: Hello! Large format amateur...
: Morgynn February 06, 2013, 04:31:36 PM
Hello all! I've just joined the other day after stumbling upon filmwasters.com trying to learn about my new Graflex Crown Graphic. I've figured it out just a bit... here is my first proper exposure. I am currently using Fuji FP100C45 with a polaroid 550 back. Don't worry... next I shall delve into sheet film and large format b&w development.

Any comments, feedback, criticisms, suggestions... are encouraged! I'm really just trying to find a community of people who are passionate about what I'm passionate about, you know? And I do have other cameras! This 4x5 is just my current obsession. It may remain that way for a while.

FYI I took a photo of a photo... with my phone... so it's less than ideal quality.

Morgynn, that's a gorgeous portrait - good work! A crown graphic is on my 'I'd love one but I'm scared' list!

Hi Morgynn and welcome to FW.

large format? Instant film? I think you've found the right community :)

This looks great to me!

I've not used mine yet and have sheet film to start with, but I'll get there. Keep posting and I WILL get mine going in the spring. Bought it from a great guy David Duhan in the south of England.  I'm in the 'have one, but haven't made the time to use it' category, as shameful as that might sound  :-[

Welcome to the group!

Bonjour Morgynn!

Nothing wrong with using some Fuji instant film. For color, you can't beat the convenience!

Nice portrait Morgynn... Crown Graphic is my latest toy and I love it! It'll probaly be your obsession for quite some time, or maybe forever?

Welcome!  A smashing start...but be careful: you take that one step down the road of LF and next thing you know you're shooting 8x10.

Welcome Morgynn, I'm sure you'll find this place a home from home.

I dabbled, briefly, with 5x4 (Wista) before realising that my passion is really 120 roll film (for landscapes and portraits) and 35mm (for travel and street).

Looking forward to seeing more of your work. The portrait you posted is lovely.

Welcome welcome welcome  ;)

That's a great portrait. Lovely composition, excellent use of DOF and what I suspect is a very patient model/subject. She has managed to look pleasantly surprised and spontaneously happy at the same time. Well done. I suppose the beer helped.

My own dabblings with LF portraits involve protracted periods of "hold it there...don't move...wait...now look a bit to the left....hang on, I meant right....yes RIGHT...LOOK TO THE RIGHT.....what? You were looking to the right?.....OK, sorry. Right, here we go.......(click)....Oh sh*t.....nope, nothing wrong, just left the darsklide in....let's try again....oh, the sun's disappeared......OK, just let me meter that again....hold on....wait, where are you going? Come back." etc.
 :D ;D :D

That's pretty much exactly how it's been going! I will run out of patient models very quickly I am sure. She is a good friend of mine and very supportive of my hobby, but you can only sit still for so long... ! Especially laying on some pretty uncomfortable rocks in the Texas hill country.

I've actually found someone in my city who is an "expert" at shooting 4x5 (and 8x10 for that matter) sheet film and developing it... he's teaching me next Friday... can't wait!  What is the latest collaboration?! I'd love to get involved!

I wouldn't be surprised if I spent the rest of my student loan money on an 8x10 setup sometime in the next year! Sadly...

Tough choice--education or LF.  For me it was food or film (in the fridge).  Film seems to be winning.
