I'm not sure if this has been posted here 'officially' or just referred to obliquely, but there is a planned FW gathering in London on Sunday July 10th. The focus this time will be on gallery/exhibition hopping, but if Thom is avaliable I'm sure he'll be more than happy to give us a tour of the London Lomo store :-)
It's up to the group as to where we go, but I have 4 recommendations to kick things off:

I'm going to go to the Vivian Maier show with Mauricio (Sapata) because we have bought tickets already. They cost £3.50 and are available from the link above. I'm not sure if time slots are allocated, but since it's the only show on the list above that you need to buy tickets for we'll need to work out who's going to it from the group and then plan the day around it.
I could write more, but I won't. Let the discussions commence. Have I missed any must-see exhibitions? Do any of the above sound rubbish?

Just to add some information, I was told to bring a print from the email/receipt confirming that I bought the tickets, they will then be exchanged for the physical tickets at the door... they haven't mentioned anything about the time...;)

I'm there, will book tickets on next pay day. It will be my third visit to the london street photography exhibition, I just can't get enough. Wouldn't wanna miss vivian meyer!
As for the lomo stores... Well, they don't hand out personalised metal cards on purchase of one of those new tinned fish cameras so may have to give it a miss :-p

There is another (free) exhibition at the Tate Modern which I think is worth seeing.

Also level 3 has a small Diane Arbus exhibition which is good!

Nice I saw some of her work at the old Photographers' gallery a few years ago and really liked it. This show looks really promising.
OK, so it looks like a trip to the Tate Modern is absolutely in order then. Let's put that on the "Definitely" list.

I'd like to go to the Vivian Maier and I'm up for Tate Modern too. I like Southbank... and the German Gymnasium is near King's Cross which makes it easy for me to get to on a weekend.

Hi all, I am new to film wasters met Suzi a few weeks ago on a lilth printing course at Zoom in & she told me all about the forum. First time I have had the chance to log in & mooch about since signing up, DELIGHTED I chose tonight. I would love to join you on the photography crawl - puts some names to faces & all that ;) (new to internet forums) I have seen the Exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery and can recommend it. I live in Bow so the gallery would be handy place for me to meet. As regards to times I am volunteering for the festival so could have get info on times and stuff. First day tomorrow so I could let you all know tomorrow evening. Been waiting months to see the Vivian Mahier Exhibition. ::)

Ok just received an email from them, Vivian Mahier exhibition times are
Monday: Closed
Tuesday: 10am – 6pm
Wednesday: 10am – 6pm
Thursday: 10am – 8pm
Friday: 10am – 4pm
Saturday: 11am – 4pm
Sunday: 11am – 4pm
Limited edition post card prints of Vivian Mahier work will be available also, they are the only prints of Vivian Maier in circulation at the moment - apparently :-*

Okay folks, only a day or so to go...... Where are we meeting and at what time?
For those of us off to the Vivian Maier exhibition at the German Gym (looks like the most popular), is it worth starting there and meeting up with the rest at another venue? Just a suggestion........ ???
I'm out (at a BBQ) most of Saturday - weather permitting, so I won't have much time to check before setting off early on Sunday. Nigel, Leon and Ed have my mobile number, so a text would be much appreciated. We're happy to meet anywhere the majority votes for.

Hi Guys I've also bought a Vivian Mayer ticket - although it's slightly weird that they don't even ask you what day you want to go, never mind the time.
It opens at 11am is that OK for everyone?

For those that know St Pancras / Kings Cross the German Gymnasium is a great looking building with a curved roof on the road between the two stations. It's two minutes walk from Kings Cross tube.
I'll probably get there a little early and grab a coffee in St Pancras somewhere. ....pause .... I've just checked the trains and mine arrive at 10.06 or 11.06, so it looks like I'll be there from 10.06. If you want to meet up send me a PM and I'll give you my number.

Yep, let's start with Vivian Maier and go on from there; please feel free (Nigel and others) to think about a sensible itinerary which involves as little doubling-back on Tubes as poss. An 11AM should be fine, but don't wait for me if a critical mass has arrived and is keen to get started. I'm coming under a certain amount pressure 'on the domestic front' to make my day out as short as possible, but I should be good to hang around until something like 4PM.
Leon's had to cancel unfortunately, but last I heard, Damion was trying to get down from The Midlands to join us....however, it's all been a bit quiet in the last few days so I need to check what he's decided to do.

Hey guys,
There are 5 exhibitions around the Kings Cross area. One is directly opp the German Gymnasium as you are heading out of the station, One in the British Library of east end market life in the forties, a small gallery a little further up the street mimmi weiz, if I remember correctly and another called Orange Dot on Tavistock Place of the student finalists but not sure if that will be open on Sun.
As for ticket holders your name is in the system at the exhibition, the LSPF has tried to keep things as flexible as possible in that regard. A steady flow of people have been at the exhibition this week & I must say the pictures look amazing there is also a 40 min video of the 8 films that Vivian Maier shot, well worth £3.50 ::)

I'm going to be heading off around 5PM at the latest so don'tr want to bite off more than is chewable. Am therefore thinking of the following itinerary:

2. Whitechapel Gallery
3. Tate Modern for (all hail, all bow, we're not worthy) Simon Norfolk.
...with breaks for beer, coffee and cakes and more beer probably.

In the end, 8 of us met up at the German Gym to go and see the Vivian Maier exhibition. The gym is a great space, but the big windows caused reflection problems for most of us when looking at the framed prints. We then said good by to Mauricio (Sapata) and headed east to Whitechapel for the "This is Whitechapel" exhibition of photos by Ian Berry, a UK member of Magnum (http://events.magnumphotos.com/exhibition/whitechapel). Much as I loved the Maier images, Ian Berry's work was enormously powerful and packed a huge punch. No wasted space, no potentially revisionist back-story, no outsider romance...just fantastic images. But hey, that's just my perspective. I loved both exhibitions.

Miller bailed at Liverpool Street and headed home before we headed over to the Tate Modern to catch the last breath of the Simon Norfolk/John Burke exhibition - today was its last day. Burke was in Afghanistan in the 1870's and took a fantastic selection of wet plate collodion images of the war there. Norfolk went back and photographed some of the same locations and subjects as Burke in 2010 and 2011. The big shock for me was to see Simon Norfolk shooting digitally (I'm trying to find out if that's a permanent switch for him - from 8x10 slide film), but despite that fact pretty much ruining my day, the exhibition itself was amazing with outstanding work from both photographers. The following video was being shown in the first room and I think it bears embedding here. I know Simon Norfolk is shooting digitally, but Burke's work isn't and the albumen prints we saw in the two portfolios on display in the gallery were breathtaking.

Thanks to Nigel, Thil (x2), Paul (x2), Damion, Miller & Mauricio for coming out and making the gallery crawl a really fun thing to do. We're thinking the Hungarian Photography thing at the Royal Academy should be next on the list, so take a look at that and we'll sort out a visit sometime before it closes.

Ed, thanks so much for posting that video. I don't think I'd ever paid much attention to Norfolk before, mostly because I can find war photography often very similar and obviously depressingly sad.
But I loved Burkes work and I really got alot from hearing Norfolk talk, seems like a very genuine man.
His previous work on film is stunning and I also think it's a shame he's moved to digital, it's still excellent because it's his vision. But if he's trying to use beauty as the tool to get us in to understanding the situation then the film wins every time.

Vivky, Simon Norfolk is a photographer I feel very strongly about and can bore for England about him, so I'm wary about getting started, but he's definitely a man with a lot to say and listening to him talking about his work is quite a revelation. I'd long admired his work - the Photographers' Gallery used to have a lot of his prints for sale in their print room so I got spoiled being able to see his work in person most weeks - but hearing a Podcast of his lecture at HOST Gallery in 2007 gave me a far deeper understanding of his motivations, his politics, his craft etc.
Seeing as how you've expressed an interest I would recommend you spend an hour or so in the great man's company. The lecture doesn't seem to be available on the HOST gallery site anymore (you could email them to find out if they can put it back), but there is an iTunes link which may work for you.

If all else fails I probably have the audio or video files on a hard drive somewhere, but over and above all of this you should take a look at his first Afghanistan book, "Chromotopia", which is simply stunning.

Well... strangely I think that heading in Afghanistan these days with an 8x10 is probably one of the best ways to definitely shorten your lifespan!
So knowing that he shot this on digi is not surprising...

Hi Suzi.
We were talking about this yesterday. I posted the link in another thread and several people have already expressed a wish to pay a visit to the RA. Ed suggested it might be the starting point for another "Gallery Crawl". I'll do my best to attend as yesterday's event was really good fun - even though my poor old knees almost gave up on me (not an exhausting day - I just have worn out knees...!)
I can't remember a time when there were so many good exhibitions on in London - or maybe I just wasn't looking. It's started to change my mind about the place.........well, almost, as I'm always glad to get home after a day's work!! ;)

It looks like the Ian Perry exhibition is one not to be missed Ed...
I thought the Vivian Maier exhibition was really great, although as I said before I was expecting
more prints considering the volume of work she apparently produced. The gym as you
said is a nice place and I love the building next to the exhibition! it's amazing on how the whole area (King's Cross) it's been transformed... I was going to a totally different direction when I left the tube (thank to Miller he spotted on the street!).
I was a great fun meeting you guys there and I hope we can do that again very soon...

Great photography and even better company, I really enjoyed it. We all had to get back, unfortunately, or I could quite easily have settled in a riverside hostelry for the evening. It would be great to do it again before the weather goes and possibly make it an afternoon / evening event? Maybe we could even get that curry in!
Ed - thanks for posting the Simon Norfolk video, I haven't had time to watch it yet, but I will. I have to admit apart from knowing he was a photographer I really knew nothing about him, but he's certainly one on my list to find out more about.

Hey Thil! Those are great shots. Also, you take the prize for the best "Big Reflective Ball" photo and a final note that your photo of said ball is even better than mine (taken with a camera phone). Just goes to show that it's worth buying a Leica any day ;D

Mrs LD and I visited Chris Beetles' Gallery to see the Steve McCurry exhibition last weekend. Okay, most of us know who he is and have already seen a lot of his work but the photos are breathtaking - even with repeated viewings - and well worth popping in if you're anywhere near Piccadilly in London.
The exhibition runs (officially) from 7-24 September, but many of the photos were already on the floor, displayed ready for hanging:
