THe last thread got too confusing ... and it looked like dungeness was more popular than anywhere else. So, as I am probably the most Local ... being a Kent (cough), here it is:
Itinerary:
Meet 09.00 at the following carpark in Dungeness
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=50.916838,0.977024&ll=50.917009,0.977225&spn=0.000874,0.002411&num=1&t=h&z=19 (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=50.916838,0.977024&ll=50.917009,0.977225&spn=0.000874,0.002411&num=1&t=h&z=19)
Stay in Dungeness until midday, then go to the Pilot for a pint and fish lunch (http://www.thepilot.uk.com/ (http://www.thepilot.uk.com/))
Then Head west to Pett Level - if people want to .... or we can discuss a 2nd location over lunch.
I'll be there, even if I am on my own :)
Cuckmere can wait.
-
I'll be there!
Benign Dictatorships work ;-)
I'm coming from Lewes area, through Battle, along through Rye
anyone carless need a lift?
-
Might even be there a bit earlier to catch the dawn light.
Don't forget to wear your thermals peeps as it can get a tad nippy down there, especially in Feb!
Paul
-
I was going to get there early too - I've got a day off to do photography - I'm going to make the most of it
-
I'll be there earlier too :)
-
Lara and I will aim to be there at least half an hour before sunrise.
Offer of a lift available to anyone within easy access from turn-offs en-route down the A12, M25, M20.
PM me if interested.
-
Wish I could join you, but I've just found out that the next monday I have a major essay due in :( On top of the difficulties of getting to Dungeness, I don't think I can afford an entire day off... Sorry though, wish I could join you all.
-
Sun up is 07:25.
I will probably go to Pett Level for sun up (assuming the weather makes it worth the effort) and catch up with you all later at Dungeness. I may have to go back to Hastings first to collect Mrs R so may not make it to Dungeness for 09:00. Don't wait - I'll find you. Don't mind doing Pett Level again in the afternoon if that's what other peeps want.
Dare I say that, if this is now the plan, I'll probably go to Seven Sisters on Sunday if anyone wants to join me. Probably just the morning.
-
The sound mirrors at Denge are just nearby too ...

Good point Miles ... But I don't think you are allowed free reign there ...? Isn't it tour parties only at certain times of the year?

Sorry about that Emma. We WILL do Cuckmere or somewhere down that way at some point. Maybe next time. good luck with the essay.
-
Yeah :) If you go up the lighthouse, there are some really cool mirrors at the top as well as a good view. I was there over the summer with some friends, bet you'll have a great time!
-
Just catching up with my Filmwaster news.
Kristina and I will be there with bells on, we will come down on the Friday if anyone is going to stay the night before.
We could have night before the shoot drinks and dinner.
Is anyone staying down there on the Saturday night?
cheers
Ken and Kristina

Does Pett Level actually exist - or have you made it up??
I shall be at Street Level Gallery Glasgow this Sunday coming :-)

They even have a website Andrea! http://pett-level.east-sussex.co.uk/ (http://pett-level.east-sussex.co.uk/)

Lara (Mrs LD), Miller and I will be arriving together. Aiming for Dungeness by sun up - hopefully some backlit derelict boat action going on - but probably hissing down and blowing a gale..... :o

Nope ... It says it is ... But it is not.
I went last year, you could still get right onto the island, takes 40 mins to walk from the road. Will see if I can make it down and show anyone that's interested.

Excellent - I'd be WELL-UP for that Miles. Maybe an afternoon thing, after i've warmed me cockles on some nice fried skate.
I think that will call for some HARMAN TiTAN action :)
-
PS - there's one up on the hills over Hythe too. Quite easy to get to (not really one for this day out, but for all the other Kent's, it's worth a trip)
-
This is the route in blue that I took last time. Parking my scooter and walking over the shingle, but it looks like maybe you can park closer ... maybe ...
-
Apparantly, a pretty nifty trick with ropes is required to get across...

I just walked over the Bridge :)
It was in place and looked like it hadn't moved for ages. Another chap there said it was always in place these days too.
But ... Maybe we'll all be unlucky.
-
I joined FW about a week ago, so I see this as my initiation. Please be gentle with me. I'd love to come, weather permitting - yes, I shoot indoors, mainly, in February.

Welcome, David.
It'd be great to have you there. We're a friendly bunch and you'll know us by the plethora of large and medium formatters hanging around, setting up tripods, scratching our heads and loading film. Lots of film.
Nice website, by the way. Only comment is that the photos change at a fair old rate and I can't find any way to slow 'em down a bit (or at all).
Paul.

Leon - according to the Sound Mirrors web site (oh, yes), there's also one at Abbot's Cliff (between Folkstone & Dover). There are several more on the East coast. See this handy map: http://goo.gl/maps/ZzBND (http://goo.gl/maps/ZzBND)

Hi Paul
Pleased that you like the website - thank you. I wanted my port to read like a movie, so you are correct, the individual pictures can't be slowed down. Two reasons for this - I didn't feel that I could keep a viewer's attention for more than 90 seconds and some of the photos look better the less you look at them!
All special effects were created in-camera or in the lab (I don't have a darkroom - yet...) and NOT using PS, apart from re-sizing for the web.
Hope to meet a few of you on th 9th
-
Hi David.
Laudable intention but some of us like to take our time with these things. It's possible that not allowing viewers any control (even a pause button) might switch them off altogether.
I don't have a darkroom (these days) either. However, like many on this site, I use a hybrid approach - scanning the negs and then getting them how I want them using CS3 and Silver Efex Pro. I tend not to go in for heavy-duty post-processing work as I pefer to retain as much of the film's characteristics as possible - given that scanning and Phooshop will always have some impact.
Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff. Incidentally, have you done an "intro" on the main forum? Not mandatory but it'd be a good "knowing me / knowing you" opportunity.
Regards,
Paul.

"persistent rain, sleet and snow spreading eastwards across the UK on Friday, with further wintry showers following"
Uh oh!
-
I may need to pull out anyway. :( I badly did my back in a week ago and am still at the, unable to sit or stand for longer than 5 minutes, stage! I shall be trying my best to get fit though!

Uh oh!
Just checked "uk.weather.com" and the 10-day forecast for TN29 says "am clouds / pm sun":
http://uk.weather.com/weather/10day-Romney-Marsh-TN29 (http://uk.weather.com/weather/10day-Romney-Marsh-TN29)
Probably as well to pack your waterproofs as well as a pair of Speedos :D :o

Oh no.... :o Phil, get yourself lubed up and sorted as fast as possible. Seriously, I hope you get you back well again soon as I know exactly how a bad back feels. Hope you can make it but I'm sure there'll be more FW outings to come in 2013. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
-
Thanks, Paul. I think it will all hinge on my ability to drive for over 3 hours.
-
Sorry to hear about your back Phil - hope it improves ... Cocodamol by the ton usually helps me when mine goes. Also sends me a bit loopy, which I enjoy perhaps a little too much.
Here's hoping we get to catch up this weekend, but no stress if you can't make it.
-
Thanks, Leon
I have been on the Cocodamol and can vouch for the odd state of mind :P Here's hoping. I seem to have turned a corner so I'll have to see just how fast it heals up.
-
I just checked the met office forecast - which only goes up to friday .... but it's looking good for the SE corner. Cold, but sunny with some clouds by Friday.
-
Just to reiterate... it will be cold! With very little way of shelter from the wind there, hats, gloves etc. are a must!
I'm also hoping to bring along a friend who wants to give his Pentax 67II an outing!
Looking forward to it already!
-
Sadly I won;t be able to make it, I'm moving out of my flat this Thursday and have all the stress of removals, and moving in with my sister temporarily until I can get into my new flat.
:(

You boys are making a City lad worried with that kinda Scott of Antartica talk (pic' to follow)... Jeez, methinks travel light and use gear that will not require the removal of mittens... Solved: Pinhole Goose with a couple of loaded backs ready to lash on... Would love to bring the Polaroid Goose with 75mm lens and go tough like Mr Pentax 67II but hell no... ;)
-
Well, I'm packing the Chamonix, and some as yet not announced very large camera that I can't talk about at this point (cough).
-
Leon, you're all smoke and mirrors ;D
I am getting better quickly - I'd hate to miss this.
-
Met office forecast (as always, subject to change):

Fog › Mist › Sun › Cloudy is the order of the day.
Light winds, and cold cold cold.
-
Mist and fog until 0900 (maybe beyond) could be interesting.
-
Weather sounds perfect
I was out today and it was f'ing freezing. The wind chill was pretty extreme, despite jumpers, 'long johns' and a balaclava.
Looking forward to it, what time is everyone getting there. Its not too far for me so hope to be there before 7 to get some nice light maybe. Thinking of packing Linhof and Titan pinhole, hoping not to run out of film holders, so will bring holga and 120 as back up.

My missus (Lara), Miller and I will be arriving in the same car. We're aiming to be at Dinginess between 06:30 to 07:00 (in good time for sun fog up. I'm packing a Hassy 500c/m and Lara will have her Nikon D700 (I haven't quite persuaded her as to the merits of film wasterage yet). Miller's taking something called a "Goose". Well so long at it doesn't crap in the back of my motor, it'll be welcome..... :o
-
My plan is to get there at around 7-ish, but I'm on some new pills that are making it difficult to come-to in the mornings ... So don't sue me if I'm a bit late :)
I was thinking to bring the Chamonix, but that limits me to 12 shots. Whereas I could bring the horseman, and loads of rolls 120, but fiddly controls make for sore cold fingers. Perhaps I'll just bring the bronnie.
Then again, there will be the enormous big other camera too. ;)
-

You are such a bloody tease! ::)

Methinks it has the numbers 10 and 8 plus the words Titan on it!?... ;D

Y'know what, Paul, that was the first thing that I thought when I saw reference to "enormous big other camera". Great minds, eh?
Hope it's not windy on Saturday as a plastic 10x8 could handle like a kite or a sail if not careful.... :o
-
Okay, guys - I'm sorry, but, I won't be there tomorrow. My back is getting better, but, I don't think it will hold up to 3 1/2 hours of driving :'( To be honest, I'm well pissed off.
I hope you all have a fab time - the weather looks like it will be great, albeit, cold.
Here's to anoanotherne, very soon.
-
Sorry to hear that Phil. I was really looking forward to catching up, but getting your back sorted is far more important.
Here's an idea - how about scouting out a suitable location down your way for later in the year? I've got a mate in Langport who I really need to catch up with, so it would be a double bonus for me.
-
I'd second that idea, Leon. I'd forgotten about the M5 corridor ...
Hope youse lot have a good'un down there.
-
Sorry to hear that Phil, was hoping to quiz you about the States, another day.
-
well we rode down from the big smoke today and have had a leisurely afternoon on the sea front.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in the morning
:)
-
Leon, that sounds like a great idea. I shall be thinking of you all - I would hope that podcast material will come from this trip. As well as some great photos, naturally ;D
-
Hope the weather is good enough and hope to see everyone's results later.
Dungeness is a bit of a pain to get to by public transport (which is why I've never been before) and I'd only consider that if I was staying over, but that's out of the question for now.
If there's another Filmwasters' trip in the south east later this year, I'd love to come along!
-
Grrrr! I can't make it today. I got 1 stop in the train and some poor sod had thrown themselves in front of another train one stop further down the line. So I'm knackered.
Hope that you have fun, looking forward to seeing the results and I'll catch you at the next trip, for sure.
-
Thanks everyone. I had a great day, really enjoyed it. :D
Apologies to those I didn't get to say goodbye to, let's not leave it too long before we do it again.
Nigel
@AJShepard - next time worth seeing if someone's coming from your direction, most people are usually happy to car share.
-
Thanks everyone. I had a great day, really enjoyed it.
Me too. I disappeared as soon as I saw the rain coming. See you all next time I hope.
-
I had a great day - thanks to catching up with some familiar faces, and meeting some new ones. Thanks to everyone who made it along. I'm looking forward to seeing the fruits of everyone's efforts.
PS - thanks to the weather gods for a wonderfully sunny day in the most part.
-
Phil - really sorry you couldn't make it. We missed your company and really look forward to meeting up next time.
AJShepherd - I can only echo the earlier comment. I'm always happy to offer lift / car-share with any FW and I doubt I'm unique in that respect. Put a shout out and see if someone lives nearby or can pick you up en-route.
Zapsnaps - that's a horrible thing to happen and I feel for the poor bugger who felt they had no other option and also for you as having plans destroyed at the 11th hour is frustrating. As a commuter to London every weekday, I know EXACTLY how you feel.
It was a great day out - thoroughly enjoyed it. Hope a few of my snaps turn out okay. Lovely to meet a few new faces and re-meet in person those I don't get to meet other than on FW outings. Lara, Miller and I headed home when the rain came as I can't think of anything much more bleak than Dungeness in a sleet / rainstorm - though I'm eternally thankful that the weather was with us most of the day.
I must, must, must practice more at loading the Hasselblad cassettes as I lost two films (24 hopefully good shots) by putting the stuff in the wrong way round. >:( :-[
Looking forward to everyone's photos.
Let's do it again (somewhere else) in Spring...... :)
-
Glad it went well. I was thinking of turning up with the kids in tow, just to say hi etc., but realised I'd probably end up feeling frustrated about not being able to join in the snappage, so we stayed in London instead. I'm looking forward to seeing results.
-
Come on guys, where are the photos???? I thought you would have all had them posted last night ;D
See, it's film >:( I don't know why we bother :-X
-
Just to add my thanks to everyone for another agreeable outing and also for making my two guests feel so welcome (another couple of new FW recruits methinks). I managed to say goodbye to most people but to those that I didn't... thanks for your company!
Am sitting typing this while it's dull, grey and wet outside... the weather gods were indeed with us yesterday.
Paul
