Title: TinTin went to the Desert.
Post by: SLVR on October 01, 2014, 05:00:54 AM
Welp I have returned Sunday night from my trip. I wish it would have been longer as I didnt shoot nearly as much as I thought I would. Likely better to have brought more film though then not enough. Here's Pt.1 of 3 that I have processed and scanned. I'm sorry for any repeated compositions, I'm just kind of throwing everything up there that I liked.

Also, I hate scanning Portra 160. Worst film for scanning hence why my color isn't super perfect.

Getting "Philly" again!

More to come. I still have another half roll in the Pentax I gotta kill which should have images from White Sands as well as a couple other neat locations. I also have about 4 or 5 rolls to process from the M5.

Are you using an ND filter? You're getting some pretty narrow DoF in really bright light. I like the effect!

no ND! just the power of medium format  ;D

Oh. Damn. That cab shot is killing me. Most beautiful thing I've seen in weeks? Months? Years? So good.

Film is magic. Everything comes out ... whether you can actually use it is another question, but everything somehow comes out...

Thanks Indofunk! The cab shot was quite a surprise. I didn't realize how many lights were actually in the background of my shot! Looks like the image got explored too

I love the night shots on Portra and the black and white of the road to ship rock.  I went down a lot of rough roads like that in Arizona and had to get out and hike a few times.  What were you filming with?  I usually shoot Regular 8mm and Super 8 but that camera looks more modern.

Quite modern. Its an HVX-200. Not my camera though, I was shooting film the whole time!

Really like the whole series. The low depth of field shots are magical.
Love the VLA shot (got a thing for telescopes).

I so adore this whole series! Really fantastic color in all the shots, and all of them have such character and feeling. I'm getting itchy for some Southwest travel!

V E R Y  NICE!

It's always cool to see photos taken by others of places I am very familiar with and see often.  It's like seeing my state with new eyes and from angles and perspectives that are refreshing.

Glad you liked it out here and was nice to put a face to the name.

show us more!!!   8)

Fantastic!

This thread is a bit like a like watching a good TV series, when you can't wait to see how the story continues next week.  ;D

Ya they are great. I like a wide range of them but the roadside shots in colour such as the abandoned motel and restaurant are some of my faves.

Manuel, the series can keep going! I have quite a bunch of images I would love to share. Just tell me when to stop!  :P

Don, I'm glad you like the abandoned stuff. We really don't get enough of that in Ontario. I'm not sure if thats a good thing or not but the grunginess and texture you get from natural weathering is amazing. Its always something I'm trying to emulate in my professional 3D work to make things look more realistic. It's very beneficial to see the real deal close up.

Thanks Becky! Likewise, it was great to put a face to the name. I really enjoyed new mexico. I do have to say that it did change my life a little bit. I would return back in a heart beat. Ask and you shall receive!

Really impressive set this. Much as I like B/W, I too am smitten with the new Portra. The 400 really is the bee's knees, overexpose, underexpose one or two, or at times even three stops? It takes it.

I'm with you 100% However not a huge fan of the 160, the 400 is spectacular. I sort of wish that I took the 400 along or ektar over the 160. But the price was right, live and learn.

Thank you Skorj. There's something about getting that "true" color that I love when scanning.
