That's a fine looking tractor Dave. I do like the alignment of the exhaust, very pleasing!

Kevin and Jeff, as a Geologist I'm always a sucker for rock formations, great job.
I had my Kodak Brownie Hawkeye loaded for toy camera day but wasn't able to participate. I finally finished the roll over the weekend. These were shot on Kodak TMax 100 and Semi-Stand developed in Rodinal 1-100 for 1 hour.

Love Dave's tractor and Peter's pinhole of the coast. Nice stuff all around.
Mine is another from the same city excursion that produced last week's color shot. This one is with my Canon L1, Serenar 50/1.9, HP5+ in Caffenol C-H(RS).

Dave, that is a very nice image of a tractor and 02pilot's street scene, which feels like it's from the 20's or 30's, nicely done.

Terry, that first image is gorgeous!
-
These are the most recent I've taken. The first from a Holga, the second with a Mamiya C220 and Lomo Film (the majority of which was crap due to the numbers and symbols from the backing paper appearing on the negative). Most importantly for me I managed to develop them myself and really enjoyed it. The last one is from a Leica Z2x and is from the first roll of colour film I have ever developed :)
-
Thanks Collin--the Ektar really likes red!

Some really decent shots here!

I love my yashica mat 124g... sigh... but it's in need of repair again. Every 3 or so years it seems. I used it way too much over the past 10 years, it was my go to camera. The meter broke a while back with dents, the crank misc parts of body has brass coloured patina, parts of the face is dented, advance is no longer as smooth because gearing is worn, the counter window is missing. I think I will let it stay broken this time. :'(

Is that the new Imperial War Museum? last time I checked they had a refurb...
Hi Peter.
Yes, it reopened earlier this year after an extensive (and expensive) refurb. All the exhibits are arranged in galleries around a vast central atrium (as shown in my posted pic). All very... erm... "modern". Not sure if I'm a fan..! It's nothing like I remembered from when my old dad used to drag me around there "when I were a lad".
The Lord Ashcroft Gallery is good, showing one of the worlds largest collections of Victoria Crosses and George Crosses, and telling the stories of those to whom they were awarded, (best movie ever - Zulu - showing on a loop in one corner), but no photography allowed in this area...
There was an exhibition of work by British photographer Mark Neville in one of the smaller galleries when we went, which is apropo to this forum. Taken on large plate cameras with multiple flash set-ups whilst on patrol with troops in Helmand. A totally different view to that we usually see from conflict zones.

Emboldened by a conversation I had with O2Pilot and limr recently, I shot a quick snap of a candy stand in the Times Sq subway stop, from maybe 20 feet away. The owner (who I am only guessing is Bangladeshi, certainly South Asian at any rate) started yelling at me not to take any pictures. So I walked right up to the stand and calmly explained to him that yes, I can indeed take a picture in this public place* and that oh! look! I just did. He was threatening to call the cops, which I found amusing because not only am I pretty sure I was in the right*, but he was probably operating on slightly-shady immigration/work status (again, a bold assumption, although if he was working in a stand in the subway, his papers were most likely in order).
Anyway, it made for an awesome shot :)

*On further reflection, I think the subway might be a grey zone. It *is* a public place, as the MTA is a government organization, but they have all sorts of "rules" for photography in the subway, like no tripods. There may be one about not photographing a candy stand (which may be privately owned) while standing on MTA property. But who knows. I should probably find out at some point, as a lot of my photography takes place in the subway (because most of my LIFE seems to take place in the subway :P )

A cool shot indeed. As far as the whole public/private thing, I'm sure there are countless rules in NYC about specific locations, but barring studying them all (Which seems a bit excessive - I mean, study? Really? At least that seems to be my students' attitude, and they're doing just fi...no, wait, this is a bad example.) my guiding principle is "reasonable expectation of privacy." You're in the subway, in any capacity, you have zero expectation of privacy in my book, which means I'll take whatever photos I like.
Also, Indofunk, I am totally not responsible if somebody takes a swing at you while photographing them. No doubt.
-
Also, wanted to mention that I really like Ezzie's police instant shot, Geoff's beach tractor, and Mab's rocks. Very nice shots all.

I know in the Montreal Metro taking photos is entirely illegal even though there are no indications anywhere that say so. I also know that to fine you, the security agents have to find you. So it's a semi-open game.
-
Thanks for the warning Francois. In future (maybe) I'll be a little more circumspect in the Metro. In truth, the only time my street shooting in Montreal involved any interaction, it led to an hour-long conversation about Vivian Maier with a lovely young woman.
And let me weigh in on my personal favorite this week: Sandeha's first one of the airborne lady. Brilliant portrait!
-
Being circumspect in the metro can have good and bad sides.
The good side is that you can avoid being seen. The bad side is that it came make you look like you're trying to hide something... this can probably get you into more trouble than anything.
I guess the best thing is to act like a tourist, pretend you don't know a single thing but keep an eye out for the security guards in dark blue outfits and stay on the move. So far, I've only heard of a few people who were fined.
I just searched the transit corp's website and I just found this which is probably related to why people were fined
http://www.stm.info/en/info/rules/taking-photographs-and-filming-videos (http://www.stm.info/en/info/rules/taking-photographs-and-filming-videos)
It turns out you're allowed to take photos but need a permit to do so...
-
Another oldie from me. Taken during a hike around Halifax over twenty years ago. Proof that it's not all grim oop North ;)
-
Francois--thanks for doing the research. I guess the "no photos" rule should be filed away with the Dorval airport departure tax. It's all about the money!
On the positive side, I had a look at the "offences and fines" page and was pleased to see that the listing of most common offences did not include photography.
And finally, let me say that I am still enjoying Satish's irate subway vendor. It could serve as a warning against the consumption of candy and sugary drinks.
-

I just checked their entire by-laws and nowhere is it mention that photography is prohibited. It could be that the people who got fines were either endangering other travelers or simply blocking passenger traffic flow in some way. There's always someone who will try and setup a tripod somewhere, that will get too close to the rails to take a picture of the incoming train or simply stay put when everyone is trying to flow around them... then there's climbing on the structures to get a better shot and so on...
-
Well. I'm finally getting caught up on my developing back log. It wasn't too bad - 6 rolls from the past month or so - but I still don't like having to catch up.
The first two rolls I'm scanning were shot down in Manhattan on Hallowe'en night with some fellow Filmwasters. Had a roll of Tri-X and a roll of HP5 that I was planning to push to 1600. I scanned the Tri-X first and by the end, I was convinced that I am a total hack. I think I got 2-3 usable shots and the rest were just garbage. I figured I needed to stick to nice easy things like daylight and flowers :P
I'm now almost done scanning the HP5, and holy shnikes, what a difference! Does HP5 just push that much better than Tri-X, or did I just suck through the whole first roll before I remembered how to take a picture?
Here's one from the roll of Tri-X that didn't really need tweaking. The others from the good roll will be put up in this thread in Photo Essays: http://www.filmwasters.com/forum/index.php?topic=7444.0 (http://www.filmwasters.com/forum/index.php?topic=7444.0)
-
Nice globe shot! I've had very good results pushing Tri-X in Rodinal and even in HC110, but maybe Caffenol treats Tri-X differently (ie, doesn't like pushing it :) ). Let's go on that assumption rather than you magically losing your ability to photograph and then magically regaining it a few minutes later :)

Loving all of those! Night time wet street shots are the best :)

Great weekend thread, all. Tin Tin that shot of the bench is awesome. A classic subject handled in a unique way.

Thanks and Thanks!
I never had a chance to get through and mention who had caught my eye this week. Huecos_rancheros' last color shot, 02Pilot's night scene, mab's Traincar and geoffgeoffp's tractor thing look great.
Indofunk your image is also quite interesting. I've had similar run ins with hot dog vendors and such within my city. They don't really understand what "public" means. As far as I'm concerned if you are in public, fair game. Just beware and don't poke the bear!
I have a story from last week. I saw a shot that could be interesting and as Im setting up the shot a homeless crackhead comes up to me and starts his schpeel to get me to give him money. After being polite, refusing. I said I was waiting for someone expecting him to move on. Turns out the stuff I thought was so interesting was his and he didn't want me taking a shot of it. I tried to explain to him why I thought it was interesting hoping he would see some artistic merit or something and move aside. He responded with a cold hard look of destain. He then replied with "you want to come with me around the corner down the alley there". Sensing imminent mugging or stabbing I told him to have a "good day, man" and walked away as he cracked out and started calling me the repo guy and other things that make no sense whatsoever.

I do choose my battles, so if it were a homeless crackhead's "stuff" that I wanted to photograph and he starts getting into it with me, I'll choose to lose that battle. The candy vendor was safely behind his candy stand ... if he'd come out the door or something I'd probably have given up.

Wise decision to always err on the side of safety. When people are intoxicated they always become unpredictable and what goes on in their head is never logical.
I once was taking pictures minding my own business and a bunch of rednecks started thinking they were in the shot and threatened to kill me. I was really happy to be next to the car! Lets just say I locked myself in faster than you can say.
For me, being a redhead always makes things a bit more risky when it comes to street photography as I somehow attract attention more easily. Lucky for me, my hair tends to darken as I grow older.

You could always wear a silly hat you won't stand out so much :D
