: Your World Toy Camera Day 2014 photos
: Francois October 18, 2014, 10:35:11 PM
I finally started an image thread first!

Here are some of my WTCD 2014 images.
And yes, the camera did scratch the film. And yes, the flash didn't sync properly.
These were taken on my mom's old aunt's Haking Halina-Viceroy.

Great start Francois! I love the light in the first photo.
It will be a while until I can post my shots. Decided to go for color film and am out of C41 chemistry.

Well done Francois. I like the park bench. I am kicking myself. I dug out the gakkenflex and loaded it up and then the day got busy and forgot :-(

That was fast! And an awesome start, too :)

Mine will be a few days. Took the Konstruktor AND the Holga out yesterday but they both had color film so they have to go to the lab.

Thanks!
I decided to work like the old photojournalists did: fast.
Shot my assignment, got home, processed and dried, did a quick and dirty scan... I needed to do this because I had tickets to a show last night and I wanted to be all done before that. I went to see Marco Calliari, he's the former singer of the heavy metal band Anonymus who now sings crazy versions of traditional italian songs and strange translated versions of Quebec popular music... and he was followed by soul singer Kim Richardson... four hours of eardrum shaking goodness and dancing...

right now, the autocorrect tells me at every two words that I didn't get enough sleep last night!

Ah, well. Not much could be salvaged. But after a bit of work this may be passed off as an image.

Box Brownie, Tri-X N+1 (should have been +3 at least)

As I say, something's definitely better than nothing.
I have 5 frames on the film that turned out really underexposed because I didn't correctly check the flash sync on the camera. It was firing in M mode and not X mode :(

OK, here we go. Went to a local historic estate property overlooking the Hudson River and shot a couple rolls. The color will have to wait for processing, but I got the B&W done this afternoon. Kodak Brownie Hawkeye with the lens reversed, Fomapan 200, Caffenol-C-L semi-stand, one-stop push. Not my favorite film if I'm honest, but I've got a few rolls to kill, so why not get on with it.

Shot a roll in the Holga on the day, I was planning to develop it that afternoon but then a bit of the ceiling fell in (leaky pipe in the upstairs flat), so I didn't get the chance. Will probably develop it later in the week (once the ceiling's repaired) or at the weekend now.

It sure was!
Somehow, I'm happy I didn't bring a camera as I wouldn't have experienced the show as much as I have.

Fomapan 200 Not my favorite film
I had the same experience with Fomapan 400 and have discovered that I like it better overexposed and underdeveloped.

Shot with my Reader's Digest Panoramic Camera on Fomapan 200 and home developed. This toy camera is my absolute favourite at the moment anyway so toy camera day gave me the perfect excuse to take some photographs with it.

I normally shoot it at 100. I tried it in Caffenol-C-H(RS), but it was quite grainy and showed lots of tiny black specs (in the emulsion, not foreign objects). I'm doing it semi-stand in C-L now, but the standard recipe produces more base fog than I would like. I pushed this roll and the base fog was even worse. I need to bump up the KBr to see if I can tame it, but by the time I figure it out I'll be done with the batch I bought and will probably just go back to Tri-X or FP4+ or whatever.

OK, got the color from the Holga 135 Pan back and scanned. Same location as my other WTCD photos.

I like those panos inksmelladdict. Leaving the letterboxes on adds something intangible, but gives them a little more visceral impact.

Brownie Hawkeye Flash Model with flipped lens.
Kodak Portra 160

Inksmell: somehow, I always found that those cheap pano cameras are best when used in B&W...

Thanks guys. Jharr, I really like the colours in your first image. Francois, I agree entirely. I've tried shooting colour on the thing and it just doesn't work very well. It's fine and produces serviceable images but shooting in black and white tends to give more drama to the shots.

Okay, I FINALLY got mine scanned in. I still have to edit and throw them up on Flickr, but here's a quick one that made me laugh. We were at a farmers' market and I was petting this turkey and took a picture of it. So weird looking, like its brains are on the outside and getting all melty. As soon as I took the picture, it stretched out its neck at me and gobbled really loud!  ;D

Me! *raises hand* I love me a strange fact  ;D

Well, first of all raise your hand all those who knew that all turkeys were artificially inseminated?
That's right! Originally all turkeys used to be about the same size, both male and female. But farmers decided to do some selective breeding in order to have bigger birds. So now, there's a problems: the big boy turkeys are too big to procreate with the female turkey. The only solution left is artificial insemination. I once saw on TV a guy who had the weirdest job title in the world: he was a turkey mas******or! everybody laughed so he had to explain the whole deal...

Also, flirting turkeys are just plain pretty dumb... and I'd even go to say even worse than flirting guys.
A bunch of zoologist specializing in animal reproductive behavior had built a mock female turkey with a rubber head for a study of mating rituals. Lets just say the fake turkey was pretty appealing to the male. So they decided to place a bet on how much of the turkey decoy the could remove before the male lost interest. Well, lets just say that they all lost their bets! In the end, all they had was a stick planted in the ground with part of a rubber head attached to it... and the male turkey still thought it was pretty sexy.

Also, most people complain that turkey is a dry meat. That's because most people cook it the wrong way around. If you cook it with the belly down, the meat will be more moist. Thing is that these birds have pretty strong leg and chest muscles but very boney backs. When you cook the meat in the juice, it gets better than if let to dry in the oven.

So these are the weird facts I know about the most improbable bird to still roam the earth.

great shots.

Bah! All in all it was a bit of a disaster. The switch on the Holga got knocked off N to B, so everything I shot on the day was massively overexposed and blurry as all get out.

This one is possibly the most interestingly blurry...

I think I'll tape up the switch, or maybe put a dab of superglue to stop it moving, as this isn't the first time this has happened.

I will be late on this one. Just sent the film to a lab this week.
Love O2Pilot's wide shots. Fantastic colors. And the cranes from inksmelladdict.

Thanks, Manuel - those were on Gold 200 (probably expired, previous variant of the emulsion (200-6)), which seems to produce pretty nice color in most cases.
