Title: In camera RA4!
Post by: irv_b on March 06, 2025, 07:34:25 PM
I follow Joe on Youtube and saw he osted this new camera system from Ethan Moses. Looks interesting but I would imagine quite pricy as well as being quite heavy, but what a cool process

Interesting if nothing else.

I saw this last week. This thing is completely bonkers!
And when he says he's been working on this for the last 14 months, I really believe him as these things take a long time to perfect.
I once sunk 6 months and a whole spool of filament into a 35mm pinhole camera that actually works and has an actual frame counter and not just a clicker.

It's true, it's real, I've seen it and played with it.
That's me in the video about the 14:32 mark or so.

I know 😊
While it's probably not too heavy of a camera, it sure is quite cumbersome!

You will get a workout holding it, that's for sure!

So he did manage to get more than a few 1kg spools in that one?
One thing's for sure, it must have took a good week to print all the parts to just this part of the system.

He's been working on this so long, I've lost count.
Joe goes every week and helps out, I go about once a month and sit in Ethan's garage and listen and sometimes help with the chatter.
I wish it would have been a you tube series from the get go and the progress as it went along.
Joe probably has enough footage to make that happen, with the stuff Ethan has....but it would be tons of editing.
It's been quite exciting to watch it happen.

If it was anything like my own builds, it must have been quite a melodrama!
One small victory followed by 5 defeats, or something like that.
And every time I do something similar, at some point I ask myself why I've started this in the first place?
And then I figure I'm in too deep to just abandon the project. And if I do, every time I think of it it just hurts, so I jump back in the game.

I did shoot lots of footage during Ethan’s period of engineering development but what was really usable as a story is what I included in my video. We (Ethan and I) also had numerous discussions, sometimes bordering on arguments, about the direction of the project, but in the end, it was his baby, I was just happy to be there and watch it unfold.

I know that building things is always an adventure.
And when there are more than one people involved, it never quite turns out like planned (I should know as the few times I asked my dad to help build something, I've always had to cut apart one piece to modify it so it works to my specs).
