It's April 28th 2013!
http://www.pinholeday.org/ (http://www.pinholeday.org/)
I'm building a 5 x 7 for the occasion! 8)
-
Thanks for sharing / reminding! So finally I have a deadline to finish my 18x24 (cm,not inch :) )
-
translation: by my honour, I shall not miss it this year.
-
I'll be partaking again. Just having a think about locations.
Becky - does your photo-hike event still take place?
-
Excellent! Thanks for the reminder - I built several cigar box, altoids tin, and paint can cameras this fall, and they are all ready for the celebration!

Leon,
I'm going to help out with a pinhole workshop in New Mexico this year....still working out details, but I'll post them here when finalized.
Hope I haven't bit off more than I can comfortably chew. :)
-
I still have a few pinholes I have never tried... it's probably the best occasion to try them out.
-
I am marking it on my calendar! I think this will be my fourth year being part of this adventure!
-
We'll be having an Pinhole Photo Walk again this year at the Event Space. Last year we went to Bryant Park and had Tom Persinger as a guest speaker. We had a nice turnout and a great time.
As soon as well decide what this one will be I'll post the info here and hopefully those of you in the New York area will be able to join us.
-
Marked on the calendar. Plenty of time to sort out a location and camera.
-
Wow, is it really that time already.
-
And it's a Sunday. I might not miss it this time. >:(
-
Thanks for the advance notice!
Enough time to have a second try at a decent hole for my 35mm convert, and adapt a few boxes for 5x4inch sheets!
-
My 23rd Wedding Anniversary, I'm sure my long suffering spouse would love to see my arsing about with the Zero and the Titan ... :D
-
dammit checked at home and I miiight be busy with relatives over. I'll have to be sure to prepare a camera in good time for the occasion!
Miles: go for it!! ;D
but seriously, if one has plans already, it can be a way to record the occasion ;)
-
I can just imagine family shots done with a pinhole: can you please hold still for say... 15 minutes. I need a bit of quiet time to concentrate on my exposure...
-
Woo! Fun.
I haven't used a pinhole yet, but I'm really fond of color medium format square pinhole shots. Any suggestions for cameras to pick up? I'm not against repurposing an old camera or building from scratch. People tell me it's simple but I just haven't taken the plunge yet....
-
A Holga is probably one of the cheapest and easiest cams to re-purpose.
Just take the lens and square lens holder part off, slap on a piece of aluminum from a soda, beer, etc. can put a tiny hole in it and you're pretty much good to go.
Black tape for a shutter. I've attached a photo of one I hacked last year.
Half the fun of pinhole day is making a camera for it. You've got lots of time to build and experiment before showtime arrives.
Many of us at FW have built cameras. Let us know if we can help, and be sure to show us what you come up with.
8)
Edit!
If you send me your address I"ll send you a Holga body that already has the lens off that you can modify for pinhole if you want it.
-
Love the form factor of a lensless Holga! Great idea. I may take you up on that Holga body...

go for it! it looks great :)

My new goal: Find a way to use "arsing about" in conversation.
-
LOL ;D
-
bump....
Is everyone ready???
-
No, still no Harman Titan 8x10 in the house. But the print drum and the 8x10 film holders are here ;D
-
some problems but it's not like I only have one pinhole camera ;)
anything I need to think of when spooling film from a 120 roll to those 620 spools?
-
I still got some time to hatch something...
I think I'm going to try to do a bit overkill on this one... maybe build a special toy if I can find the time ;)
-

Just steady as you go on the re-spooling. I seem to wind mine on too tight sometimes and then have a little bump at the end of the film under the paper backing, but it hasn't caused any problems so far.
:)

Oh, I now have a spare Holga body I could use ......
-
I'm going to drive holes through a plastic DVD case, front and back, and through the top side of a plastic video case, black them out internally, tape them together and use a 1inch square piece of aluminium can for the pinhole. I'm going to project light through the dvd layer, and video layer onto humble film, and be happy with that...
-
And if you do it right, you'll get nice moving pictures on the film!
:P
-
I have a pinhole lens board for my Tachihara, so I'll shoot it something on instant film with that. Shall we do a gallery to celebrate, or is there somewhere official where we have to post our efforts?
(Sent from Tapatalk 2)
-
I'm all for our own gallery here at FW.
You can upload to the WWPD site, but if you've been there, then you know it's quite extensive and LOTS of pinholers have photos there. Pages and pages to sort through....
It's easy to get lost in the fray.
So if we could have a gallery, or just a dedicated thread for pinhole day pix, I'm for that. 8)
-
And if you do it right, you'll get nice moving pictures on the film!
:P
Haha! I know I'm mixing my media, shamelessly, and trashing perfectly sound dvd/video cases some might opine, but with the depth I can just about get a 4inch diameter image on a 5x4 film sheet...I'd only need to take 24 images, scan and shrink them to fit an animated gif, and bob's yer uncle, pinhole timelapseotography :D
-
Speaking of...here's one from my first ever roll with a pinhole camera! The aforementioned lensless Holga astrobeck so nicely sent my way. Not terribly sharp (did I make the hole too big, or is this all camera shake?) but I'm very happy I got all 12 exposure to come out:

1. Remember to do it in the dark, or a changing bag.
2. The film will shift slightly when you roll it back on the 620 spool, due to the changing diameter. Be ready to relocate the tape at the start of the film, as you near the finish, or you will get a wrinkle that in some cams can cause feeding issues. Best to have a spare bit of tape handy. Sometimes the tape pulls some paper fibers with it, and it can not be as sticky.

Years ago I made a pinhole camera out of a broken Beirette... I called the camera "Pinrette" ::)

Thanks! I'll be sure to have some tape ready for when I do this.
if I rememer correctly, fuji films have a high sticky after removal rate (I remember using the same tape to put two rolls together and develop two 120 rolls on one film spool)

Working on it. I think I made a good pinhole. The rangefinder on this is camera is off and the lens is pretty nasty. Perfect candidate to pinhole. I will need a tripod and a way to share the photos soon. But for now I can experiment with this. I used a pin and some sandpaper to clean up the hole a little bit. It's my first. :-\
-
Sapata and Rafael, these look great! 8)
It's always a good thing when you can re-purpose a camera that has died.
I'm really anxious for pinhole day to get here! 8) 8)

With the bricks, you have to adjust the rangefinder by hand before you put in the coupling gear. Also, the lenses are reported to give a swirling bokeh...
-
I can fix it later. I have been gathering bricks and fixing then for awhile now. At last count I have 11. Only one of them is a real basket case. :o not the one below.

-
No rangefinder coupling gear?
That must be an old one.
The story of the brick is a pretty strange one. The older model cameras could be sent back to the company for an upgrade offered at a low cost. If only companies still did that!
-
This one is a "C" from 1938. There are earlier ones with an "f/s" shutter speed button. The rangefinder is uncoupled and there is no flash contacts. I found this at a camera seller at a flea market. I only got it because it was cheap. I guess we both though this camera was just a c-3.

bumping this up again since it's just a bit over a month away!
-
yeah, I better get cracking on finding another 620 spool! :O
-
And I better start building :-\
-
I'm currently working on pinholing a Zorki-4 aka The Zorkhole-4. The first attempt, Zorkhole-4 Mach 1, was with a pinhole created in brass shim with a #10 sewing needle. The results from the first test roll were terribly out of focus but a partial success as no light leaks were in evidence and exposure looked good. Hopefully with Mach 2 and a new pinhole I shall have better results. I want to have The Zorkhole-4 ready for WWPD.
-
my latest build was over the weekend.
I made a box out of scrap plywood to take 2.25 x 3.25 filmholders.
the first test came out okay...
Harman Direct positive paper exposed for 75 seconds then sloshed in caffenol for 4 minutes...
-
Nice, Becky!
-
Making myself a 4x5 pinhole over the weekend, a first for me. Using the same sort of plant pot from IKEA as for the P+S I made a few years back. And a Cambo 4x5 back I had lying about. Hope to finish it tomorrow. Have however no film for it at the moment, and at $100 a pack of 25 locally I see myself ordering from overseas. In the meantime I will test it out with a 120 4x5 back, 6x12 I suppose.
As far as I can work out it will be a 122mm f244, i.e. pin hole of 0.5mm. Pin hole a bit on the big size from what I've been able to discern. Should idealy be 0.4mm or less, and the aluminium taken from a thick skinned tin may make for poor results, we will see. I must admit most of the effort so far has been put into making an internal shutter, actuated by a cable release. Will post pictures when done.
-
I've been practicing ;)
-
If you're concerned about your actual pinhole, remember you can put it on a scanner to measure the size of the hole in mm and to check the quality. In my view having good roundness and being free of edge burrs is more important than having the perfect size for your focal length.
-
Thanks Sandeha. I did just that, since I don't have a drill smaller than 0,8mm, I had to use a punch and 1200 grain emery cloth and then measure the diameter by scanning afterwards. A bit of trial and error and I think I may have something to go with.
-
All this pinholia started me on a search for a new toy as sometimes the superwide of the Pinhole Goose can be limiting.
Now Pinhole Gander had to be about 35mm from a 35mm camera perspective and after a search here she is with a quick test shot just to check the parallax viewfinder.#
Jojonas, what can I say...!

Well, the camera is getting there. But to be 100% ready I need to find a cable release that
- doesn´t have a kink in it
- the sheath doesn´t come undone
- isn´t too long, so that it once it meets the resistance of the shutter spring it expands in the sheath
Maybe I should have opted for a lens cap off, lens cap on shutter ;) The shutter should be quite simple, but the return spring evidently shows up any weakness a cable release may have.
Below you can see the shutter mechanism out of the camera. The shutter is in front of the pinhole, meaning you see the rear of the shutter and the pinhole. The other pictures show the shutter as seen from the outside, open and closed. The camera itself, front and rear. The back is a Cambo I think, says its made in Switzerland. Anyhow, fits these IKEA plant pots to a T.
Shot a roll of 120 / 6x12 late this afternoon, will develop tomorrow and see what they look like.
-
Considering I had to remove and insert the dark slide as a means of shutter, making the camera shake for half the exposure, I am not to displeased with my two first pinhole frames ever. These were shot on 120, 6x9 and 6x12, but I hope to get some 4x5 in house before the 28th.
The 6x9 is and 8s exposure, the 6x12 is 12s.

Since taking the shots I have made a slightly smaller pinhole (0,4mm vs 0,5mm) and fixed the shutter.
-
Ooh, rather nice. Especially the second one.
-
That's really not bad at all Eirik! For me it will be interesting to see how long the exposures with paper negatives (ISO 3) and a f/400 pinhole will really take. I can only hope for good weather ;D
-
Thanks boys. These had the advantage of being shot on Acros (developed in Rodinal 1:50). I couldn´t be bothered to calculate for reciprocity, and Acros is a safe bet up to 120s.
-
Ezzie...those are terrific images...Would love to see your 6x12 camera..
-
Thanks Diane.
The camera is the 4x5 pictured further up, I just didn't have any 4x5 to test with, so I used a 120 Graflok back in the meantime. I'ts undergoing a paint job right now, but I hope to take it out again soon.

Pinhole Day is just one week away!
I'm ready to go, how about you all?
I'll be going on the road with these.
Two homemade ones from wood scraps and the "dicey" ones from repurposed craft boxes.
Recycle, reuse, re-pinhole!

Very nice "family" portrait Beck!

Yikes!
I really need to get into gear!
Thanks for the reminder :/

I´m ready. Just need to negotiate with wife to get time to do some shooting. This (also posted in the weekend thread, sorry) the last test shot on my DIY 4x5.
Now confirmed the diameter and f-stop are correct
Now confirmed that Shanghai film is like any other 4x5 film, notch upper right in portrait orientation
Now confirmed that I can use the FP4+ reciprocity chart for Shanghai 100
Now confirmed that R09 1:50 for 13:30mins gives nice tonality
Now confirmed I can merge two halves (Epson V500 doesn´t do 4x5) in PSE
Now I need more film holders, more PrintFile neg holders, and I would like to upgrade to a V700 methinks

Loaded two 8x10 backs with photopaper. Just need to figure out a way to keep the camera steady.

more PrintFile neg holders,
You can always use paper CD protector sleeves.

just a few pinholes in my bag of tricks..( for demonstration purposes only) and to inspire everyone to get out there and shoot a pinhole next Sunday!

this thread is starting to become a real good read :) things are heating up! the big day is coming~
today I took the 6x9 pinhole camera from sandeha and loaded it up with some 35mm polypan f+ film. we'll see if I can hold my trigger finger on that one ;)
in the mean time, here's a scan of the neg from that earlier shot. I'm surprised the paper registred so well in the shadows~

The film holders (18x24cm) are loaded up and the Brownie 127 pinhole conversion is waiting for its first outing, too. I can only hope I can find the time to shoot :)
-
Yesterday, I started working on my camera...
All the odd shaped parts are almost entirely finished cutting. Still a lot of work to do as it won't be anything remotely boxy!
I just hope there won't be any light leaks...

bump! 8)
Also, I tested a cigar-box pinhole last night at a board meeting I had to attend... 2 hours long exposure on expired photo paper.
Marinated in caffenol...my usual process these days. Actually I'm using caffenol exclusively now.
It's all a blur now...
-
well the sun has been up for almost an hour in the UK, and my film is developing, are we going to have a separate thread for pinholes or stick them in next weekend's 'weekend thread'?
-
Dave, Leon had asked for some for the podcast, so you can send some that way.
But I also think it would be fine if you started a pinhole day photos thread so the rest of us can show what we did.
I know I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone's day went! It's just after midnight here, so I have some sleeping to do first!

4x5 sheets hanging up drying - some look almost ok!

Donkey Dave is right, the sun is banging down here and I want a shot to exploit it big time... Off on the Superduke to nail one with the new toy...

I'm buried under a pile of undergrad-essay marking all day (and the next 3!). I wonder if I can get away with some pinholes from earlier in the week ...... ???
-
Miller you a biker too?
-
4 paper negatives exposed. Wow, f/400 at ISO 3 makes for long exposure times!
Let's see if I can get any pleasing results as this is the first times with that camera and paper negatives.
-
It's the first time in years that I've actually made one on the day itself. But I had to stand in the rain for 60 seconds. >:(
-
4 4x5 negs, and 8 6x9. However it was both bl..dy windy, and it rained. Not to mention it was below zero this morning. Since I´m a pedestrian these days, I cut the walk short. The weather got me stressed, so I think I managed to ruin at least one 4x5 neg, if not two Exposures ranging from 20s to 100s. Been a long weekend, so will not develop them tonight.
-
Disaster! I have, hanging to dry, three perfectly black paper negatives. Not quite sure what went wrong, the autopsy will begin tomorrow. I'm gutted.
-
major light leak..most probably! I have had this! very dis heartening..
-
Because I wanted to make something unique and truly awesome, I actually ended-up making the pinhole camera from hell!
OK, short description and story: I wanted to try and make an ultra telephoto pinhole camera with never before seen features. I ended up using a large cardboard tube as the body. That meant an 1841mm focal length on 35mm film. Angle of view was a measly 1.34°... so I needed a special viewfinder which I crafted using some spring hinges and MDF. It worked just like on the old folders, only the target at the end of the tube was smaller than a 35mm frame. Tripod mount installed at the center of gravity. Rotating camera mount with Nikon bayonet made from PVC and MDF. Pinhole made from a soup can lid (probably the best pinhole making material I've come across). Magnetic neodymium pinhole holder for easy interchangeability. A pretty incredible sight.
First, how do you carry a six foot long tube? Not that it's heavy in any way but it's dang cumbersome.
For that focal length, the correct pinhole size gave me an f/923... super dark. In full sun, I had a 15 second exposure on 320 ISO.
Then, there's the vibrations. Just breathing next to the thing sent it shaking like crazy. My tripod head was always slipping because of the leverage.
Also, there was the viewfinder's precision which wasn't that great and simply got worse when I accidentally dropped the tube. The cardboard got ripped by the shear force put on the viewfinder. The epoxy held-up great, it's just the cardboard that didn't fare so well. So now, I was shooting using a found rubber band to hold it all in one piece, getting strange looks from everyone...
Morale of the story: super sized pinholes with super long focal length and small apertures are not a good idea.
Hopefully, this won't be a total fiasco and I'll have a few color shots worth showing.
But at least it was sunny and warm...
-
Its the first thing I checked Diane when I came out of the darkroom but I couldn't see one. And I used and developed a pic with the same pinhole not three days ago. I think I just badly misjudged exposure :-(
-
Ok finally got there, here you go shot on the nice Ilford 4x5 (which only comes in one color) processed the Neg in my Jobo CPPA2 using the fuji hunt chemistry, scanned on the epson V750 and only spotted for dust otherwise its pretty much as scanned/shot.
Been saving this leaf for a while .
really good fun have reloaded the double dark's slides for some more !
-
I had my converted Brownie out with the B&H group earlier today (hi, gothamtomato!). Shot a roll of Fuji Acros, but I won't be able to get the results until later in the week.

Hi! Glad you could join us!
-
Yet to develop my shots. Got home from work and my wife had deemed it wise to rearrange all the furniture in our two living rooms. I had two choices. Join in and keep her happy, or ignore her grunts of despair and get my films souped. I opted for the first.
-
Ezzie, you are a very smart man! :)

Had a great, though thoroughly rainy, time. We were hemmed in to a small awning covered area of our meeting place by the weather, but made do admirably. Zero Image 4x5 Pinhole on Fujifilm FP-3000B 45 instant film.

Films now developed at least. See if I can make time to scan them tomorrow.
