate but of course with soda at a pH of let`s say 10 at least. I tried once a friends proposal with an instant coffee-surrogate (german slang: Muckefuck) named Caro-Kaffee and Vit-C and got significant development. Then I dropped the Vit-C and got totally blank negs.

That's right... I'm flower fouling my own thread! The twist is that the film was developed with eucalyptol. :D

Ok, I'm totally stealing that word to describe any coffee that is not fully caffeinated and derived from whole roasted coffee beans that were ground before my eyes :D

"Folgers?? THAT muck-fuck???" ;D

Mentho-lol seems quite fitting in this day and age :)
