: Preliminary Sketches from Orkney
: LT June 21, 2012, 09:08:04 AM
I've devved the first 6 sheets and scanned some of them.  They are only general interpretations, I hope to get a bit more expressive with them in the darkroom.  The "thing" in the 3rd picture is a pelvis and rib from a whale that beached in the mid 19th century - I believe it was erected back then, but was recently re-set to preserve it:

Lovely stuff, Leon. Can't wait to see  them once you have worked on them!

They look excellent now, Leon. I'm sure they'll look even more stunning once you've weaved your magic in the darkroom.

Excellent! It is one of my dreams to visit those isles... I am looking forward VERY much for your darkdoom interpretations of these images - I hope you'll be leaving these online to allow us the curious lot to compare... :)

Thanks all.  I can't wait to print them.

Last three for a while - there was some amazing light there, even for June.  The low sunlight between 8pm and 10:30pm was amazing - and then another 3 hours of twilight after that. The sky was blue all night :o) I still have more to develop, but only N+ and N- ... not quite a full load of those yet, so will wait for a while to save on dev and fix etc.

leon, your shots of the stennes and brodgar stones really blow me away! I particularly like your second set of three shots.

Again - thanks for the comments all. I have learned much from this trip about LF photography.  In short ... IT ROCKS.

Ok, I've had a LF camera for 2 years now.  But I just haven't really used it much.  The old Shen Hao was a pain to use, a but clunky and too large to backpack (for me at least).  But the Chamonix was the right thing to get in terms of portability and ease of use.

But, the main thing is, before I went, I did a shed-load of zone system film speed and development times testing (including n+ and n-) to see how much this would really help as far as negative quality etc goes.  I chose hp5+ as my film and after some messing about with divided D23, I opted to stick with my fave pyrocat HD for the development.

I can safely state that, for me, it was the best way I could waste a 25 sheets of film.  I learned that it is REALLY important to get exposure and dev times right.  I was so stuck in my slap-dash "sort it out with split grade printing" attitude but now I see that the negative will really thank you for taking the time to get it right. And boy is this the case in LF.  The quality of the tonal separation, gradation and detail is truly something else which I think is evident in much of these scans.

LF is king - no doubt about it.

Great to hear Leon. LF for me is about making images, yes it takes 20 minutes to set each shot up, you compose under a sheet of black cloth looking at an image which is upside down and back to front and the amount of images that can be taken in a day (excluding the ridiculously long Orkney days!) can be counted on two hands. But it slows the whole process down, it makes you think, it makes you appreciate your surroundings more and best of all you end up with thin sheets of acetate that contain a whole world of wonder and beauty in amazing detail. Hope to see them in the flesh one day.

Stunning image, this last one..
And thank you for summing up the charm of LF.. It encourages me to take my LF camera out more and more often. Although the heavy old Sinar really is a pain to haul on one's back, it's definitely worth it.

Some wonderful shots Leon. My favourites are Mull Head, Rackwick Bay and the Rackwick pebble. Super stuff.
