Title: Krappy Kamera 9 Deadline Dec 30th - note new rules
Post by: Susan B. on September 11, 2006, 10:51:06 PM
The KK9 prospectus can be found here: http://www.sohophoto.com/downloads/kk9_prospectus.pdf

Note the new "digital" rules.

A Word About Digital Cameras
Out-of-the-box digital cameras are not permissable.
However, SLR digital cameras may be modified to
qualify. For example, a Lensbaby can replace the normal
lens or a pinhole body cap can be used in place of
a lens.

 ???

What is a Krappy Kamera?
Examples of the big name brand Krappy cameras are
Holgas, Dianas, Ansco and all pinhole cameras (there
are many more). You can also make your "good"
camera into a Krappy Kamera by exchanging the lens
with a pinhole body cap, Lens Baby, or Holga-type
lens. For example, take an expensive 4 x 5 view camera
and slap a plastic Holga lens on it and you have
a qualifying Krappy camera. Other examples include
replacing your SLR digital or film camera's lens with
a Lensbaby or a pinhole body cap. Out-of-the-box
disposables or point-and-shoot cameras are ineligible,
their lenses are too good to be krap. Remember, just
because a camera is old and moldy doesn't make it
krappy.
THE LENS IS THE DETERMINING FACTOR

I notice that Lenbabies is a sponsor of Krappy Kamera. Wonder if that had anything to do with it (wink wink nudge nudge) ;-)

As journalists say: Follow the money trail and you'll understand.

But this time, I think I have nothing to complain about (except to the US resident rule... but well... it's just as usual)
I'm just happy to see that hacked optics will be welcome. Maybe they will spread the standard for toy camera/cheap camera.

???  Interesting.  I still find that pinholes on 4x5, lensbabies on pro quality bodies, and the like, are not really in keeping with my idea of crappy 'camera'.  It's either a crappy camera, or it's a good camera, with a crappy lens.  :-\

---different animals there.  I had considered giving it a shot this time around, but I'm not now.  It's just a bit too broad.

Hey Tammy,
Makes me terribly sad that one of the last true film contests bit the dust. But in truth, it's just the way of the world now so we have to adapt.

My hope is for all the tc film folks in the US is to give it a shot so we have a better chance of maintaining the true film spirit of the contest.

I've been in the show twice and it's always a great exhibition run by people who really care about the art.
The woman who handles most of Krappy Kamera, Sandra Carrion, is a fantastic person who really, really cares about the quality of the exhibition.
So I have to think that the gallery had their reasons for doing this--sad as it is and as much as I wish they didn't do it.

So consider sending in-- if only to maintain the integrity of our beloved film based tc cameras and also because you have a lot of beautiful shots that deserve consideration. :)

Maybe they should rename it Krappy Lens. I, too, lament the intrusion of digital to this contest but I think, for the most part, the vast majority of the winners will be filmwasters like ourselves. Personally, I still haven't seen a lensbaby shot that I've really liked yet. It seems to have a certain visual signature, particularly the streakiness in the blurred areas, that I just don't care for. Then again, maybe I'm looking in the wrong places and someone will eventually prove me wrong. But that's just this filmwaster's humble opinion. Your mileage may vary.

Tammy, Susan's right. You should submit. Your toy work is damn good. I know I will continue to enter -- the majority tc with one or two from the homebrew stuff this time around -- since the latter seems to have been give the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval though not Sold American (apologies to Kinky Friedman). And all of the proofs will be put up in Soho's upstairs gallery, too. So everyone will get a chance to be well hung... oops! Did I say that? Shame on me... ;-)

I agree that Digital is sadly overtaking the world.

And now to see that nearly all the contests allow digital, somehow really gets me fired up.
In some ways, it's just unfair to have straight prints having to fight against photoshopped stuff.

And if Lensbabies is the sponsor, you can be pretty well assured that a lens babies picture will win... remember the money trail...

Thanks Susan, and Bill.  :)   I got a bit wiggy for a moment  ::) ahem.

But, Susan, I can also understand the point you have made.

I just really love the toys so much.  :-*

This hurts a bit...Like Susan, I made the show twice and even garnered a honorable mention with a plastic camera and +3 diopter filter...the lensbaby folks are sure attaching their product to everything plastic camera related it seems. I have nothing against them as capitalists but aren't there other advertising venues besides the Krappy Kamera show for their product? It seems film use is getting more and more sparse as folks attach plastic lenses to their $5K digibeasts or, as noted somewhere here, you can just point your camera into another camera and steal its classic view of the world...I'm all for freedom to shoot whatever you want but there's that old timer side of me that just wants them to leave my little fun zone alone...sigh...I'll still submit something for sure and hope that a show that I have great respect for continues the high standards previously set and met the past few years...

Shame about the US-only thing, I needed a good reason to give my neglected Diana a workout!
