: LT January 05, 2007, 09:42:26 AM
Happy new year to everyone.

Behind the scenes, we've been having a chat about kick-starting the new year with a few projects to get involved in.  First off is the ...... wait for it ... (drum roll) ....

:o Filmwasters Print Circle :o

Round 1

UK members who are active over on APUG will be familiar with this idea (yes, Dave Miller, I've blatantly ripped you off, sorry ;))

The details are simple

Filmwasters.com members sign up to participate here.  Each person will be given the details of another filmwaster to whom they should send one print. This is not an exchange, you will only ever send one print and will recieve one print but from different people.  So John sends to Chrstine, who sends to Farqious, who sends to Jiminy, who sends to Millisent who sends to John - and thus is the circle completed.

Rules are few:-

1. Prints should be made from film negatives/ positives - no digital capture.
2. Prints should be made on a paper size of 10x 8 or A4 as a minimum although images can be any size upon this
3. Prints can be made in any way including alt processes, silver gelatine, inkjet etc.
4. Any comments/ details/ criticism requests are purely optional, although this can be helpful.
5. There is nothing to stop you making private arrangements to exchange prints within the circle, but that is not the purpose if this excercise
6. Those who do not send on a print after signing up will not be allowed to participate in future rounds until they have done so (unless mitigating circumstances apply)

sign up here:  and send me a PM with the address to which you would like a print sent.  We should give it a few weeks for people to see and sign up, then I'll send all participants the address to which they should send their prints.

here's a picture to remind you of spring (it's coming soon, well for us northerners it is anyway)

I would love to participate as well.  I'll send you my address shortly.

I have a question though.  If it's a color tranny or something color, is it alright to have a lab make the print professionally?  I mean, I don't make my own injets, and would wonder if I might be limited to bw then.  Just curious....since I see your example here is quite lovely and all that.

Thanks,
Tammy
: Re: Filmwasters new year projects
: LT January 07, 2007, 10:06:23 PM
good question Tammy.  Personally, I'd prefer to receive something that someone has created by themselves rather than a lab job, but that is just me.  I wonder what others might think?

The picture posted here wasnt meant to signify anything other than 1. it's been very grey here recently so a bit if spring colour is good to see, and 2. I'm just trying to lead by example to get people to post a few more pics on the forum :)

Ok! :) Thanks for the clarification.    8)   Hard labor of love of my own hands.  gotcha!

Stupid question but I don't want to trample the rules...Are we allowed to scan said neg/pos and make the print from that (no fancy PS work besides the darkroom basics).

My darkroom is nowhere near being functional (as in non-existent) and the labs are non-feasible.

If that's Kosher I'd love to get in.

ok - - this is now closed.  Sorry to those who didnt manage to send me their addresses - I'm afraid you'll have to sit out of this round.  provided this one goes to plan, I'm sure there'll be a round 2 soon.

Private messages with the details of the person you'll be sending to are on the way to all who signed up.

Enjoy the prints everyone.  Please post here when you receive and who from so I can keep a track of the round progress.  ta.

Below's a poor scan (sorry  :-\) of a beautiful print I received from Mr. Aaron Boot.  It is a platinum-printed Holga image and came to me with a nice mat and backing.  As result, it will hang on my wall at work  ;)  This scan does not do justice to the tonality imparted by the platinum.  It is a wonderful print of a lovely image and I thank you, Aaron!

My print arrived today, it was from very talented David Bennett AKA Davidb. My god it is wonderful  :) it is a Platimum/Palladium print and it is so beautiful. I have made an attempt at cpying it for you all to drool over, unfortunately I don't have a scanner so I have had to photograph it to get it up here. I think you'll all agree it is stunning! It was nearly a didaster as the Post Office bless their hearts decided to roll it even though it said  do not bend....luckily no creases and it has flattened a treat. Now off to the framers as this needs to be on my wall!

Thank you David.....I love it.  :)

Sorry to report this, but I'm having problems.

I'd earmarked this weekend for a major printing session. Then the power went out before I arrived home from work on Friday evening. It stayed out until the early hours, came on briefly and then went off again on Saturday afternoon without warning, again until the early hours. It's back on now but only because there's a generator truck from United Futilities sitting on the corner of my street.

My weekend is shot to blazes and I'm way behind on just about everything. I'm really sorry to the organisers and my recipient, but I'm afraid I'm going to be late with this one.   :-[

It's a still life taken with an Ansco 5x7 view camera.  The negative is a Type 55 polaroid.
The print is on Centennial Printing-out-paper and toned in gold. Wow!
Thanks Ron!

In the past I used to exchange photographic postcards with fellow photographers around the world. Over a year or two I amassed a wonderful collection of  small photographic prints including traditional fibre based, RC prints and even a  number of small 5*4 platinum  and  palladium prints.  The most exciting and enjoyable part of collecting these prints was the surprise of arriving home and  finding  a beautiful print among the mail.

That was a few years ago now but it all came flooding back yesterday  when I  received a beautiful print from fellow filmwaster  Leon.  It's a harbour scene of resting boats which are bathed in  beautiful light  and a wonderful sky overhead with some really well defined clouds adding a little bit of drama.  A  really fine  print I will enjoy and treasure.  Thanks Leon.

There has been some really fine work posted here over the last few weeks, as well as receiving prints its such a pleasure viewing so many quality images.

Just got a great print from Eddie Mallin. What makes it even better for me is that I am not a fan of infa-red images - never really seen any that I feel have been enhanced by it but then of course it is just my taste - or lack thereof! However, the print has great detail and atmosphere and the horse just appears 3D - well chuffed!

My image on the way to the USA tomorrow morning!

: LT February 16, 2007, 10:20:05 AM
ok everyone - deadline is this coming monday.

There are 11 prints that have been confirmed as recieved by the recipients.  that leaves 9 more to go.  I know a few have stated theirs are in the post or have let me know difficulties they are experiencing.

I wont start up a round 2 until they are all received or accounted for - if you are having difficulties in honouring your part of the exchange - please let me know ASAP (a pm will be fine) so I can advise your recipient. Please do get in touch with me - having been not sent prints in exchanges before, I know exactly how frustrating it can be to deliberate over sending out a print then get nothing in return.  Although, of course youare all just late in sending out, none of you are considering sending nothing .... right :P ?

Just remember Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit .... no, hang on that's something to do with the treble cleff  .... erm, Every Good Deed Deserves Another (that's better)

I picture my package, so carefully wrapped, floating along the sea.  Drifting and drifting.  Then, suddenly the song "Sea of Love" by the Honeydrippers comes to my mind, and then I can't get the tune out of my head.

So, my deepest apologies to my print recipient, and well, when you get this thing, if you could let me know before I'm totally bald and this Honeydrippers song has made my mind insane, I would much appreciate it.

come with me... my love, to the sea, the sea of love.  blah blah blah blah blah blah.....

Ok sorry for that.   I'll be quiet now.

Tammy

it's not hugely past 2 weeks yet Tammy - give it a bit longer, then  you can start singing!  I once sent a camera to the states that I sold on FeePay - it took three months to get there!

Great... I'm having Al Pacino / Ellen Barkin flashbacks now!  ::)

Still, could be worse. I could have thought of Al Pacino / John Goodman!  :)

D'oh!  :o

Sounds like everything went really well. From the looks of it, some really wonderful work has been exchanged. I was originally hoping to be part of Round 1 but too many things were going on for me to commit. Now that everything's on an even keel (more or less), I'll definitely be jumping feet first into Round 2.

That is gorgeous!!  :)

But, so not fair since you posted this only on Monday, Frank.  Sheesh :).

Still singing.  I'll have to quit checking in, everytime I do I get that song stuck in my head.  :-\

I recieved a really lovely print from Becky and quite a scum bag for not saying so much earlier. I've been busy as hell and that, I'm afraid, has turned me into an ill mannered lout. Please forgive my not saying so much much earlier. It was very fine. I'll can tonight and post it. Thank you again Becky. BennyC

ok - pretty much everyone has got their prints now ... or they've sent them.  I thinks it's time to wrap up the 1st exchange and think about a second. New thread will be started.

Those who have sent but havent heard if the print has been recieved, please contact your person directly.

thanks to everyone who took part.

I am late in my response, lots of travel and weather issues, but I wanted to thank Chricel for the great image!   This is great fun waiting for the image to come.   Good timing for the photo of the tulips, it is still very much winter in the midwest.

Thanks very much
Chris Pierce

I received a fab print from Erika just a couple of days ago (she must have known that a picture related to tea drinking would have been well appreciated by a Brit...). I'll scan it in over the next day or two. I've just taken delivery at home of a stonkingly gorgeous iMac, so as soon as I've stopped stroking its lovely clean, smooth, white lines I'll get round to loading my scanner software...  ::)

I just received this lovely print - "Sunflower" - from Chris Pierce. Thanks Chris! (And also for packing it so well - the print was in perfect condition despite the package looking like the postman was playing football with it...)

Yay Tammy!

A truly stunning print of Rainbow Falls arrived this morning, incredibly delicate in tone and beautifully matted and mounted. With that and the careful packaging I shudder to think at your postage costs!

This one was sent in February (the 3rd?) so it looks like the first one has finally turned up! If you have sent another then please PM me your postal address and I'll send you one of my efforts (not up to your standard, but the best I can do) by way of return.

Many thanks, Tammy. It really is a beaut (tons better than my scanner portrays it)!

All the best

Frank

:)  Frank!  I AM so glad that it finally got there.  Thanks for the very nice message too, letting me know the fact.

Actually, I have been going through ideas of what to post you next, and had printed a few things last week, but had not gotten around yet to finishing anything.   Thanks as well for your offer, but now it looks like the circle is finally completed.  :)

I heard that horrible Honeydrippers song on the radio yesterday and thought about my print.  I cannot believe it took so long.  sheesh....

Just beautiful, Tammy.   Your scape work and darkroom execution is quite enviable  :o
