: Light Seal Kit Supplier?
: Nigel June 16, 2013, 07:46:20 PM
Just a quickie, the two suppliers of light seal kits I've used in the past no longer seem to be trading. I've googled with no success, can someone recommend somewhere I can get the kit for an OM10, ideally in the UK?

As a side note I was given this OM10 by a friend of a friend, who said "if you don't want it I'll throw it away"!  :o It was in a real mess, but a little cleaning and it's come up nicely. It's a real pleasure to bring a lovely little forgotten camera back to life.

Not sure about kits Nigel but there's a bloke who works in Aperture's Museum Street shop who's replaced light seals for me in the past and done a good job, not very expensively...

Thanks Paul, but as this was a freebie I'm quite enjoying playing with it myself. It's not a tricky job, as long as you have the materials.

I admire your patience, Nigel. If I tried it, I'd probably end up buggering up a perfectly good camera.... :o Manual dexterity was never my strong suit.

Do you want them pre cut Nigel? They are dead easy to cut yourself from a sheet with a sharp scissors. I buy mine in sheets from this guy on ebay: http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/pilgrim18&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSX:SELLERID&_trksid=p3984.m1543.l2533 (http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/pilgrim18&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSX:SELLERID&_trksid=p3984.m1543.l2533) or try this one: http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/milly120786&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSX:SELLERID&_trksid=p3984.m1543.l2533 (http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/milly120786&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSX:SELLERID&_trksid=p3984.m1543.l2533)

I've used the second one for covering material but not for light seal stuff. They both do kits with small amounts of different types.

Thanks guys, I have bought the kits in the past but maybe I'll have to get some materials. I suppose that way I'll have enough for future cameras - should they happen along.

I had a friend once with a Minolta X-700(?) with had a light seal problem. I gave him a bunch of felt from 35mm film canisters and that worked for him.

I had a former camera repair person gave me various strips of material for me to cut to length but he also gave me a string wool? yarn type that also works well for light seal.

That might work. I was just thinking about that material. I think I fixed a TLR using craft foam from Walmart. The stuff was .88.

My Zorki has light seals made from self-adhesive felt. Something like this:

Edited: I should note that these were not the original light seals, of course!

Have you seen his prices? I could do twenty cameras (at least) for what he's charging for one kit.

I've ordered a supply of materials (that'll probably last me most of my life!).

Peter - do you find it is easier to cut those very thin strips with scissors or a scalpel and a steel rule?

I use a scissors, but they need to be sharp. Wife bought me a pair special as I kept stealing her sewing scissors. They don't need to be perfect as they get wedged into the gap and, if there's any corners to go around, don't try and cut them to fit, just cut a straight length and work it around the corners. Don't forget to lick the back first before fitting them - they go in much easier.
