I need to get a pair of bolt cutters.
The bolt cutter item seemed the most practical to me as well, though I tend to prefer a battery-powered Sawzall or a 12-gauge.

The good thing about bolt cutters is that they're silent and don't run out of juice...
But if it's just for opening a padlock, it's easier to first try using shims. And if you don't have a bolt cutter, using canned air and a hammer also works...
As for the advice, he's probably right on most fronts though we can't say it officially because it's not politically correct.

The only one I take exception to is #8. I'm applying this to music, and I have hundreds of pieces that I've started to write and given up on halfway because I wasn't feeling it. The "excuse" for not finishing is twofold: 1. If my heart isn't into it, then the finished product will reflect that, and 2. it gives me more time to write my real masterpiece! :D
I'm suspecting something similar applies to cinema too.

Also, please teach me the canned air and hammer technique. I predict Queens is going to experience a rash of industrial site breakins soon ;)
"And the odd thing is that nothing was stolen! Although there were a large number of empty boxes of Tri-X in nearby trash cans..."

I think that one is rather particular to cinema.  Making a movie is such a tremendous investment in every way that you better finish it, one way or another.

Quite simple. Have you ever read the instructions on those cans? Have you ever wondered why it says to never invert the can?
Well, I have and Google being my friend, I was amazed by the results. It turns out that using the can inverted lets the chemicals flow out of the can in liquid form. Being decompressed rapidly, those liquified gases drop in temperature to -40° instantly. So, if you spray the stuff inside a padlock it will make all the internals somewhat brittle. All that's left to do is hammer it open.
But if you want a gentler way, just google "padlock shims". This won't break the locks but also doesn't work on good quality locks like those made by Master.

I need to get a pair of bolt cutters.
I like to call them "The Key to the City".  I couldn't tell you how many locks I've clipped for work.

I remember a joke from a guy who taught Mike Rowe how to dismantle a dead monitor:
Q.: How do you call a crow bar?
A.: Mexican Vise-Grips...
