The Barton Hills are situated southeast of the village of Barton-le-Clay in Bedfordshire and form part of the Chilterns. The steep dry slopes of these hills caught John Bunyan's eye in the late seventeenth century and the hills are one possible inspiration for the 'Delectable Mountains" in The Pilgrim's Progress.
The hills sustain some of the last remnants of chalk grassland north of London and hold the remains of an Iron Age fort - Ravensburgh Castle. The fort was stormed and captured by Julius Caesar in 54BC when he crushed the Britons led by Cassivellanus.
