I stumbled upon a large corridor of prints in the V&A a few weeks ago, completely by accident, AFAIK they're not advertised - just highlights from their collection put out on display for a while I guess. I can;t even remember which corridor now.. but there were early daguerrotypes/tintypes/ Cartier-Bresson, Julia Margaret Cameron, Cecil Beaton, Robert Frank.. all the greats.. it was a fantastic collection.. I'll go back and check it out again and remember to note down where it was next time..
Anyone know of anything else on thats good? I can't see anything interesting on at the moment, apart from this Ansel Adams exhibition at The Maritime Museum http://www.rmg.co.uk/visit/events/ansel-adams (http://www.rmg.co.uk/visit/events/ansel-adams) - I'm not a big fan or anything but I'd quite like to see his prints in the flesh.. its only £7.

Suzi - you can view the whole print collection if you ask. They've got some amazing stuff archived away upstairs. Paul Caponigro's stonehenge portfolio for a start :)

My wife and I have promised to go and see the Cecil Beaton exhibition at the Imperial war museum sometime soon, it's 8 qiud I believe.

I went to see the Moriyama/Klein exhibition at Tate Modern today.. Its really good, some amazing and i loved Klejn's NEW york and tokyo photographs..

i visited "The birth of photography – Milestones of the Gernsheim Collection" at the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum in Mannheim today.
Over 250 images including the first photograph ever – Joseph Nicéphore Niépce's View from the Window at Le Gras.
It was really impressive, especially the images from the 19th/beginning of the 20th century.

I work in London (but in the City, so a bit of a trek for a lunchtime). However, I'm intending to visit one weekend soon. I've also got to see the Ansel Adams exhibition due to start in November (I think) in Greenwich. Some interesting stuff on the go in London just now.

It does, but I absolutely loathe visiting the Barbican. I always get lost and disorientated.. :-\

OK, the Beaton exhibition is WONDERFUL! Highly recommend it to everyone, its not just his war photographs either (there are some of his famous society and celebrity ones, as well as both of his Oscars, some costume design and his diaries, telegrams, Life magazine cover, some cameras..) but the war photographs are stunning, I'd only seen a few of them before and there are loads exhibited here. 8)

I still haven't got round to the Cecil Beaton at IWM but will most likely try and twin it with this one at Somerset house soon

I've just been around the World Press Photo exhibition at the South Bank Centre - http://www.worldpressphoto.org (http://www.worldpressphoto.org) - on the ground floor as you come in. One side has more documentary/nature pictures, and the other is more journalism and recent world events (including a couple of dead bodies, to warn anyone who might want warning). It's a fairly small exhibition and probably not worth making a special trip, but if you're in the area, worth a look.

Just went to the HCB+others one at Somerset House and it is great - it isn't a HCB exhibition as there are only about 14 of his pics (though all good) but the others are on a theme of colour street photography, ranging from the 60s to present day, and the quality is very high. Well worth a look if you're in the area - free too.
The only thing that spoilt it slightly for me was that the first few rooms are really badly lit, which made it hard to actually see the photos. The rest is fine though. I mentioned this on the feedback sheet (also that I'd seen it on Filmwasters!)

Lara and I have just returned from London, having gone there to see the Klein / Moriyama exhibition at Tate Modern.
Having seen the documentary on the BBC and seen how William Klein works (and taken a shine to the fella) I really enjoyed his part of the exhibition which was worth the entrance fee on its own.
As for Daido Moriyama, I was less taken by his work. I'm not saying it isn't good but it's an acquired taste and I'm struggling to acquire it. His work just seems too random and lacking cohesion. Maybe that's deliberate but it doesn't sit well with me.
Can't wait to see the Kenna exhibition. Didn't have time today; maybe next weekend.......

I went to see the Klein/Moriyama yesterday and I sort of agree with the above. I wasn't familiar with Klein beforehand but I was stunned and inspired by his half of the exhibition, and will definitely be looking up more of his work.
I thought I would like the Moriyama more, but ended up thinking that his early stuff there was too heavily abstract for me. I'm fine with abstract art in general, but something didn't click... it felt like, you know, random pictures of stuff, few of them really interesting. I got the feeling that a gallery might not be the best place to view it, as it encourages you to look at pictures as individual pieces, as opposed to in a book/collection way where you might find it easier to see a coherent aesthetic thread. On the other hand there are some gems in the later work, of which there is a lot.
It's a huge exhibition by the way. Finishes on 20th Jan so there's some time left to go.
