Title: Official: Happiness Thread
Post by: LT on September 14, 2011, 08:21:46 AM
Ok - there's suddenly too much negative energy flowing around here, man.

This morning, I woke up and the sun was shining. I have my health, a roof over my head, family to care about, I'm allowed to claim rights against the State and I'm lucky enough to have enough wealth to be able to fund leisure activities.

This is amazing enough compared to most of contemporary global population, let alone throughout the rest of Human history.

Life is great.

So - what made you happy today?

:)

This post :)

Also I just slept for 8 hours solid, the sun's shining and I woke up to an email from my first proper stranger job (which I shot all film) saying she had a tear because she liked the pictures so much...and that's after me being SO worried about them, so big smile here :D

1) I'm alive and my wife's alive
2) The cats haven't puked on the stairs
3) It isn't raining
4) The train was, for once, on time departing and arriving at destination
5) I didn't forget my works security pass - like I did yesterday
6) I'm planning to have a lunch hour today
7) My divisional director is out of the office all day
8) Looks like I'll be getting a "new" 28mm lens soon

I've done four hours of writing already today and the end is in sight! Then I'll finally get out to take some pictures that are not between home and the office.

That said my Olympus Pen (not the F- just the original tiny P&S) makes me happy on my walk to work- today was ace- sun shining, brooding stormclouds and weirdos on a railway bridge. Hope the pictures turn out....

 - Youngest son cooked a toad in the hole for brunch this morning
 - Concussion from accident has worn off
 - Ordered an Epson v700 scanner  ;D ;D ;D
 - Middle son off to Keele in two weeks, means I can start turning the loft into a darkroom  ;D ;D ;D ;D

  - Going to Belfast today and taking an Argus 75 with a trimmed down Fomapan 100, hoping I get a mo to take the odd pick

I'm getting married on Friday, with 200 of my closet friends and family here in Cornwall. Can't wait!

And 2 of my closest friends are taking the pics for me, one on polaroids, admitteldly one on digital, but he is a damn fine photographer.

So that is what is making me happy!

(and there is surf at the moment too!)

Lunchtime and no one has crapped on my day yet...   :)

Yep, the thrill of the toys make up for the daily grind and a blast on this will clear everything away...

Ok, methinks I'll go back to basics and find a couple of conkers to challenge the boy later...

I want a V700 when they're 200 nicker and have a nice wedding day Chalky...

Well, we had a nice thunderstorm last night (I just love those... so easy to fall asleep by their rumble).
I got some prints back from the lab last night and they were just great.
This morning's banana tasted good... not too greenish, not too ripe.
There weren't too many seeds in the orange juice.
I actually learned how American Standard test their toilets (quite interesting).
I log on here and there are all these wonderful people leaving messages.
I still want that Audi R8 but I'm happy I got a decent ride that works at the turn of the key.

This entire thread has thrilled me beyond words...I always try to look at life as a joy!
Sure, there is all the ugliness that we are subjected to by the media..but just once in awhile they tell us some good things..Like the young man who was pulled from beneath a burning car after he and his motorcycle had collided with a car..several strangers literally lifted the burning car while another stranger pulled him to safety...this happened a day or so ago...
No matter how bad things get there is always tomorrow and the sun will come up and something good will be behind the next door..This idea has seriousely gotten me through some rough times in my life..and the fact that I have two most wonderful adult children and a grandaughter that I adore...And an incredible "young"  :) husband that encourages me at every undertaking.
I also get to meet up with some fellow "filmwasters" in a couple months, in Paris and London...Now who could ask for more!!
I try to share what I have with others...even if it just a way of thinking!

well for starters, today's my birthday.   ;D

I also had a good time with my 10 year old this morning.  He has to pick his first instrument to learn to play in the school band.  He couldn't make up his mind between the trumpet and alto sax, so I played an old grainy B&W video of Miles Davis and John Coltrane trading off licks.  He really paid attention, watching the fingers and body movements, and after a long pause, said, "Definitely Miles Davis.  I'm playing the trumpet."

Smiling?

There's been a few things that have made me mildly unhappy this week but off to Santiago de Compostela for the week end on Friday.  That makes me v happy.

Also, will get to try out my modified Coronette Ambassador in the "field" as it were.  I removed the lens and replaced it with the plastic lens from a child's magnifying glass.  (bought on e bay - not stolen from a child).

Check this little beauty out. Initial tests have been encouraging - will post the results soon.

Laughed at Phils conkers comment. I have no idea what that means. And congrats Chaulky!

What made me happy today was talking to the guy who is going to clear my road so hopefully by Friday I can actually leave my house.

The squirrels have found the chestnuts. No conker is safe from now on!
But watching them do all the acrobatics required to get them is quite some fun :)

Laughed at Phils conkers comment. I have no idea what that means. And congrats Chaulky!

Conkers are the nuts inside horse chestnuts. They're nice and smooth and have a lovely wood grain when fresh out of the skin. It's also one of the best times to play with them :)

Fantastic bunch of people around here!! Glad to be part of it.  ;D

Well, it did not happen today, but very recently my reassignment petition was granted, so in one month time we are moving out of the Philippines and heading to Khartoum/Sudan for one year. It´s a big move but we hope it´s gonna be for the best. Sure there are tons of Dust and I have been told the Heat is quite a thing (developing times..) but I guess will be super interesting  :D

Chalky, congrats!
Vicky, that is nice..

Leon: Shut it, you old hippy  ;D ;D ;D

Carlos: Good luck with the move. It only seems like 5 minutes ago that you were still living in 'boring' old Spain...and now you're all over the place.

Chalky: Fantastic news. Cornwall rocks and so does one's wedding (well, my second one was awesome...my first one I'd rather forget about). Have a great day and don't forget that the wedding ceremony is more important than the surf, no matter how good those waves look  ;)

My contribution:

As a regular listener to Democracy Now! and a drippy lefty/liberal type to boot I definitely feel pretty lucky every day given how my life equates on paper with those less fortunate. So it's generally a given with me that I'm glad to be alive and that I try and make the most of every day. It's also a given that I'm desperately in love with my kick ass family and enjoy living in a nice house in London and all that stuff.

Nitty Gritty Smile Material:

I love this time of year. Phil's already said it and Miles backed him up; autumn, conkers, sunny days with a chill freshness to them...can't beat it in my view. We were picking up conkers like crazy in Battersea park last weekend. They're HUGE this year.

I'm off to Oslo tomorrow for a couple of days to play some quality 'veteran' punk rock for the hippest and most beautiful people in Norway's capital. That can't be bad at my age.

I'm going to be taking my Land Cam and the newly arrived Pentax Espio that a certain Mr Miller tipped me off about on eBay a week ago. £4.74 isn't a bad price for an awesome PnS.

I wrote a song today that I was so proud of, it made me smile for about 4 hours.

I made some hot cross buns yesterday that went down so well that Amy told me I should become a baker. When I explained to her the setup costs for a new business like that she said I should go busking with a bucket to raise money. When I said no-one would give me money just so I could setup a bakery, she said I should lie about what I was collecting for and instead say it was for starving children in Africa  ;D Amy is 6 years old and made the comment in all innocence. I took time to explain it to her, but it still made me laugh.

This evening I told her I was going to Norway tomorrow to 'play guitar'....she told me not to forget the bucket. Seriously.

I love my Les Paul. That makes me happy. So do all of my other guitars. Guitars are great.

I am extremely happy that my next job will be based in London. No long commutes or staying away from the family for the next month. That's good news.

Finally (and BOY could I go on)....I really do want to say that Filmwasters is fun. It makes me smile a lot (and not just when Francois writes 'toilet' and 'log' in consecutive sentences - see above). If it wasn't for you lot it would be nothing. So thanks very much.

Good things from yesterday and today!
Naked breasts as soon as I opened my eyes this morning.
Finding out that a friend I just gave a 100-year old camera (Ensignette) to hasn't put it down and is about to take some shots with it.
Booting a laptop with a new LCD and newly-overclocked CPU and not having to strain my eyes through 200 vertical lines (some flashing). Heh, geeky.
Being given a free Fuji 10MP P&S.
6 ebay purchases from China through the mail slot.
Flowers from my mother-in-law.
Leftover homemade pizza and Scottish shortbread from yesterday.
Hell, and I thought I was feeling bad! (and then I found some long-lost painkillers).

Recipe for feeling cool about yourself.

Drive up mountain in blustery weather and find suitable hedgerows.
Pick 1 kilo of blackthorn berries.
Drive to supermarket and buy 1 kilo of cane sugar and 1 litre of gin.
Mix carefully over a three month period.
Strain off and filter the red juice.
Enjoy with friends.

This is the first time I've got the timing right to pick ripe sloes before they burst in the autumn rains.  But I like sloe gin.

I know the feeling of getting a 4000 watt generator :)
Got one after the fabled ice storm of 1998...

Well, I overslept this morning... it sleeps so good when it rains!
It's at times like this that you appreciate not having a job...

And last night, I learned to play "Ça plane pour moi" by Plastic Bertrand on the guitar.
I also tried my guitar at full volume on my handmade amp... boy does it overdrive! Not too shabby for something that runs off a 9v battery :)
I also got some nice photo albums for 2$ each at the grocery store... surprisingly classy for the price.

Hoorah!

Just found a 6v LR44 battery in the garage and taped it into my Land Camera 320.

Despite being 1.5v too much (does that matter?  Physics was never a strong suit of mine!) my Polaroid is back in action!

Could anything be any better?  Well yes, the World Cup is on.  Roll on Saturday morning, a bacon butty and cheering the boys in green along!  Hoorah indeed.   ;D

AND... the monarchy is safely ensconced on the throne of the United Kingdom.

Feels like I've won the lottery of life!

Peace and out !

I totally did that the other day as I saw a green intact ball-thingy outside and wondered if it was from the chestnut tree. Squished it and *pop* it opened into three pieces. Made me smile for a good 10 minutes afterwards.

Strangely I came looking at the forum for the first time in a long time, feeling kind of lonely and I'm glad to find this thread today :)

I made some cyanotypes today. My paper weirdly has greasy marks that only showed up once wet and now are permanently there but oh well. They're still pretty in the middle where the picture is.

I got a new cookbook yesterday from the author, signed, in exchange for (okay, a digital) a superduper awesome photo I took of him at a demo he did a few months ago. And now it's on the front of his website with my name under it :)

Scarily, I'm slightly excited (though stressed) because I think I'm going to have a stall at photomonth's photofair next month :o

It is a fine thread indeed. One which I feel I can now contribute as my health is picking up again after a very poor few weeks or tests and what have you. I even managed a few little POP prints today on some old Kentmere POP paper I found knocking about the place. Gosh, I miss that stuff - although I do have a couple of 5x7 sheets left  ;). The sun has shone all day here , there's a tall ship in Stornoway harbour [about the 10th one this year] which looked so lovely I pointed an Ilford Sporti at it. Then had a fine stroll and post walk coffee/orange drizzle cake with an ex-work colleague, a session of Reiki then home to see my dear Eve cycling up the road on her borrowed 1961 race cycle ready for the L'Eroica [ http://youtu.be/KcTV9FBHOlM (http://youtu.be/KcTV9FBHOlM)  ]in a couple of weeks. I shall be taking a couple of old cameras too :-)
And, I get to read Filmwasters which is always a happy event.

I sway between the following

"Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery." Micawber

and

"Seeking happiness outside ourselves is like waiting for sunshine in a cave facing north."

I love the episode where you are having a discussion about developing your own film; somebody had developed his XP2 in B&W-chemicals and an excited Phil makes a remark about it: "...it is almost like bloody freestyle..." That comment among other things made me burst into laughter. There is something about the nice blend of characters and the mishmash of british accents and interesting topics that makes these podcasts one of a kind. Really looking forward to the next episode!

Vicky - I'm really glad your pics turned out ok.  Nice one.

Phil - I love getting hold of freshly peeled conkers (f'nar f'nar)

Miles - glad you are feeling better

Chalky - Congrats! Only the best people get married in Kernow (march 18th 2005, Strangles, Crackington Haven)

Francois - you really must tell me about AS toilet testing sometime

Harragan - great news - good luck with the show

J_Warden - only the coolest kids play the trumpet

Carlos - good luck in Sudan

Axia - a greenhouse, you are making me jealous

Ed - I'll shut up as soon as you start to learn some brevity ;)

Sandeha/ Phil - don't try your recipe until there's been frost though - you'll need much less sugar (or pop the sloes in the freezer first)

Chops - hillarious

Heather - good luck with the stall

I'm happy because I've got my website re-write mostly finished, I start my masters degree in a week or so and I start a new teaching job next week. The sun is shining again, and all my chillies are ripening.  It is Autumn and the light as getting to a point that inspires great photos.

Was made redundant yesterday and the wife told me she was leaving me over breakfast this morning.  I've just been advised that the bill for repairing the gear box on the car will be almost £1,000 and the vet has confirmed the test results for our cat and its definitely curtains for her.  The subsidence at the corner of the house looks to be getting worse by the day and my neighbour's teenage child has just abused me after I criticised him for parking his car across my driveway.  The gas bill's about to go up by 16% and my hernia is playing me up badly again.

Still, my almost 'brand new' FM3A arrives today and I've got a few rolls of Acros in the cupboard, so things don't look too bad after all.

Only the last bit is true by the way.....and I've been smiling for a few days knowing that was coming  ;D

Hey Graham,

The first bit is actually the "plot" for almost every country and western song ever written. Aside from having spent time in jail for a crime you didn't commit, being regarded as somewhat cowardly, being a drunk and/or gambler and your parents giving you a girl's name, I can't think of any missing elements.  :D

Cheered me up a heap......!!!

Yesterday was the last day for picking tomatoes at a local farm. And when I entered the kitchen this morning, it really dawned on me: I have a 50 lbs bushel of tomatoes in my kitchen... and it cost me only 5$ since I was one of their last customers of the season! So now I have to eat tomatoes at every chance I get until I have hives ;) ... or just blanch them and save some for all winter long.

And I'm excited today... tomorrow morning is a big rummage sale at the United Church... can't wait to see what I'll find there! I never buy a ton of stuff but it's almost always good stuff. Last year's highlight was a Manfrotto Lightstand. The year before a small electronic flash I use on toy cameras since it has high voltage sync. I also got over the years a Kodak carousel, Polaroid cameras and other stuff I can't even remember.

Francois - you really must tell me about AS toilet testing sometime
Well, they were saying the design has changed a lot over the years. It all started when California had the mandatory switch to low volume flush toilets. People started complaining that the reduced flow required multiple flushes to get everything through... so no real water saving there. So, American Standard started inquiring and found out that the regular 5cm flapper valve in the tank was not letting enough water through the system. So they enlarged it to 10cm and also enlarged to size of the drain hole in proportion. But now, they discovered that the aging population poses an unforeseen problem. Since more of them have, how do we say this... slower moving systems, it tends to produce more rigid poop. So they had to streamline the bowl's evacuation system to take the stuff whole while keeping a working odor trap. But big question is how to test it? Well they don't have a team of people who wait to get to work to let it all out like I first thought... instead, they use a substitute poo. It's made from some soy beans inserted into a couple of... condoms... tied at the end and filled to make a 4 inch long "sausage". They say it's flexible enough to mimic the real thing.

I don't know why this has fascinated me... But it's yet another piece of useless knowledge I add to my head :)

or make Chutney! that's how we preserve our end of season tomatoes, marrows and just about anything else.  Goes nicely with a lump of stilton, or maybe a slop of ripe roquefort and some Bath Olivers:) Now the thought of that REALLY makes me happy :)

Chutney! A life without chutney is a life half lived.... (seriously- spent a few years in Scandinavia where they eat jam with their cheese. Since we've moved to the U.K this year I've been trying to convince my Danish partner that jam is just a rubbish substitute for chutney and pickle. So far so almost successful).  A nice, acrid mature cheddar, oatcakes and chutney make me so ecstatic with happiness its not funny

Also- sloe gin. Just like developing film, everyone has their tricks. Agree on the freezer- means not waiting for the first frost or having to prick them, as if they defrost fast enough they go proper mushy. I've got my bushes marked for two weeks time. I like to put too little sugar in during the steeping, as if its too tart it can always be sweetened afterwards.

Toilet testing! What a job!

I just finished a two day workshop on analog photography, i taught (as a complete amateur) with a good friend of mine (another amateur), for the university's photo club. Everything went smoothly from picture taking to the final print. I'm really glad everything came out quite well, and every attendee seemed very pleased.

Is it late in the day for my usual habits or what!
Well, I've been to that rummage sale I was talking about. I've been there from 9:00 'till 1:00pm... scrounging and searching for hidden treasures (or just plain funky stuff). Had a ton of fun chatting with just every salesmen and cute girls that happened to say hello :)

Got me a funky belt buckle, a USB cable with the silver shielding on it (iMac style), a nice lava lamp (red blob)... the guy told me it was defective because it was too slow to start :)

But I know you all want to know the crunchy stuff, so I got a small Vivitar dual format plastic point & shoot that had a brand new film in it (though the story doesn't say how old it really is) and... drumroll please!

An Olympus Pen EES-2 in need of some TLC. The label on it said "4$ Old"... I tried it, the selenium cell still has some life left into it. The shutter works. Film advance is a bit sticky every second wind and the door is a bit hard to open. But apart from that, it's pretty good!

So, now I'm tired but my mind is going Whiiiii! :)

I also got a Bilboquet for those times when I need to concentrate on something pointless :)

That's what I call a great day!

Saw an Elmarit-R 28mm lens for sale - with a lens hood. Went to the shop and it turns out that the advert was wrong and lens hood wasn't with the lens. Boooooo!!  >:(

Anyway, the shop knocked off £50. Yay...!! ;D ......but the lens accepts series 7 filters, held in place by the lens hood........boooooo!! However, there is a traditional filter thread...Yay!!  ;D .......but it's 48mm and no-one's got any of that size in London. Boooooo!!  >:(  .......but my mate's got a UV filter in that size, 30 years old but brand new and only £2.99 (the price he'd marked it up at when he bought it years ago).

Very happy with the new lens but it it's always a bit "up and down" with second-hand gear....

Paul, you can get step-up rings that'll convert 48mm filter fitting to 52mm (the more standard size). I have one somewhere here for my Zenit camera (I think. Maybe it was for the Praktica I keep meaning to throw out because it's broken).

I'm happy today because I went on my first bookbinding class and it was fun and I still have dreams and aspirations of making my own book of cyanotypes hehe :)

Don't throw it out! You can use it to do some other cool things... like this lamp (http://www.diyphotography.net/use-your-old-camera-as-a-desk-lamp?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Diyphotographynet+%28DIYPhotography.net+-+Photography+and+Studio+Lighting%29)

As for me, today has started out great!
I still can't believe I have a good half frame camera on my desk! Much better than the half frame function of the Diana Mini :)
My local WalMart has also fixed their C-41 machine, so I'm going to get my roll back in a bit less than one hour :)

It's also sunny and bright outside... just cool enough for a long sleeve shirt... perfect!

Scored a cute little Olympus Trip 600 with a 28mm lens on the auction site over the weekend for 3 dollars, and it comes with 4 rolls of film!

Also going to pick up a new VW Jetta in Denver on Friday, which means I get to ride the Southwest Chief (train)  and take photos along the way up and back home.

Hey Heather, how the hell are you....!!

Thanks for the heads up regarding the step up rings. I'll Google them but I know SRB Griturn make them to order for "custom sizes" if all else fails. I can also mount the Lee System via a step up ring as well, which just adds to the happiness quotient  ;D.

This brought me feeling of happiness yesterday...

Mrs M and I were driving into town last night to visit the theatre and as usual we had the proverbial BMW driving a**hole tailgating us for a couple of miles, itching to overtake... eventually he took the risk and zoomed past us doing 60mph in a 30mph zone. After I muttered something about his bad driving there was another car behind us who suddenly overtook us with lots of pretty blue flashing lights... it was an unmarked Police car! He then proceeded to chase after and pull over the offending driver... there is justice after all!!

I had a Korean girl and a German guy (friends of a friend) sleeping in my flat in London as they had nowhere to stay due to a last minute problem. The girl saw my old cameras laying around and was super excited about Polaroid ("all girls love polaroid"). The guy is 20 and didn't even know what Polaroid was.:)

She used my SLR 680, got tons of funny and curious looks from people on the street, and even the OOF/blurry shots seem to have a charming quality to them. I have had some 600 film packs on the fridge forever and now I'm excited about shooting them again. I may even give Impossible a second chance.

She kept all the pictures (I scanned them) and now she's going to have some great memories of her trip to London. Polaroid is awesome.

Today was an excellent day!
I just love it when neighbors renovate and get rid of stuff I can pick-up and re-use.
Today, two ladies who were doing yardwork for a newcomer gave me some nice Hostas we immediatly planted in the front yard. Another neighbor threw out 3 half sheets of gypsum board I need for my bathroom. And another one gave me some louvered doors I need to close down a closet...

I think nothing makes a better day than free stuff you actually need :)

It wasn't until I read this thread that I realised how much I needed it!

This is the first time I've visited Filmwasters for many weeks, because my commitment (or lack of it) to photography and various projects is something I've been sticking my head in the sand about for quite some time. It's not the only thing I've been sticking my head in the sand about, either, as I feel as if I've lost my way in many aspects of my life. However, here are some of the (many) things I realise I can be grateful for:

• I have a kind, thoughtful husband, who spontaneously suggests things like getting a train to a town along the coast, just to have lunch in a nice restaurant.

• We live within five minutes' walk of the best cinema in the country, and last night went there to see Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy. They also serve superb home-made cake.

• I can run non-stop for 30 minutes. Something I'd never have dreamed of three months ago.

• I have a beautiful greyhound who makes me laugh every day. He's very anxious, but the progress he's made in the past year or so makes me very proud of him.

• Through my involvement with greyhound rescue, I have made a lovely new friend.

• Brighton & Hove Albion are playing the best football I've seen in 17-odd years of following them. Not only that, but they're playing it in a brand, spanking new stadium which serves the best pies I've ever tasted (I swear they must be laced with crack cocaine, they're so addictive).

• I have a job that is only part-time, but pays well enough for me to get by.

• I live in a vibrant city by the sea.

Hopefully, in a few hours from now, I will be able to add to this that Mark Cavendish - who I consider to be the greatest British athlete at the moment - has won the Road World Championship.

Just realised that rather a lot of my things to be happy about are food-related, which speaks volumes!  :)

I think that speaks volumes...

I thought about putting it in the weekend thread, but it really belongs in the happiness thread.

Aside from my perpetual gratitude for my wife and kid, that I have a job, a place to live with heat, food on the table, and a little dog who believes she's a hot water bottle, I can officially say I'm back into photography.

Struggled through spooling my first roll of 120 ever a couple of nights ago (as you may notice, first roll of film I've put on a reel in 21 years, I think), brewed my first batch of Caffenol C yesterday, and did a little jig in my bathroom about a half-hour later:

Went to a local camera fair last weekend and bought me a brand spanking new Zero 2000 so I can now have one for B&W and one for colour! Best bit was it cost me a third of what it would have cost at Silverprint... am very, very happy! :D :D

Forgot to add that is the DELUXE version complete with the hang round your neck exposure scale!

It feels like Summer is back! So no complaint there :)
Yesterday, I went to pick apples at the orchard. It was sunny and warm. Since the apples were a bit on the sour side of things, I decided to wait a bit and came back instead with strangely shaped squash instead. They have that Gonzo the Great look so it made me smile.

I also brought the camera and shot almost an entire roll of film. On the way back, I stopped at a garage sale that was closing down. They were so tired they were giving most of their stuff away. So I got a small Nikon P&S and an accordion for 3$... and that's not counting the rest of the stuff I got for free :)

Free stuff always makes me smile :)
And now, I can learn to play yet another instrument (yay!)

Cheap film... what better way to start your day!
So, yeah, at the grocery store, I nabbed 20 rolls of slightly expired (last April) house brand (made by Fuji) 400 iso film... for only 13$ tax in...
Not that I really needed it... but I just couldn't stand looking at them in their worn off boxes... so lonely in a wire basket... I calculated I paid only 10% of their original price!

Life really is good :)

Lots of reasons to feel happy, as others have already said - it's such a lovely time of year.

I think the Evening Primrose Oil I've been taking is making me slightly manic though! Woo hoo.

Francois - if you lived where I live, you'd certainly be enjoying the smell right now. It's a beautiful conservation area, with a sewage treatment works just down the road, and when we have intense heat like we have had the last few days, it creates a distinctive and pervading smell of fermenting shite.

Phil - me and the booze do not get on. I'm an over-sensitive little flower. Though I shall be making a few bottles of my infamous sloe gin again this year, if you're interested. One of the nicer benefits of living where I do.

Just got given a Coronet Midget with two spools (http://www.submin.com/16mm/collection/coronet/index.htm (http://www.submin.com/16mm/collection/coronet/index.htm)) - the red and black model.

Cleaned up the lens and viewfinder and, at least in theory, it works like a charm.  Just cut some backing paper, so at some point will have to cut some film for it.  I mean, you can't not when you have one !!   ;D

Samantha,

You and I have the same issue regarding water treatment plants. We have one about 1/4 of a mile away across the fields. 99.9% of the time you'd never even guess it was there however, this weekend, there has been a pong like a tramp's sock round these parts and no mistake  :o

Sloe Gin? It's years since I've seen any in Tesco let alone contemplated making my own. Had a go at home brew beer (stout, actually) many moons ago. Not good. Very messy and totally undrinkable. Don't think adding half a bottle of brandy helped but I used to like chemistry at school.

Happiness is...........finding two bottles of very nice Merlot on special offer at Sainsbury's for £10. That's me sorted for a couple of nights  ::)

Fedx is on the way to my house with an old Nikon N90s.
Very nice camera! I have one (F90x) and it is a joy to use. It came as a metering lenscap on a zoom lens I bought to replace the one I wore out!

The only thing is they manufactured it with rubberized paint on the back which became tacky. Since almost nothing would stick to it without making a big mess, I decided to use some cling wrap. That fixed the problem and looks pretty darn good :)
Title: Re: Official: Happiness Thread
Post by: astrobeck on October 06, 2011, 09:56:57 PM
Just unwrapped the camera and put batteries in it.  Seems to work fine.
The back is indeed a bit of a mess, so was wondering how to make it nicer.

Might give the cling wrap bit a try.   :)

Also going to see if the spray-on bed-liner (like in the back of my truck) people can do anything with it.
Title: Re: Official: Happiness Thread
Post by: Francois on October 06, 2011, 10:40:02 PM
I tried using rubber restorer on a part of it... it made the plastic melt!
I called Nikon on this one and the tech people told me there is no known way to remove the tackiness. They even told me that using any chemical will just make things worse. Glues won't stick to it. Paint won't either.

Since I didn't want to sand it (and ruin the reminder logos that are printed on), I opted for the cling wrap. My recommendation: use cling wrap. It's cheap, sticks good to the tacky plastic and costs nothing to replace if it gets damaged.

It's just a bit of a drag to cut but it's still not too bad.

Not that I don't regret missing out on such nice weather to go on a photo trip, but the shed really needed it!
Thing is I used it as a temporary storage for everything that won't go in the house. I ended up dumping tons of broken stuff that needs fixing directly in the bin. I also recycled a ton of books I no longer have any interest in... lets just say the place is much nicer :)

I'm pretty happy that I found out a lab I heard of advertising is actually back in my hometown and they'll do flatrate $10 international postage and didn't freak out at me saying I'd send them 5 rolls of film at that price. Unfortunately I still need to shoot (or find? I thought I had some undeveloped around...) that much film but it's nice to know there's some place out there I can use. Not sure how VAT/Duty will be but I'm sure it'll still be competitively priced with UK labs.

I had an afternoon with Robin Gillanders at a 'Meet the Expert' session at Kirkcaldy Art Gallery. (Scottish portrait photographer par excellence). He brought a DLSR tethered to a Mac and lighting to demonstrated some portrait skills. This was interesting enough and I learnt a lot from a few wise words. Better...he had a 10x8 Deardoff and he kindly let me have a play with movements etc. He is a film user for all his personal work. You could see some of the others scratching their heads as he extolled the virtues of film  :) I just stood there agreeing with everything he said.
He had a set of 10 portraits taken with the Deardoff on FP4, printed on Ilford FBWT paper which were stunning.

Francois - good to hear there's another Zep fan on FW.

I'm particularly happy today as I've just learned that Sigur Ros (Google them if you are unfamiliar and check out "Heima" on YouTube) are about to release a double "live" CD, BluRay / CD and photos package on 07/11. They're also recording a new studio album and are planning to tour in 2012.

The weird thing is that I can't understand a bloody word they're on about as my Icelandic isn't up to much.

I suppose it's a bit like my penchant for the band "Rammstein". All their tracks are sung in German and I have only the most basic grasp of that language.

Even more weird is a band called "Tool". On one of their albums, there's a quant little ditty called "Der Eier Von Satan" (Satan's Egg) which, when translated, turns out to be nothing more than a recital of the singer's grandmother's recipe for a cookie.....awwwww, bless  ;D

Well, music wise, I do have a funny story to tell.
Yesterday, I had to get a few things at the Dollar Store (the big chain is called Dollarama here in Canada... just in case fellow Filmwasters are interested).

They always a small rack of CD's. Usually it's mostly classical or vintage pop compilations. But there's a cover that grabs my attention. It's not like their usual stuff. I just leaned to take a closer look and it was Guns 'n Roses' Chinese Democracy album :)

Somehow, it made me smile all day... when your record sales are so low that your album ends up at the Dollar Store with a 2$ logo on it...  :)

How is it $2 when it is in the Dollar store?  Our Pound Shops are "everything for a £"

Well, the company says they had to raise prices on some products to keep up with inflation. Most of their stuff is still 1$ (which is a good thing since a ton of my photo lab stuff comes from there) but there ate some items at 1.25$, 1.50$ and 2$.

They also have stuff at 2/1$... like facecloth.

Well, much as I'm not a big fan of "Slash", GnR is zip without him. Apparently, the current incarnation got booed off stage at the O2 in London when they toured that album. It must have been hilarious to see a dick like Axl Rose getting the slow handclap. I suspect the copies of "Chinese Democracy" were over-priced by at least $1.99  ;D

I must try Leon's trick of asking the price next time I go to a £ shop. The one in the town where I live is staffed by some very odd characters....

Recieved this from ebay:

99 cents.  Box, instructions, lens cap - all there.   I know it was used at least once as there was a Kodak spool on the feed side.

I'm going to find out whether or not my bulk roll of 46mm film is still any good soon enough (was fine two years ago, but accidentally left in the garage this summer because I misplaced it after moving- urrgh).

Has anybody had experience with this fine toy?
Title: Re: Official: Happiness Thread

I've never even seen one... so no experience on it to speak of.

But yesterday, I volunteered at a book sale (I have to work today too).
One of the good things is you get to handle all the books, so you can choose what you like as you go. I got a nice big book on the history of cameras... not something common. I also got a nice Kodak publication.
Paid only 4.50$ for both so it was well worth the trouble of pushing books around.

Sadly, we have a book on Boy George & Culture Club which I'm pretty sure I'll have a hard time selling and will probably have to pack at the end of the day  ;D

Sadly, indeed - you might have to introduce some money into the deal to offload that onto someone... ;)

Happy day for me, too. My de-cluttering / refocusing of kit moved forwards a step. I got my Ricoh GR1s in place of my old F2S, my "knob" arrived from Wista in Japan - so the field camera is now all ship-shape and Tokyo fashion - and I got a Linhof Universal Viewer (see photos). It'll do views for lenses from 75mm to 360mm. I'd never heard of one before but my mate (with whom I did a trade for this item) reckons it'll save me a load of time as I can just wander around taking a look through this viewer and I only need set up the camera when I like the look of what I see. Seems logical.

Ebay has just been unloading deals lately...to think I was kind of getting disenchanted by the prices going up and up lately...
Foldex 20 with Flash - $6 buy it now!  Even included four flash bulbs.  I actually got it for the flash because I already have a Foldex 30 which has a very sharp Steinheil Cassar lens.  I might even harvest the bellows from this one if the 30 gets any more leaks.

Imperial Delta with original box, instructions, warranty card, and mail-order envelope.  Never been used, still had wrist strap and original plastic spool inside.  I almost feel bad for wanting to take it out and use it.  I already had a Delta and matching flash - but it disappeared somewhere a few years ago.  These actually produce rather good results for a toy camera.  The older Satellite models give pronounced edge blur, but these are relatively "normal" by comparison.  One of the last gasps of 127 in the instamatic era.  Is it bad to love a camera because it just looks cool?  ;D

To add to the happiness these both were delivered on the same day along with a new developing reel. Oh joy.

I called in to Arundel Photographica (http://www.arundel-photographica.co.uk/) and snagged a wonderful old brass 7"/ 171mm enlarger lens with f5.6-f32 apertures for £5! It is a bit grubby, but no fungus (those marks on pic are dust/ water - I've cleaned them off now.

I think it's destined for a lens board and use on my 5x4. Maybe low-light portraits?  No shutter, so that could be an issue.  OR, I could just use it on the enlarger.

I've no idea who made it there's no name on the lens at all ... it's an anastigmat so could be a Wray, or a Dalmeyer? Not sure.

Leon: that lens begs to be put on the camera! On the enlarger, you probably wouldn't get as much quality as with modern optics (hence sharp grain). But on the camera with direct positive paper... or something like that. Or with a very dark ND filter to lengthen the exposures... or with a Packard shutter... or a handmade shutter...

Ann: you lucky to have someone to go to NYC with :) I could sing you both Sinatra's version of New York New York but I'm afraid I'd make people envious of my simply awesome voice (then again, probably not ;) )

Agreed, that's a camera job.  You could hang a Packard on the front ...

You can get a reliable 1/40 with them, and it's not difficult to add a flash contact.

Today, I pretty much cranked the volume on the sound system... something I hadn't done in a ling time!

My mom brought me back some CD's from a garage sale. I've got some Joe Jackson, Bauhaus, Dylan, Nina Simone, Les Rita Mitsoukos... and some KISS... best played with the adequate volume... I think a real 50 watts per channel should be plenty  ;D

.............happy and frustrated in equal measure that we're not going to Thailand and Cambodia on 07/11 and that we won't be adding to the burden of the poor people out there who are going to have to try to sort out their country after the flood water has receded. The devastation will be phenomenal and almost 400 people have been killed to-date. We will go there one day - but to see these countries at their best - not in the midst of a crisis.

We've planned, paid for and looked forward to this, our one annual holiday, since March and it's beyond frustrating to have it ruined and the rug pulled with just a week to go. However, rather that than have to deal with food and clean water shortages and - potentially - becoming stranded or suffering some water-borne illness.

How come is it that I'm always happy to bring more gear in?
Well, this morning was another great score!

An old Argus STL 1000 mechanical camera with an M42 mount and a Metz 45 CT-1 reporter flash (potato masher)...

I need to clean out quite a few contacts and they both require a lot of cleaning... but at 3$ for both, I won't complain about it  ;D

That looks like a nice Argus - what lens has it got?

I received some equipment of my own today:

I've always wanted one, but it's not been at the top of my list.

The lens is a Cosinon 50mm f/1.8
Nothing very special in itself. Just extra cruddy. But on the upside, focus is very smooth on it. I also have a few lenses for it so I'm in business :)

It turns out that my local uni has won some Welsh Arts Council (ACW) and European Social Fund (ESF) research money for art engagement projects for kids who are Not in Education Employment or Training (NEET).  They are now looking for projects to fund.  Purely coincidental that I shared a report on my own work on using visual art with NEETs with one of the project managers just a few weeks ago.

The next stage is a general meeting on Dec 6th to elaborate and refine project proposals from a range of arts organisations and youth service providers. I could continue as a practitioner 'on the ground' but SMU are more interested in putting me forward as their researcher ... which would mean part time employment (2 or 3 days a week for one year, at uni rates) and most likely registering for an MPhil (funded).

Far too many acronyms, but all good.   :)

hey Sandeha - welcome to the world of HEIROPGST! (Higher Education Institutions Relying On Post-Grad Student Teachers). They'll work you hard, and give you none of the benefits :)

Leon, I got close to something similar last year when they offered me a research post on a NEET project, only for the funding to be cancelled in the post-election panic.  I'm guessing this time it will work out as they secured the dosh first.  [fingers crossed smiley]

Repaired a Ricohflex VI.   Bought off of ebay for $10.  Of course it came to me with completely frozen focus, and a stuck shutter, which the seller obviously didn't bother to describe. They also spent two weeks not shipping it out.  ::)

But it works now!  Gotta test it out when I have some free time.

@Phil

Nice one!

The thingy on the top is the same as mine. It's a telescopic effort that allows you to see what different focal lengths look like and they are worth a small fortune on their own. No idea what you paid for the whole lot but there were some of the viewfinders going for £200+

Phil - tis a thing of beauty.  Now all you need to do is take a trip over to Kent and show it to me.  In the mean time I'll work on my sleight of hand and hypnotism to whip away the Linhof and convince you my Shen is yours.

This is a very fine piece of kit!
I don't know if I can get my Crown Graphic to look half as good!

From memory, on those the focusing cams are stored in the folding bed and not in the little cubbyhole under the finder like on the Graphic.

Title: Re: Official: Happiness Thread
Post by: LT on December 08, 2011, 10:13:41 AM
just take your time Phil. Spend a few weeks just playing with the camera, learning how all the movements work.  Have it set up on a low tripod in the lounge, and while Corrie/enders/other inane soap is on, mess about with focusing it, using the movements, opening and closing, using the RF etc.  It will come eventually. That's how I get used to using new cameras.

Seriously though, if you want to pop over in the new year, let me know.  I'm around and free all week until the week starting the 16th. We can go out and take some pics, try out the workings etc. Let me know.  If any other LF users want to come along, they would be welcome.  We could have a bit of a LF workshop going on!

Found out my local Walgreens (newly built) will process 35mm film in under an hour, and because there isn't a big demand for that (at least today) it's actually about a half-hour. From the first test roll through my $1 Canon AE-1 Program on full auto.

Film is expired Kodak Gold 400 my wife found at a garage sale for $2 for four rolls. Developed and scanned for under $6. I'm down around $0.30 a shot. :)

May be some of the things that I will mention do not sound very positive but all in all the overall message is that after almost two months I am regularly shooting again  ;D

I retrieved my equipment from customs three weeks ago (It took me almost two months);  all my cameras and film were there (not very smart).

The house we have rented had two fridges! So now I have a "dedicated" fridge at home, all my instant film fits in  ;D

After almost two months in a Hooot warehouse, film still works, even the type 108 10 years expired film.

My computer died  :o

My scanner died  :o

I have a viral infection in me left eye (of course the one I use for focusing)  :'(

I got my Photo Permit (valid for 1 year)  ;)

Two days ago I was stopped by the secret police  8) when I was using my POlaroid, I did not notice the airport was on the background, luckily, and after showing my Polaroids, I was allowed to keep my camera and polaroids.

Khartoum people are very friendly when it comes to be taken pictures. The city itself is quite.... quite... quite... not very photogenic to say the least, but its people are. Khartoum is dusty, dusty and dusty!!

Right now I am shooting with the Polaroid and the Rolleiflex, the Polaroid of course I can see them, not the Rollei, its a strange feeling not being able to watch the result of what you are doing, but on the other hand it has its own attractiveness. The Polaroid is quite a sensation, usually I shoot one and give one to the person, everybody happy  ;D although sometimes too many people wants a polaroid. Polaroid is just great!

Well, that's it. Oh yes, I am missing participating in the Forum. Now I have a little more time, I will peek time to time.

Carlos.

Just shot the first two piccies on a homemade 13x18cm I finished building this evening. looks good. No light leaks, and exposure and dev seem spot on using cheapo TMAX 100 expired in '89.

These are the first large format film I've shot and developed. The whole process is so easy I'm wondering why I never did it before.

You can always use those Halloween blacklights... they're mostly UV light.

Or you can drive to one of those public bathrooms where they have blacklights installed to drive off junkies... though you'd look a bit strange going to a gaz station or a doughnut place with your printing frame loaded :)
