My wife says I need to shoot more color film in the tropics. Olympus XA with Fujifilm Superia X-Tra 400.
Palauan Brer, raft used for fishing near shore. You wouldn't want to take this out beyond the reef.

Bai ra Keai for the Aimeliik state. The trees are areca palm trees, this is where Betel nut comes from. If you've ever been to this part of the world, everyone chews Betel nut, even children. It's kind of like chewing tobacco.

These are flip flops and a few motorcycle helmets that washed up on the beach on Kayangel island. They also had a similar display of water bottles. I suppose if you lost a flip flop at the beach you could go there to see if they have it.

ah, the reddish orange stain of Betel...of which I have tried. Bleh!
The flipflops are kind of an in your face waste and ocean pollution marker of sorts. That's really eye opening. And to think these are just the ones from here. Wow. that's remarkable.

It's always fun dodging big red blobs of spit in parking lots. Almost every business has a no Betel nut sign, but that doesn't stop them.
The number of flip flops is especially remarkable when you consider they were all collected on Kayangel, an island that's only 1.5 miles at it's longest point. When we were fishing we pulled some Styrofoam from the water, it was a motorcycle helmet liner. The way the helmets are constructed they last a long time in the ocean.

I once heard a sailor who collected flip-flops from the ocean say that he's fished out thousands of them and has never been able to make a pair that fits together...

Have you tried the Betel nut Bryan? I am wondering what it could taste like as I have never heard of it.

No, it's disgusting. They wrap the nut in a leaf from the tree with slaked lime powder, then chew and spit. It turns their mouth and teeth bright red. It destroys their teeth and causes mouth cancer. It's also very addictive, like tobacco. Google images of Betel nut mouth.
Great studio shots Irv!

Lucky for me it's so far away... I would have been very tempted to sneak out with their Le Corbusier lounge chair ;D
Which, BTW, is gloriously comfortable albeit a bit on the narrow side.

Ooooh, those were nice Irv! No flipflop style there. ;)
