Photographica looms again (where did the year go?)
Anyone up for it? My cash is burning a hole in my pocket already.
http://www.nanites.co.uk/pccgb/Photographica%2001.htm (http://www.nanites.co.uk/pccgb/Photographica%2001.htm)
-
Yep, I'm going to be there. Maybe we could research a cafe locally so we could meet up for a bit of breakie beforehand?
-
ill be there - hopefully with a lot more cash.
why dont they do this more often, then once a year?!
-
not been in one of these events in centuries.... maybe time to go again... maybe
-
Tempted.. very temped.. uh oh..
-
i am so envious! Suzi and Nigel..this would be cool if you guys could meet up before I come over in November ..then we could all get together then also!
-
Looks like fun & it would greatly amuse me to meet some fellow wasters (wastrels?). I'll see if I can make it down from Yorkshire...
-
Barring un-get-out-of-able family commitments which may yet appear, I'll be there for sure.
-
Will do my best. Am beyond penniless, but might rob a bank prior to the 22nd.
-
I'll probably be there. It'll be great to meet up and the idea of breakfast always goes down well!
-

I've put it in my diary.. my bank manager won't be happy..
Have you booked dates for November yet? I'm hoping to nip over to Paris Photo during November (9-13th) http://www.parisphoto.fr/?lg=en (http://www.parisphoto.fr/?lg=en) ;D
-
Unless something gets in between I will also go. I have missed ALL of them since I moved to London, though!
That Parisphoto deal also looks like fun and I am looking for an excuse to go back to Paris.
-
Oh sweet memories of last year and my Zeiss Ikon which I still love and use to this very day
Best go along again this year.
Nigel - capital idea young man, a breakfast, yes a capital idea.
-
In my calender. I'll be there for sure.
-
looks like we'll have quite a turn out. Cafe for breakfast sounds like a good idea to me.
-
OK, so this is looking really promising. Hopefully we'll get a lot of people to go along. Personally I can't wait. Maybe Miller could put in an appearance minus the walking stick this year ;)
I've been to 4 of the last 5 Photographicas and am conceited enough to think this post may therefore be of interest to those planning to come along (or thinking about it), but who have never been before. So here are some points and pointers in the interests of everyone having a good day and maximising their time by focusing on what's important to them on the day:
- Other than the entry fee, you don't HAVE to buy anything so a lack of funds shouldn't put you off attending. I've had no disposable income for so long now, that I don't even think of Photographica as a place to buy stuff and have to remind myself that that's actually what it's all about. For example, my total spend last year was £2.99. I bought a new rear lens cap for one of my Bronnys.
- If you do want to buy stuff though, I would suggest getting there early-ish. It's not like the Harrods sale where thousands of locust-like shoppers tear through the merchandise in the 30 minutes following the doors opening, but by the mid afternoon some stalls start packing up, so there's definitely less choice.
- Conversely, if you're going along to get a taste of the event and meet some other FWers, but aren't particularly interested in buying stuff, I would most heartily recommend staying until the mid/late PM because the room empties out and is a lot easier to navigate. I love the last hour or so; just strolling around a huge room filled with amazing equipment and crazy people, thinking, "Film cameras. Lots of film cameras. How cool!" while everyone else heads for the door. It's my favourite time of the event.
- If you're in any way associated with this website, the chances are, you will be filmed for the subsequent video podcast and possibly be prepared to answer a stupid question or 30 posed by me ;)
- The wearing of Filmwasters t-shirts (as pioneered in 2010 by Nigel) is strongly encouraged. Aside from the cachet of being so on 'the inside' that your ears will bleed from pride, wearers of Filmwasters t-shirts will receive 45% discount on all Hasselblad or Linhof equipment from any stallholder in the room *
- If it's a hot day be prepared for "Photo Man Smell" (and I use the gender very specifically). There's no escaping the fact that most photo geeks are bearded, middle-aged, overweight men who give off a certain collective 'aroma' once they're packed in their hundreds into a confined space with loads of exciting camera gear on display for them to fondle. Once you've been in the room for 20 minutes you don't notice it, but it's hard not to notice it when you first turn up :o :D
- Salvo: you have to go. It's over a year since Leon and I last saw you and we need a catch up. Please clear your calendar and come along.
- Photographica is so hip it's not even vaguely hip. It's tradition versus fashion. It's craft versus superficiality. It's a people-watching exercise par excellence and it's a truly joyous occasion It appeals to me on nearly every level and, as a Filmwaster, it fills me with enough "Ooomph!" to rip through another year, safe in the knowledge that film and film cameras are here to stay.
* Not actually true. Your ears won't bleed and you won't get any discount. But I will probably buy you a beer/tea/coffee/cherry brandy.
And if you're one of the 46 people in the world who haven't seen the most recent Filmwasters video podcast there's a feature on last year's Photographica. It starts at around 15:20 into the show. Enjoy:

Excellent, it sounds like it's shaping up to be a great day out and I'm glad my slightly embarrassing sporting of the Flimwasters t-shirt hasn't ruled me out of coming this year. :)
I've carried out some extensive, but largely fruitless, cafe research. I did get over excited when I realised the Regency Cafe (somewhere I've always wanted to visit) is just around the corner.
http://russelldavies.typepad.com/ateaandathink/2004/06/regency_cafe_17.html (http://russelldavies.typepad.com/ateaandathink/2004/06/regency_cafe_17.html)
Unfortunately they don't open on Sundays. :'( :'(
Nor does Tony's, also near by. Although they did apologise for not doing so when I phoned them - that's service! If anyone can recommend a suitable greasy spoon, then please do. The Google hasn't been much help so far.
Nigel
-
Funnily enough, last year I asked the guys at Square Mile Coffee (via Twitter) where a good cuppa Joe was to be had near Victoria and they put me onto some hipster coffee cart which operates in the area, but then I found out it wasn't there on Sundays.
This doesn't help you in any way, but I thought I'd mention it for reasons of solidarity.
;D ;D
-
Just seen reference to "Filmwasters T-Shirts". Are these still available? If so, as I am rather "full of frame" do they go to XXXL...?? I'd love to get my hands on a couple if they're still on sale.
I'm also going to try to get to the event and will use liberal amounts of soap and deodorant to avoid the "Photo Man Smell" which, from the way you describe it, is the absolute opposite of "The Lynx Effect". ;D
-
Hi LD - The logo was made available for you to use. Here's an earlier post with the download and an explanation.
http://www.filmwasters.com/forum/index.php?topic=958.0 (http://www.filmwasters.com/forum/index.php?topic=958.0)
I used Zazzle and was very pleased with the quality of the shirt and the printing.
Of course if you get one you have to post a shot of you wearing it! ;)
-
Thanks for that Nigel. Now downloaded and residing safely in my hard drive.
Just checked out Zazzle and they also do BIG sizes. Birthday next week, so I might just treat myself to a few as some of my old tee-shirts are a bit "worn"...
As for the photo - it's often been said that I have the perfect face - for radio!
-
LD: I enjoyed the Lynx Effect observation. I'd say that pretty much sums it up :D ;D It would be great to meet you, so do let us know if you're able to make it down to Photographica this year.
-
I picked this up the other day ..
-
aargh, why don't he have these where I live?! haha :D
thanks for the link to the video, ed. I just thought about it when I read the topic again - any plans to get this years meet-up into a vod/podcast?
-
Ed
I'll be there minus the crutches though after today's Sunbeam Pioneer Motorcycle Run from Epsom to Brighton I'm glad to be home in one piece.
Anyway, I work in Vicky so I'll look out for a Sunday spot that's open.

"I work in Vicky"
I had to read that a few times to understand it :)
-
If I'm free on that day I'll be there, I'm after an old L/Format portrait lens.
Jon.
-
Well, I think that I am home so will try my hardest to be there. I may have to make a final decision closer to the date!
-
Great stuff, Phil. It would be nice to meet finally :-)
-
Bit late to the party but it looks like I can probably join you guys if that's okay :) Didn't manage to get to Photographica last year, might as well try this year. Trying to remember if they have similar stands with magic lantern slides and old photos like the tiny camera fair up here does. Last time I went to a camera fair, I ended up with goodies of old slides of weird medical proddings :D
-
i'd like to come just to meet you all and drink tea :). i'll see if i can nearer the time too.
-
excellent - looks like there is going to be hoards of us!
-
Right I'm booking my train ticket from Nottingham as soon as I get paid, I will save every penny I can spare so I'm loaded for the day :-P from now until may 21st I will buy no more cameras! Only film... lots of film.
We have very little like this (that i can find) in my area, this is basically like some sort of wonderful dream come true.
I may even get my silk screen out and have a crack at a home made filmwasters t-shirt :-)
would love to meet some people IRL.... *did i seriously just use that expression*
-
They call me the thread killer....
whats up guys did I over enthuse slightly?! :-P
-
It looks like, all going to plan, there could be a maximum of 19 'wasters on the day. Incredible. Maybe we should be hiring our own hall for a FW conference?
-
I'm still trying to remember the cafe I always go to after the show. There is one open around there but I can't remember *where* for the life of me... checking google.
(taken with my finetta)
Actually that may help, i see a pub in the background...
Ahha, I have found it! But the only review of it online says it's scummy (it wasn't the last two times we went, though, wasn't any problems that I found)
Cafe Hamlet, 12 Artillery Row... kind of on the corner of Greencoat Place and Artillery Row.

Heather - Miller is FW local rep maybe he can help?

Okay, I went for a recon’ around Vicky this afternoon ;) … As most of us will be alighting from Vicky Station and using Vauxhall Bridge Road en route I’ve found two spots that are open on a Sunday on the V.B. Road.
The Buddah Box café next door to The Queen Mother Sport Centre so easy for any rookie to spot and get directions if needed.
The Jugged Hare which is a Fullers pub virtually on the corner with Rochester Row..
The pub is open from 12.00 which may represent a problem for early birds but the Buddah is open from 9.00.
Lastly, I strayed away from the usual Starbucks, Costa Coffee spots as not my cup of frappuccino or whatever…

Well, me and Heather met up at the Potters Bar fair earlier today and hopefully this is a taster of thing to come...
Picked up all these toys for about £80.00 (not including the Polaroid 340 camera shown for the Kaligar lens and viewfinder)...
Happy days....
Mlr
-
Nice to see you picking up some goodies at the pre-show ;) Nothing like getting in early.
Hw was the Potter's Bar fair? Any good?
Also, thanks for the recce around Victoria. Is/was the cafe next to the sports centre called Nourish? I had a look on Google maps and there's a healthy eating Thai place called Nourish immediately to the right of the sports centre:
Nourish Cafe
223 Vauxhall Bridge Road
London
SW1V 1EL
020 7828 0087
It looks great, but maybe a bit pokey. If you think there's enough room then I'm more than happy to meet there - assuming we're starting earlier this year as has been suggested. I'm no fan of corporate coffee either, so am happy to avoid those places too.
Otherwise, if no-one's going to get to Victoria before noon, the pub is possibly a better starting point if there are going to be as many of us as I think there will.
Thoughts, please everyone :)
-
I'm a little confused is Buddha Box now called Nourish? Or is that somewhere else entirely? The Thai healthy eating thing is all very well but I just saw the pre-Photographica vibe to be a bit more old-school greasy spoon (otherwise it's in danger of sounding a bit hipster, isn't it?).
Nourish does look a bit small. As a side note I would have thought google would have got their technology down so we could get a full 3-d tour by now not stuck with this rather flat 2-d image!
I was sort of up for getting there a bit earlier than pub lunch, but I'll be guided by the crowd.
(this is not a digital image by-the-way!)
-
Hw was the Potter's Bar fair? Any good?
Well we nearly freaked out totally at there being no one in the side room :o :o Then we were told that it was due to it being Easter hols so not so many of the vendors turned up and so they decided to shuffle everyone into the main hall. And they'll be back at the next fair (and I assume Photographica too) Phew!
Otherwise not too bad. I found a giant box of type 80 film but I have no type 80 cameras :( It also had 1 pack of spectra film in it (again, they managed to find the only film I do not have cameras for :/)
I got away with 8 glass slides* (which I've not scanned yet) and a slightly expensive oddity of a US box brownie in green in perfect condition... except for missing a handle which I'll probably make a functional replica based on the other brownies I have.
*Only two were similar medical themed as before, then 2 holiday snaps from the late 40s and a few more random things.
-
Heather: Thanks for the review. It's typical about the film being the wrong type, isn't it. Happens to me too.
Nigel: Totally with you re the intended vibe, but Sundays are a pain when it comes to greasy spoons. It makes no sense to me at all, but it's harder finding one that's open on a Sunday. My assumption also was that we'd be meeting up before noon, but there's often a difference between people's intentions and the final situation. I live about 5 miles from Victoria so it's easy for me to be flexible on this one. Was waiting to see what the consensus was.
-
Correct...
Two greasy spoons (International Filmwasters must wonder what a greasy is) informed me they do not open on Sundays. I suppose their type of client is not around on the sabbath... Not a greasy eater or tea bag drinker myself and I normally bring sandwiches and buy a bottled drink.
Nourish appears to be called Buddah Box now and an early start suits me as the early bird gets the spoils...
-

I was planning getting to London before noon anyway and grab a bite there somewhere or bringing my own panino. Pretty flexible and very happy to meet anybody getting there before noon.
-
I'd prefer an early start than later ...
-
...an early start suits me as the early bird gets the spoils...
Good point. Let's make it a 3PM start then, and I'll make sure to be there as the doors open to nab any decent deals :)
But seriously, folks. What do we mean by 'early'? Doors open at 10AM. Anyone going to get there for then? One suggestion I could make is why not arrange a meet for around 12 or 1PM at the pub which would allow people to visit the show at any point prior to that to browse, buy, agonise, lust, breathe in the 'man smell' and then take an hour out in the pub before heading back for the quieter PM session (or heading home....or staying in the pub)?
That might work better than trying to get everyone together beforehand. There's a cafe in the hall itself, but I can't see us getting everyone round a table like last time (I assume there will be more of us this year?).
-
I'm for going at 10AM. Seriously, it gets too quiet in the afternoon in my limited experience, vendors start packing up at 2PM sometimes, I think.
-
I'll be there for a 10am start and the pub afterwards.
J.
-
My plan was to get there early doors. Happy to meet up before, during and after as long as it's not too late.
-
Mrs LD ("Lara") and I will do our best to be there for 10am. It shouldn't be a problem, though we're travelling via "National
Express Disgrace" from East Anglia, as we do every weekday morning. Consequently, as it's such a crap service, arrival (let alone arrival time) at Liverpool Street is variable in the extreme.
It doesn't appear they have any scheduled engineering works (or other pre-planned excuses for delays) on that weekend, so the 07:13 + a tube ride to Victoria should have us there well before 10:00.
If I don't manage to get Filmwaster shirt or other prominent item printed before then, I'll be wearing a Che Guevara T-Shirt. As I am not the smallest of people, my frame, grey crew cut and glasses should be recognisable. If someone wants to volunteer to take a note of my mobile number and give me theirs, I can also find you if we are delayed for whatever reason.
Looking forward to it....

'I agree with Ed'
I know a few faces from last year so I'm happy to commit to be there by 10am and station myself on the steps with a cup of Java sporting my FW t-shirt. If someone can nominate a local pub just in case we do miss anyone? I like the idea of some liquid refreshment then heading back to hoover up any last-minute impulse purchases. :)
If anyone wants my mobile number send me a PM.

Just catching up on this thread, I reckon I'll get to the fair around 11ish for a good browse at all the stalls.. I want stuff!
-
If I do indeed make it I will plan on being there severly early :-P
I will be staying at a friends house (whose address I have yet to find out) but am hoping to have a venture round the big smoke for a bit of street photography or general madness on saturday 21st so If anyone fancies it let me know. obviously will be easier to plan once i know where my friend lives, will keep you posted.
-
Cool. It transpires I'll be in London anyway for a friend's 40th so I'll be there to contribute to the communal musk of camera nerd.
-
if only it was a few hours drive.
-
I just spoke to someone at Silverprint who will have a stall at Photographica, they are going to be selling a whole bulkload of AGFA APX100 for £1 a roll special offer - I asked if they could sell some 120 film cheap too and he said he would see what he could do... ;D
-
I'm jealous. A rare emotion, but reading this I am. So there.
-
Woo, will definitely get in on that, going to book my train ticket tonight (keep forgetting :-p ) should have a few wage packets to spend.
-
I can be there at 9.00am for a greasy spoon brekkie if one is going.
I have money to spend.
It is my birthday 3 days later
I will be amongst FW's
Does life get any better
-
right tickets finally booked, one nottingham filmwaster inbound.
is there any detailed Itinerary yet?
i.e. people looking for bargains meet here at this time
then big filmwasters meet and greet lunch maybe?
then all converge back on the fair as a unit?
-
then all converge back on the fair as a unit?
Sounds like a military operation! Haha ;D
-
Looks like I won't be able to make it after all. :'(
A recent family berevement and possible looming redundancy conspire to keep me away. I was really looking forward to actually meeting some of you guys. Next year, perhaps.
-
then all converge back on the fair as a unit?
Sounds like a military operation! Haha ;D
i HAVE been watching alot of generation kill recently. what a series.
sorry to hear of your berevement harragan, I'm sure there will be another meet up before long.
-
really sorry to hear that Harragan - hope things start to pick up for you soon.
I hope to be there for about 10:20. If anyone wants to meet up outside the front entrance then, I'll be there. I'll recognise Heather, Ailsa, Ed, Miller and Nigel (and Vicky if she's coming) ... so all should be good - anyone else, will have to PM me your mobile no (and I'll return the favour) and I'll text you once I'm there/ or you can do likewise.
Did we agree on a pub or are we just going to wing it?
L.
-
Leon I'll email you my number, I'm likely to be running late now as I have to get there from Essex instead of Norf London. Bah...
-
aiming to be there at 11-ish (depending on trains etc). I should be able to remember how you look like (the well known photographic memory) I've still your number so I can try and get hold of you when I arrive.

It's possible that I may have to catch a last minute Sat flight to Bogota but otherwise I will be there 9AM-ish.
-
Have been searching for a joint to get a full english in my tum beofre it kicks off, you would think f you ran a website that listed all the places in London in a data base you might ask a simpe question for instance "What are your opening hours?"
Unless nayone else has cracked this one I will call some joints tomorrow.
-
I'll be going too... although I'm meeting few friends of mine so not quite sure what time I'll get there, but I want to get there early!
-
Ahh - salvo,of course I'll recognise you - but my mobile number has changed since we last met ...
Ken - I'll recognise you too :) Forgot you guys were coming.

Its an odd moment in life when you become - forgettable :-[
-
Will see you all there, quite a turn out ;D
-
I am still hoping to make it....
Leon can i have your mobile number please for when i inevitable get lost/arrive late/end up in birmingham.

-
Still looks likely that my missus and I will be there. Anyone prepared to give me their mobile number so that there's some possibility of being able to identify and meet up with fellow Filmwasters.....?

If you see this guy lurking around hide your wallets and lock up your woman!
I am going to try Metro Cafe for some bacon sarnies and coffee from around 9.00am and then walk to the show about 10.00am

Looking forward to seeing the gang. I've been reading this week's AP mag gleefully reading about how film cameras are still thriving.
I have dibs on any cheapish sx-70s though... I've got a box of film here and then realised my sx-70 was broken :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
-
Oh, I'm really looking forward to it. I had a great time last year and with even more FW's going this year it should be great! See you all there!
Nigel
-
Ken: Lovely leather strides. I'll look out for them on Sunday ;)
I'll be getting there sometime in the morning and will mooch about the hall before heading to the pub at noon. Looks like there's going to be a good crowd. If anyone needs my mobile number just email me. See you there.
-
Ed - did we have the name of a pub? Just in case folk don't get there before refreshment time!

Have a great time folks.

so if things go according to plan i should get there around 11 ish.
see you there :)
-
Ed - did we have the name of a pub? Just in case folk don't get there before refreshment time!
Good question. No.
It was Miller's idea I think first. Let me see if I can find it.
-
Just realised the time. Need to head out soon myself and I haven't even done my make-up :-) So, I'll have to switch to Twitter for the rest of the announcements. If anyone sees Miller then he'll know the name of the pub. Otherwise, just grab hold of another Filmwaster and we'll make sure everyone 'on the team' is made aware of where the pub is before we head over there at lunch time.
-
I'm here on the cafe balcony almost spent up! Eek. Gimme a shout if u see me.
-
Just got home after the event and wanted to say:
(a) it was fantastic to meet up with so many of you all in one go - and sorry that we didn't get chance to introduce ourselves to all of you
(b) thank you for making Lara and I so welcome at our first group meet
(c) that pub was an inspired choice for lunch...... ;D
Best wishes. Paul (and Lara, of course.....)
-
Ditto Paul!
Great to meet all of you and already looking forward to next year :)

I also apologise for not properly introducing myself to everyone. I was a bit overwhelmed by such a large group!

Fantastic bl**dy day. Thanks everyone for coming out and making it such a fun time. The pub was a great choice. Thanks to Miller for scoping it out. Lots of video for the next podcast and there will be some stills being linked to in the next day or so...or sooner (thanks, Heather!).
And before I sign off may I be the first to say what a lovely bunch of people you all are. Cheers!

Top Time !
Hope you made it back ok Leon ;D
My purchases of the day ...

Oh and I've trimmed a roll of FP4+ and whacked in the the Brownie ;D ;D ;D

I had a great time and it was so good to meet so many of you. Let's not make it another year until we meet up again.
Here's an interesting article on the BBC web site about Photographica and film photography : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/13452289 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/13452289)

yeah, it was really fantastic to meet all of you Filmwasters for the first time. on the way back along a convoluted route to cambridge i managed to waste one of those £1 Afga rolls i picked up there... 19 to go.
bye for now
Thil

I had a great day - brilliant to meet so many new faces and also to catch up with some more familiar ones. I'm also 20 rolls of apx100 better off, the proud owner of the definitive guide to making and using photographic emulsions (should come in handy when photo paper stops being made), and a handy cable release. Pukka.
-
I should add that top marks go to Thil for recognising me on the underground before we even got to the venue. Those darn video podcasts!
-
seriously cracking day grommit!
so fantastic to meet you all and put faces to pseudonyms.
chuffed with the bargains only wish i had more cash for the wonderfully cheap deal on the apx! came away with 7 rolls, which much like Thil, soon became 6 after wasting one away throughout the day and on the journey home (will get it dev'd + scanned and sent to you ed if you fancy some more shots for the vidcast)
i concur on the note that we should get together again soon! would be a shame to leave it another year. howabout that fair in wolverhampton ?! much more convenient for me :-)

What a busy weekend!!
After spending quite a few time at the Photographica I still managed to see the Watercolour exhibition at the Tate Britain and take some pictures as the weather was beautiful...my legs are killing me now!
It was really nice to be able to see some of the filmwaters friends today, shame I couldn't go the pub... top marks to Ed as well as he recognized me even though I wasn't wearing my Ramones T Shirt!! ;D
What I had in mind to buy was way out of my budget so ended up spending the little money I had on 10 rolls of the cheap Agfa, some Adox 120 and a £0.50 1964 expired funny film called Perutz that comes with the leader ready cut for the screw mount Leica.
But the bargain really came as I was leaving the fair when I saw this little Vito B in almost pristine condition on the "borken cameras for £10.00" table. The guy in the end sold me for £5 and I guess I just managed fixing...
-
Hey, Sapata, watch that Perutz stuff. When I was a kid in the 70's and couldn't afford anything better, I used to buy Perutz slide film as it was a fair bit cheaper than Kodachrome, Ilfochrome, Agfachrome and Fujichrome. I think it was made by (or owned by) Agfa but it had quite a pronounced green tint to shadows and dark areas. I grew to dislike it intensely and, eventually, refused to buy it anymore.
I'd be really interested to see the results.
-
Mauricio: you're going to love that Vito B. They need to have film in them to actually "work" since the shutter cocking is through the film sprockets. I know I have one too and just love it :)

Thanks for the tip Paul... I've opened the box and the cartridge seems to be made of a very cheap plastic, I notice that you only the to unscrew the top to get access to the film. I've also found strange the "20 Aufnahmen" inscription... does that mean 20 exposures ?

Francois... I'm in love already ! It fits so perfectly in my hands... the weight... everything!
I know about the shutter as it works in the same way of my Vito II but thanks for the tip. I've already put a dummy film inside to test, all speeds are working perfectly including the self timer. Mine is the "Prontor SVS" model which is coupled with the aperture apparently... still figuring out how it works before running a film through. What's the green speeds on the right are for? I can't get access to that... It goes as far as B... broken mybe?

I went to photographica very early (I bought some APX too, as almost everybody else) but had to rush out due to a work emergency and that was before I got to see anybody wearing a FW t-shirt. Hope you had a good time, I will try to show up if there's another meeting some other time.
One thing I'd like to say though is that for next year's photographica they should put a body scanner and refuse entry to anybody who hadn't had a shower in the last 12 hours.

EWW!
Sadly I missed out as I had to wait for a lift back to London and we got stuck in traffic :'(

Sorry you didn't make it Suzi.
I think another Photographica award is in order:
Worst injury caused by an octogenarian camera collector
Third degree burns to the hand of Ken Binns (Ken182). A generic 80yrs+ camera collector (in standard issue unwashed khaki gillet with pocket's bulging and enormous billingham hanging by side), barged Ken out of the way to get to a rare leikon viewflex, causing coffee spillage from the cup of steaming beverage held by said Filmwaster.
Hope the hand isn't too sore Ken.

Poor Ken!
Bummed to have missed it but not disappointed to have missed out on the musty smells everyone keeps mentioning.. I can't even go in vintage clothing stores without gagging at the musty smells!
What spoils did everyone pick up?

Great to meet everyone yesterday. I did make it to the pub but spent most of it downstairs listening to Stoo Batchelor and Jon Butler having a rant... a very enjoyable and funny rant I might add...
I missed out out on a very nice Isolette III at only £35 as I'd spotted another just a few tables away where the seller wanted £199.00!!!! by the time I retraced my steps it had gone! Still I came away with a pack of the Impossible project B&W film for my SX-70
Can relate to some of the odd characters there especially the Saga louts... and they bang on about the young people being so rude!

"Saga Louts".....love it!! :)
Difficult to get too uptight about them as that could be me (sooner than I think). However, they certainly knew how to muscle their way to the bargains by the shortest possible route....

Mine has the Prontor SVS shutter too. No coupling on mine though... and no green lettering either...
I wouldn't consider it broken as there probably is some trick to access those (hidden switch maybe)...
Mine has a small XVM switch on the left with colored spots... maybe that triggers it in some way...

Ed, love the pix of the FW's!!
And Miller, you got all that for 80 dollars?!!! WOW!!!
-
About 130 USD... I'll have a play and move most of it down the road as I cannot be bothered to hoard anymore. Just enjoy the kill and the hard bargaining, which is quite easy compared to Kingston, Jamaica. LOL
Rgds
-
That Smena box looks really good!
I bet I could do something nice if I had a good quality scan of it :)
-
;)
-
Wow! That was fast!
Thanks Miller :)
I might retrace it and make it into a t-shirt or something :)
-
PM me your e-mail address and I'll send a larger file... Personally, I'm rather fussy as regards attire but I'd rock this one... Great idea and keep me in mind... I'll also send the flipside which is the same graphics but in english, basically rock both sides of the shirt flipmode.
Sod it, I gotta get one in black on some Fruit of the Loom heavyweight.
Rgds

mamiya RB67 Pro S 120 back £45
Hoya PRO1 digital 77mm UV filter £9!
and we all know the apx was a quid a roll :-)
happy days,
altho the lens seems to be faulty so will have to send that off for repair :-( but if the price is right I still will have saved a bundle of cash
ooooh in addition I bought the mamiya polaroid back with a pack of polapan film for £34 on the bay :-) have a few packs of fp100b sitting and waiting to be shot in this camera aswel now, courtesy of Dzone2 on ebay, very affordable and bloody quick delivery from hong kong, can highly recommend them!
-
er don't think ??? that film will fit in that camera ;D
Mike (only jealous really)
-
haha bit of gaffa tape I will be shooting sprocket holes in it in no time :-P
-
echoing everybody else,it was nice to put faces to names.I got a 28 mm lens for my fujica stx1 ,which I had been looking for, and a fujica ax1, which I wasnt looking for, since the dealer wouldnt split the kit.Combined with an stx1 instruction book and an 80-200 zoom all for 30 quid made me happy.
Its a good job it was 2 days before my payday rather than 2 days after.
Ed ,did we ever find out how much that mugshot camera cost?
-
that's definitely a want!
......... and make it into a t-shirt or something :)
I can only echo what already said a good enjoyable day, great catching up and meeting a few new faces.
No fancy cameras, lenses or film sadly for me, but i went for a needed f-stop enlarger timer that will be tested today (having seen some prices on that auction site it looks like it was a decent bargain). Due to appalling decision making skills i missed a sekonic spot meter.
Again great day out and looking forward to the next.
-
Wow! That was fast!
Thanks Miller :)
I might retrace it and make it into a t-shirt or something :)
Feels strange quoting myself :)
After Miller sent me the files, I did a short re-trace of the image (I loved the Russian one). Not perfect but good enough (I did it quick). Print on T-shirt transfer paper, iron onto a plain white tee (because that's what I had on hand) and voila!
-
I love it !!!!
-
Bargain of the day (for me) is Thom's RB67, lens and back. That is such a cool camera at a give-away price.
I went with the intention of picking up a couple of things but ended up with something I've wanted for years - a Rolleiflex. One stood out on a trade stand (no particular reason) but with a bit of haggling and trading in an old and seldom-used Hassy 250mm lens, I managed to get a great deal on a 3.5t K8-T2 model (made between July 1961 and August 1966) Mine is mid series, so I'm guessing 1964-ish.
Having spent the last couple of days poring over it, I can't see even as much as a missing flake of paint, let alone a dent, ding, scratch or even a bright mark on the exposed metal bits. Internally, it is entirely dust-free, all shutter speeds seem fine (including the self-timer) and even the meter seems to be working. I've run a roll of Fomapan 400 through it and hope to have the results tomorrow.
-
damn. I wish I could have been with! maybe one day.. :D
ed, love the ending with a sole shot of leon staring hahaha xD
-
Nice shirt Francois!
-
Francois - Dam you is fast. I've got the files off miller too, agreed the Cyrillic kicks the Latins arse every time.
Nice Job Chum.
-
Nice shirt F!
All in all a great day and it was fun to confirm that many of the filmwasters were real people and not robots
Think the best deal by far there was the APX at a £1 a pop. Sadly the Ikoflex I bought is probably beyond repair- the shutter wasn't working when I bought and I assume that it just needed a bit of a clean as per usual- alas, no as when I opened up the shutter there were all kinds of bits missing or broken. Somebody stripped it for parts and put it nicely back together again. You win some and you lose some I suppose.
So- anyone got any ideas about where I can get a spare prontor shutter? Or what to do / make with a wrecked TLR?
-
Francois
Nice shirt.
DS how about a pinhole camera?

Today a friend drove me through shoreditch and there was a guy with a little kid getting restless because dad was taking too long to take the picture of a mural as cars were getting on the way. He was using THIS camera. Was that you???
