After reading Ailsa's post about the photographer who used printed backgrounds to make his pictures look better

As far as backgrounds go, a nature photographer I know has an interesting technique. For example, he might want to photograph poppies in a field of corn, but knows that the various out-of-focus poppies in the background will be a distraction. He finds a section of the field without any poppies, throws it completely out of focus, photographs it, then prints it up quite big, mounts the image on card and uses it as a portable background in the field. He has dozens of these things and has worked out how to use them extremely convincingly - you would never, ever know they weren't the real thing. Sounds naff, but it really works! (Of course, he's probably shooting digital now, in which case I doubt he needs to worry about it any more!)

I was tempted to ask a question: has any of you ever resorted to elaborate tricks to make "trick" photos?
And I'm not talking about using Photoshop, that would be much too simple!
I'm talking about everything from elaborate darkroom manipulations to using posters, props and such in order to make things look like what they're not.

To start things off, I decided to bring you a picture of my last trip to Australia.

So one sign is French and the yellow sign is in English. Do I assume the yellow sign is fake?

I have never done a fake image on purpose before but I have to construct an image for this weeks module for one of my classes so by the end of the week I'll have one. Maybe.  :-\

There was a load of hoo-har on Fickle over the last few years (which Gary Moyer alerted us to recently) about the guy who cleverly 'created' a vintage zeppelin shot with a model and some good work with his LF camera. I'll see if i can dig up the link.

Yep, that's the guy. I still can't believe how much noise it made when it first came out :)

I thought it was a really cool concept (and excellently executed), but BOY did the zeppelin enthusiasts take it the wrong way!

Well, some people are just full of hot air... but in their case we should say full of hydrogen... light and easily flammable :)

I've been re-inspired to get busy on an idea for doing something similar to this.

 Thanks for this!

I'll never forget when I found that cool zeppelin picture, was a bit bored and decided to read the comments. hehe~ it's still a funny, weird and a bit frightening read
