I'm pretty interested in some well-designed mechanism of miniature slide projectors. Eventually I found that LED with heatsink is a perfect solution to this niche category. I'd already done a few mods as below and would use this topic to share my modding picture and suggestion. :-)
Zett 150 (Germany)
Sputnik 2 (Спутник 2) (Russia)
Etude 2c (Этюд-2с) (Russia)
Colour Projector (Japan)
Leitz Prado 250 (Germany)
Elmo E-80 Projector (Japan)

This is interesting James. What prompted these mods?

Heat, efficiency and color temperature!
Most miniature projectors during 60's~70's use incandescent bulbs. It's really HOT especially on the ones without cooling fan. Though traditional bulb render colors better, modern LEDs indeed deliver nice white color and much lower working temperature. Moreover, the heat and light from LEDs are both directional and easier to deal with.

I've considered a similar mod with some of my 8mm projectors, maybe when I can't find bulbs for them I will be more motivated. I've seen others doing mods to replace incandescent bulbs with halogen on movie projectors with great success. There are some very bright LED lights out there now and the price continues to drop. I love those little projectors. So far, due to space constraints, I've limited my projector collection to 8mm and View Master but I may be able to find room for a miniature.

[ZETT 150]
My favorite miniature projector - the clamshell mechanism is so well-engineered!

[Sputnik 2] (Спутник 2)
Its name really tells its era. 8)

[Leitz Prado 250]
My latest modded projector. Actually it's not so miniature but it's really a classic beauty. Yet this Prado 250 is the most powerful mod I made by over-driving one SST-90 to 13A (default is 9A).
