: LT February 11, 2012, 01:57:30 PM
Suffolk wins out.

We need someone with knowledge of the area to sort out the locations.

I was thinking later March is better than early april (school hols etc) so I suggest we go for Sat March 23rd - get it in your diary!

Looking forward to it.

I'm happy to sort out an itinerary... been going to Southwold for over 25 years so am quite familiar with the area.

I'm afraid I won't be able to make it, we're away that weekend. :'( Whatever the date, someone won't be able to make it.

Great news - it's in the diary.  Norwich are playing at home that day, but if the Filmwasters are coming to town, I think I can forego my football fix.  A day out in Southwold is always a treat - sun (sometimes), sand, beach huts, the pier, lighthouse, good pub lunches and the harbour for local fresh fish (and photos).

This is a bit of a way for me, but, I am aiming to be there. A two stage journey may be needed!

Just got to get agreement on swapping a trip to the lakes for sunny Southwold instead. Fingers crossed.

I'm a natural panicker Paul .... I must have a seratonin deficiency. I'm panicking that I've panicked you now. And then admitting that causes me anxiety. I need a darkened room and some chemicals to get me off the ceiling now.

: Paul Mitchell February 29, 2012, 06:44:40 PM
As Baldrick would say "I have a cunning plan..."

OK the suggested plan for the Suffolk day out is as follows...

We'll plan to meet outside Southwold Pier between 9-10am which will give people coming from afar a chance to arrive without having to panic if you are delayed for any reason.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=The+Southwold+Pier+,+Southwold,+Waveney+District&hl=en&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=24.248373,50.141602&oq=Southwold+Pier&hq=The+Southwold+Pier+,+Southwold,+Waveney+District&t=m&z=15 (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=The+Southwold+Pier+,+Southwold,+Waveney+District&hl=en&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=24.248373,50.141602&oq=Southwold+Pier&hq=The+Southwold+Pier+,+Southwold,+Waveney+District&t=m&z=15)

For those that do arrive earlier you'll have plenty of photo opportunities of the Pier and the surrounding area. For those insomniacs, or avid 'golden hour' togs, dawn is at 5.53am... for those with magnetic duvet's here's what it looks like at 4.50am on a July morning...

There are a few parking places in front of the pier so if you see one grab it, otherwise you can park along the seafront. Now, unless the council have recently decided to introduce parking restrictions (which I doubt), parking is free all the way along the front. If, for any reason, there are no spaces and you don't want to pay to park in the council run car park (just to the North of the pier) you may be able to find spaces along Pier Avenue, the road you will have approached the pier on.

After we've all mustered at 10am I suggest we leave the cars and have a relaxed walk along the seafront until we reach Gun Hill and the famous beach huts nestling on the sand dunes. From there we can have a walk back to the cars via the town to either take pictures, shop at the outrageously overpriced boutiques or call in to the Black Olive deli for a famous 'Ginger Pig' sausage roll.

Once back at the cars we'll form a convoy for a 5 minute drive down to the harbour. I would imagine that it will be around lunchtime so just in time for a spot of lunch at the Harbour Inn perhaps? After lunch I suggest we take a walk down by the harbour where there's lots of old boats, fishermans huts etc. There's also plenty of photo opportunities down by the harbour mouth. If the foot ferry is running we could also pop across the river to Walberswick which has plenty more film fodder.

Once we've all made our way back to the Harbour Inn I suspect it's going to be late afternoon so perhaps a quick pint and review of the day is in order before we all go our separate ways.

If anyone has any questions or needs any additional info let me know.

Looks like a great plan, Paul.

I can confirm that the "Ginger Pig" is very, very nice indeed and a snifter or two of Adnams ('cos it is Southwoldish) will also help it go down great guns.

From memory, there's parking along North Parade but I can't remember if it's free or metered. If it's not free, we'll all need to remember to bring some £1 coins and assorted shrapnel 'cos the little peak-capped parking nasties will be out on the prowl, no doubt...... >:(

Hi Vid and a warm welcome to FW!

What we're not here is cliquey so as long as you want to waste film you're more than welcome.

Not everyone in the forum is following this thread so do you want to do a quick 'hello' post and tell us a bit more about yourself?

Vid - you'd be more than welcome to join us.  It's looking like it will be a day for new faces.

And, as Paul says, an introduction thread would be good - welcome to FW.com

I will travel up from stinky London, I will take my motorbike unless there is a local FW who is going in their car and can offer me a ride, I am more than happy pitch in for petrol.

If you are a FW (London chapter) and on a motorbike, we can go terrorise some Nuns and pensioners on the way to Suffolk - its what us motorcyclist do!

I live over near East Dulwich. So expect it will take 2.5hrs to get there so I will leave between 7am and 7.30am

I also feel it is a day to "Release the beast" I haven't fired the RB67 in anger for a while!

mmmmmmmmmmmmm RB 67 mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

cheers

Ken, I'd be very wary of paying cash on collection for an eBay transaction ... there have been horror stories of sellers claiming they haven't been paid, which they can do since there's no online evidence of payment.

Sandeha, thanks ever so much for your care and concern with this very valuable warning.

I do only ever use paypal, however for this item it is £1800.00 start for a 28mm lens, something in the back of mind (my wife's fist) tells me I don't think I will be buying it  ;) :D

However thank you for caring for a fellow filmwaster.

Here's hoping you all have a great time whatever the weather - and don't forget, misty can make for good piccies too if you can master the exposures required.

Was keen to come down - and Paul and Lara kindly offered to put me up in their plush pad in Braintree but I really must put family first this weekend and so I'll be in doors in sunny Cheshire instead.

Looking forward to hearing how it goes and seeing some nice images taken on the day.

Dropped into Calumet to get some film supplies this morning on the way to work. It was so much fun I should do that every morning on the way to work.

Didn't realise I was so low on 120 format B&W ISO100

I am going to release the beast - RB67 and Mrs Ken will be sacheing around with the C220 accompinied by the recent addition of a 135mm lens  :)

Did I ever say that the woman I married is a photographer as well, it really makes life so much simpler.

Just got back home after a week's auditing stint at our operations centre in Manchester and need a quick catch up. Most seem to be aiming for a 9-10 a.m. meet. However, in all seriousness, is anyone genuinely intending to be there for sun up? If so, I'm up for it.

Also, I've got a new phone (with a temporary number) so I'll PM Leon, Peter R, Paul M and Ken just in case. If you wouldn't mind sending me yours in return, I'd be grateful.

Cheers and see you there tomorrow morning.

PS @Phil B - after you've sorted the topsoil, what are you going to do in the afternoon??!!  ;)

Hi Paul. Despite already being here, I'm not sure I'm going to make sun up. Too many early mornings this week already I'm afraid. I might get out before breakfast but not sure when it will be.

My sincere sympathies, Phil - and you're a much fitter bloke than I am right now. Always remember that there's little in this world that can't be done better if it's done slower - and that death is just nature's way of telling you to "slow down".

Well we got there about 10.30am, it took us 3 hours on the knocker, we had a longer than expected stop in Chelmsford.

A big cup of coffee later and a quick call to Leon got us settled.

I was great meeting all the gang, some got ther eye in and where snapping away, I struggled abit but still took some shots.

Lunch, a stroll around the harbour, afternoon tea, then it was time to go home.

Landed square on 7.30pm, 3 hour run.

it was a great day - and bigs props to Paul M for being so organised (and for bringing the Doughnuts).

Sorry I sloped off.  The early start suddenly hit me about 3:15 pm and all I could hear in my mind was (bed, bed, bed) so home I went.  I sent a farewell text to those who's number I had and I hope you managed to pass this on to the others.

It was great seeing old faces and new ones too. I took more pics than I usually do on these things, despite the harsh sun and blue sky. Now ... when will I have time to develop all this film!

cheers all

What a cracker of a day......!!

Smashing venue, excellent itinerary worked out by Paul M (and a BIG thank you to him for that), amazing weather, lots of lovely stuff to photograph and, top of the bill, a great bunch of FW making the most of it all. Peter R showed us his Holga on steroids with a proper lens and I doubt many of us were using similar, let alone identical, kit to each other. Can't wait to get my stuff processed and to see everyone else's work.

Some gatronomous foody highlights at Southwold as well: Earl Grey tea and a bacon/egg bap with Leon early doors, a Ginger Pig with Paul M at lunchtime and a communal slurp of Adnams bitter at a harbour-side pub before the afternoon's exertions.

Talking of exertions, I managed to pull my back whilst crouching down for a shot at Walberswick and decided to retire, injured, about 4pm. Nevertheless a great day and fantastic to meet everyone.

I mentioned I was trying to think of a collective noun for a collection of Filwasters. Here are my suggestions:

A "roll" or a "sprocket".

: Paul Mitchell March 25, 2012, 11:26:39 AM
Glad you all enjoyed the day! By the time I had walked back from Walberswick everyone, apart from Thil, had left! Hope you arrived back at your destinations OK.

The weather was perfect for a day at the seaside but a tad to harsh for any moody images. Saying that the dawn was magical with all the mist, I just hope some of my images are OK to share.

Thanks everyone again for your company.

Paul

p.s. Sorry Leon but what was left of your doughnuts were spotted by my son on my return... he told me to say 'cheers'! ;D

I enjoyed the day too, fantastic weather and wonderful to put some faces to names. I too sloped off at around 1:30 as my cold (obviously man flu) got the better of me and Lemsip™ beckoned.
I would have like to have chatted longer to you all, now I need to find time to develop my photos without too much latency.

I though a group of Filmwasters should be called a 'spool'

Regards to everyone, thanks to Paul who organised us and provided donuts.

It was a really fun day and great to meet up with you all. The location was great - I especially liked the harbour with all the boats, tractors, machinery and dismantled engines lying around. Thanks again to Paul for sorting the plan out.
Like LD I had a few foodie highlights as well. Had the most amazing sausage roll in town and being a seafood lover found lunch at the harbour inn to be fantastic. I went back with a couple of kilos of mussels to cook for dinner too.
Thil
