I thought I'd ask everyone what kind of photo projects you all are working on. I have at least four long-term projects that on-going but the one I've been putting a lot of energy lately into is one I've tentatively entitled 'Across The State Line':

These are all lovely Bill; I particularly like, "Fine Food". What's the relevance of the project's title? Are all photos shot outside of your home state maybe?
My current project - in which I'm being ably assisted (if not led) by Susan - is to modify or build a camera that will take 5X4 Polaroid film. I have a few packs of 55 that I've been meaning to use up for nearly 2 years, but no camera other than my Graph Check sequence cam that can deal with the 545 holder for this format of film.

Hmmm... still kicking along the Japanese version of the Toy Camera handbook - due sometime this decade I hope (at least before the toy camera bubble bursts hopefully). Supposed to be working on a gallery project (yeah right). But, still madly wasting film all over the place on abandoned subjects as fast as I can shoot.
Ohhh... then there's a little site called filmwasters.com I am trying to foster and develop with some other like-minded friends. Not quite sure how that one's gunna play, but I'm having fun regardless.

Actually, Ed, I'm shooting along the state borders (so far Illinois-Indiana, Illinois-Wisconsin, Illinois-Missouri and Tennessee-Arkansas for starters) and trying to capture the depth and breadth of life on and near the state line. I'm trying to limit myself to shooting within 10km on either side of the border to particularly get glimpses of the small towns that lie there. Earlier this month, I did a two day road trip up and down the Illinois-Indiana state line. One of the more interesting places was this tiny blip of a town right on the state border in Indiana called State Line City. It's six blocks wide and deep, surrounded by corn fields on three sides and a huge grain processing facility across the railroad tracks to the north.
Next on my list is the Ohio-Pennsylvania border near Youngstown, OH. I'll be down there in a week from tomorrow on our way back from visiting family in Western New York. And I'll also have the pleasure of meeting up with my favorite Pennsylvanian filmwaster, beck.

Youngstown!! I was born and lived near there for awhile (Salem, OH)! Check out Lisbon and Leetonia, OH for some interesting small towns (more than your radius inside the border, though). Tell Beck "Hola" for us. I like this post and love your images. I have too many things going on right now. One ongoing project is an investigation of Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, NC (+100 acre cemetery established after Union soldiers threatened to dig up Confederate dead placed in a 'National' cemetery elsewhere in Raleigh) . I am using expired Polaroid Spectra film, ripping it open after complete development & printing it on diazo paper. I may post some images later. Eager to see more of your images!

I'm just now starting my first projects of sorts. For the most part, I just snap around at stuff all willy-nilly. I was recently using Polaroid type 59, and doing transfers of things growing around my yard, but I was interrupted when I ran out of film, then my flowers started to die. :( I will probably get back to it as more interesting things happen, although Polaroid film is getting right expensive these days. :-\
Another little side project is focusing on taking pictures of my children with my old 8x10 camera (and contact printing), and I've finally broke down and bought myself a little 4x5 pinhole camera as a birthday gift. I'm taking it to the beach (SC) next week. yay.
Leon, your pinholes are very nice. What are you contact printing on?
Ron, I am not sure what you just said, but it sounds very interesting and creative as always! :)

Leon - the Kidson pinhole is stunning and the others are up there with it - not sure you have anything to worry about as far as pinhole and contact printing goes!

Bill. let me get this straight, you have kids right? Or at least I think you do....if so how on earth do you get the time to do a project like this? I'm lucky if I get 30 minutes a week to dedicate to photography (I'm serious here). Tell me howz you do it.

these are on 8x10 forte polywarmtone, but I've just bought some POP to mess around with too

i have a few plans, first off it was renovation projects in Birmimgham, the old fort dunlop plant and rover plant, both fell through, too busy and they eventually didnt want me on site as all their deadlines were fast approaching.
Also my brother goes boxing and another mate is into archery, i had grand plans to capture it all in grainy B&W, just seem too busy at the moment, new job, planning other stuff. still.....one day.....

Yeah, I do have a kid, Ed, but he's now -- OMG! -- 13. Couldn't have done any of this when he was a mere youngin' like yours. I occasionally take him on photo outings with me -- the most recent was our one day Wisconsin beer run slash photo shoot a week ago -- but the two day state line sojurn was actually a Father's Day gift from him and my wife.

More like the stuff used for bread, baking and booze... you know, whole grain goodness... Delta 2000000? Hell, you'd overexpose at candlelight with that! ;-)

Ah ha! That explains it. You're an old hand. Anyway, only another 12 years for me and I'll be able to take that 2 day trip for some quality shotting time (and even then I'll probably forget my cameras or something :)) Great present BTW; you have the family well trained.

I've worked on the Pier Head in Liverpool for the last nine years, albeit in a sort of a two years on/two years off sort of way (long (boring) story). My route in and out has usually been along the Dock Road and I became increasingly interested in doing a project on that area.
The dock wall and some of the buildings date back to the early 1800's and it was once an area of dense industry and quite high prosperity (for some). After a very sharp decline in its fortunes it's now starting on its way back up. There are some major industrial sites, including a large scrap metal processing plant, waste grounds being turned into yuppie apartment blocks, old railway lines half-buried in the road, disused drinking fountains set into the wall, derelict buildings next to new shopfronts... Photographic nirvana, basically! I was really looking forward to it.
Of course, me and the majority of my colleagues got made redundant earlier this year and kicked out the door as soon as we'd finished training the Indian staff to whom our jobs had been off-shored. (Bitter? Me? Naahhh! ::) ) I now work in Manchester, which has sort of put a crimp on the whole idea... :(

Yeah that would be very dramatic! My money's on the guy with the bow and arrows :)
I've got this thing about local decaying military sites, there's plenty round here. Visited loads over the winter, need to go back and have another go now.

Frank - there's still a lot of similar stuff (decayed industry in flux) around Ancoats, the Quays, etc... in Manchester / Salford - although I guess we're a few years further along the regeneration road than Liverpool... I've always thought the Lpool docks were great too, and I really like the Another Place installation a few miles along in Crosby.

David - Yeah, the other two year periods I was spending at the company's other office in Old Trafford. I must admit, the morning treck into the centre does have me eyeing up the Cerestar plant in Trafford Park. Not quite the same feeling of history being rewritten though.
Mind you, the Lowry is always good for a pop (once you've told the jobsworth security guards to mind their own!).

The people redeveloping the area around Ancoats and Islington Wharf have a photographer on staff to document all the changes around there - saw his stuff a while back and wasn't very impressed, although the idea was a good one I guess. As for history being rewritten - Ancoats was the first industrialised area in the world, and in the process of being designated a World Heritage Site, so not too shabby!
Getting back to the thread subject though - I have sort of accidentally started a project about the architecture of power recently, although I'm not sure where it's going at the moment. And, as ever, it has to come after the sorts of projects that allow me to put food on the table... ho hum...

Also, have got two ongoing ideas, hate to call them projects since I rarely finish those. Firstly, to get some nice portraits on glass plates [I have loads of unexposed plates] plus, take in the local working people - while I am working p/t!

I've been busy writing an astronomy book, and haven't shot much of anything for the past 7 months.
However, I can finally see some film goo at the end of the tunnel, and
2 weekends ago I made a extra wide angle pinhole camera that I plan on using to shoot some unique pinhole-astrophotos with.
My test shot is on my blog, it's not astro...so beware.
