Title: Where to go near Skipton?
Post by: sparx on November 21, 2006, 01:24:17 PM
We're of to Skipton in North Yorkshire for a few days next week and I'm wondering if anyone knows the area well at all. I'm looking for old ruins, megaliths and water. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

:)  This is my neck of the woods. If you have a car drive to Malham - No old ruins apart from a few barns.  Water= Janet's Foss waterfall and Goredale scar - both very good after some rain.  Malham cove is a large limestone cliff.  Two pleasant pubs in the village.  For a ruin try Bolton Abbey or further afield Fountains Abbey.   This time of year is good for photography in the dales as they're fewer tourists around.  Enjoy

I've been up that way twice this year - if you manage to get to swaledale, you can pretty much point your camera in any direction and get a decent shot.  I'll second Fountains Abbey  - spectacular place.  There are very few (if any) megaliths as far as I know though ... you could try looking the area up on the http://www.themodernantiquarian.com site though.

Congrats on the forthcoming nuptials by the way.

For anyone's reference who may be thinking of taking a trip that way, we also stumbled upon Brimham Rocks which is about 4 miles from Fountains Abbey. Some spectacular rock formations and stunning views of the surrounding area.
