Our sixth video podcast sees us giving in and upgrading to Vimeo+. Sweet! In this show we have Damion's report from Focus on Imaging 2011, Leon & Ed take a look at Ilford Harman's Direct Positive Paper and - after a short commercial break courtesy of François Laverdure - we close out with a look at Sean Rohde's excellent recent exhibtition, "Expired".

I really want to try the harman positive paper but it seems a bit costly, especially as it looks like it will take a while to work it out.

Excellent. I must say that HDP paper is a bit tricky - but it does work. I've even seen it used for lith somewhere. Clearly some people are having great success with Direct Pos Paper....I just enjoyed watching Leon be defeated by something photography-related for once.

interesting with the positive paper! like what kind of iso where you handling it? I've read that most (negative) papers are around iso 6. but that is just considering light from the sun and not artificial light, as it's much less sensetive to the warmer tones I think.
but can you use any paper developer for it? I'd be interested to try it out~
about the expired show: tastefull hanging! fun with the cameras being there for viewing and a relaxing couch in the room.
and the "commercial" was great. more of that :D

jojonas - the DPP paper is about iso 3. The problem is getting on top of the weird reciprocity characteristics. I can never quite get it right. too much faffing about for my tastes. You can use any paper developer with it.

The other thing to look out for is something I missed the first time round, but which Leon spotted straightaway. In the speeded section when he's swooshing the dev around in the orbital developer, take a look at what Amy's doing just behind him; she's rotating her head in time with his dev action. Very, very funny. Also, I thought Leon handled the way my family got in the way very commendably (I edited most of it out...there was a lot more), but then he did used to be a social worker, so he's used to a bit of chaos ;)

Loved the benny hill bit, you even managed to get a blonde running around in the background.
Seriously now, the HD paper looks to be tricky but given the consistancy of the small number of portraits on it that I have seen from the focus exhibition it looks like you can get decent results. I'm surprised that Ilford\Harman haven't given more information on how to use it. After all it is in their interest that people continue to buy this paper.
However the thought of trying to work out what I need to do to correct it if it turn out black, more or less exposure would drive me crazy. I have enough problems trying to work out how to correct the meter reading when exposing against a white or black background.
Francois I'll place an order for the lens just as soon as my cut from tranfering funds for assisting some poor unfortunate goverment offical arrive from nigera\libya or america. Helping so many at present.

I've always loved infomercials... the crappier the product and the stupider the claims, the more fun they seem to be :)
However the thought of trying to work out what I need to do to correct it if it turn out black, more or less exposure would drive me crazy. I have enough problems trying to work out how to correct the meter reading when exposing against a white or black background.
I've never tried it but would be tempted to simply say "do what you wouldn't normally do" :)
Since it's a positive medium, you have to use reverse thinking. If "white" light hits a regular negative, it turns black. So, if the same "white" light hits a non negative emulsion (like the Ilford Direct Positive), it becomes white. Just like slide film and Polaroid.
So, using the same thought process, if the print is mostly black you need to add more "white light" (exactly the opposite of regular darkroom work). And if the print is white, you have to give it less exposure.

I tried some positive paper a few years back in a pinhole camera just for kicks and had a miserable time with it as well. It wasn't ilford stuff though, I can't remember the brand, mostly because I never ever intended to try that again :)
Great episode, loved the commercial and the peak at the expired gallery as well.

I've tried the Efke positive paper in pinhole as well. I rate it as a 2 iso and it works okay. Not one of my favorites though as it always looks dull.
I always enjoy the music selected for the p-casts too!

What you are saying it that Harman positive paper can give great results but it's as capricious in it's manipulation as impossible film in a sense ?

Johann; funny you should mention the somewhat similar territory that Diect Positive Paper and the Impossible Project film inhabit...and that they should crop up as subjects of 2 consecutive podcasts. It was unintentional, believe me, but the similarity wasn't lost on me as I edited the most recent episode. Next time we'll have to find something which works perfectly :)

Do a couple styles of filmwaster shirts Ed. one colour, one side. maybe same basic design; one positive, one negative. black on white shirt and white on black shirt?
edit: hopefully the positive shirt wont have the same effect as the positive paper on the podcast! :D

And I liked Sean's Three Mile Pilot song choice. Love Pinback and other Rob Crow bands, but I had never heard Three Mile Pilot before this.
Bummer about the positive paper, too.
