Just saw that. Except for the design of the subway (and the presence of the weight machine), I feel like they could have been taken yesterday. What film was it taken on? The colors have held up extremely well.

My guess would be Kodachrome.

Yeah, that's what I thought too.

Strangely looking at these reminds me a bit of how the Metro was when I was a kid. Now passengers with their nose stuck to their cellphones or with earplugs on listening to their music.

Is it just me who just loves the noises the cars make?

I never wear earphones or listen to music when I'm on the go, partly because I want to be aware of my surroundings, and partly because I like the sounds of the streets/subways (well, except the screeeeeching brakes  :-\ )

Do you know how many times I've been waiting in the subway thinking "You know, I really need to know my weight and horoscope - if only there was a way to do it here and now..."? Stupid modernity....

Well, to combat that, at least there are tarot card readers every 10 feet ... but those are aboveground, so when you're in the subway you still have to sweat it out.

I wonder if the horoscopes were like "you will NOT get hit by a train today!" or "your train will come on time today!" or "prepare for a long wait between Bedford Ave and 1st Ave!"

Thanks for posting the link. I'm a fan of Danny Lyon's work. I remember those gum machines. You'd get a little 2 piece box of chiclets for a penny.

It's funny because we never had that many vending machines in the metro. There was a photo booth at the central hub and plenty of transfer printing machines on the docks. The transfer machines were sadly all removed when they were abolished... That's when the company went with all RFID cards. You can't even get in the bus anymore even if you have plenty of cash with you   :(

I love the subway, both London and New York, these have prompted me to take my camera travelling over the holidays! (http://www.emoticons.free.fr/smileys/Pack-Xmas/xmas_smile.gif)

Well that triggered it, I've finally gone and ordered a copy of his book The Bikeriders. Merry Xmas me!

Ha! Bedford on the L was a different world back then. Hell, it was a different world back in the 90s. Nary the whiff of trustafarian hipsters.

Personally, I don't care if hipsters take the train... as long as they make a good picture :)

Strangely, I'm suddenly contemplating getting a metro card...
