: Aero Ektar on Medium Format Camera?
: gothamtomato April 19, 2014, 11:23:43 PM
Hi,

Does anyone know if an Aero Ektar can be 'converted' (for lack of a better term) to use on a medium format camera (like a Hasselblad)?

If anyone has any info about this, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks!
Debs

There's a guy on Facebook who makes all sorts of lens adapters for crazy lens/camera combinations. Calls himself "The Bokeh Factory" I believe. He has a photo of an Extar on a Contax MF body.

I would look at MF cameras like the mini Pacemaker Speed Graphic (not Crown), or the Rollei SL66. Focal plane shutters and easily adaptable lens mounting.

But the sheer size of the lens is going to make adapting it to anything smaller than a 3x4" camera difficult I would suspect.

Here is a resource site for Aero Ektar hackers. http://www.johndesq.com/graflex/aerousers.htm (http://www.johndesq.com/graflex/aerousers.htm)

But on the other hand, since it has such a long distance between the back end and the film, it should allow enough clearance for the mirror assembly.
But to use it you'd need a custom rack & pinion for focus, this is bound to make it as cumbersome as a speed graphic with a roll film back.

I´ve been looking at Aeros mounted on 4x4 lens boards for full size 4x5 Speed Graphics, and there isn´t much room to spare. Exactly how one is going to make these fit to anything smaller than a Mini Speed I don´t know.

My favourite conversions are the Liberators from John Minnicks, the RB 4x5 Graflexes with swing are stunning.

Ezzie: Wow - love the Liberator, but I have a feeling it may be just slightly beyond my budget! Or more correctly, the budget my wife allows me  :-\

I've got an old ektar that was fitted with a conversion to a screw 35mm mount (not sure which), so I'm sure its possible. However I think you'd be disappointed, you will want to use it wide open, and they are actually a little soft at maximun aperture - this will look worse on MF film - not sure its worth it to be honest.

or the older type of bronicas, or pentacon 6/exakta 66/kiev 60 I guess.
