A million apologies to all concerned for the delay, but it's taken me a month to get episode 3 edited and uploaded. Normally it takes 4 days. Life's been a little mental over the last few weeks. Show notes not yet written, but it's available to download or play so go to it. Also,I'd appreciate any help you can be in publicising these podcasts via your own websites, other forums etc.
Thanks to Susan, Leon, Damion and Don for making the show a good one.

...hah! I think I tried at exactly the same time. Weird. Works now though whoever had the final 'click' ;D

Very Nice, Ed! And merry holidays to everyone. You might could check out Linda Connor's photography if you haven't yet, Ed. She always used printing out paper, gold toned I believe. She is one to schlep 8x10 cameras all over the world really and so all her prints are 8x10 contacts. Lovely really.

Thanks for the feedback and the POP tip, Gordon. I'll acquaint myself with Linda Connor's work ASAP.

I cannot get over how dreamy all of the boys voices sound. I had a moment....or two. Great fun listening in on again. Love these Pods. Please let Leon talk more for crissakes...haha.
-
The best one so far. Really like the discussion format and way the topic ranges through so many fascinating areas. Great stuff! Happy New Year!
-
A great listen thanks guys. Sat there at lunch on the last working day of the year, and wished I was able to participate. Some great ideas, and comments from all. Arigato. Skj.

A few serious topics covered which were very interesting and some nice light hearted touches which made it all a pleasure. Many thanks. Happy New Year to all.

...ha, id like to say i believe you, but lets not pretend the accent of my homeland (birmingham that is) sounds good. if it wasnt for that i could have had a career in TV.
lovely stuff though , cheers for the hard work Ed!

A really excellent show - well worth the effort everyone put into it.

I really appreciated the conversation about aesthetic / technique vs. content. Also the thoughts about toy camera usage... all very relevant things I have been wrestling with lately...

Finally got to download the huge file!
Was a nice show again.
For some odd reason, when the discussion on the bad picture with caption vs. good picture debate got on, I couldn't help but think about Marshall McLuhan's (http://www.marshallmcluhan.com/main.html) famous quote:
The Medium is the message.
This is actually food for thought and could very well be the starting message of a great debate!
Ed: I was wondering what program you use to encode the podcast to MP3? (OK, the geek in me is talking again)

All, glad that #3 has been well received. Many thanks for all the comments. We're recording #4 in the next week or so. I'm looking forward to it a lot as it should include a report from Susan about her experiences at this year's Photo LA (last weekend).
Francois: Geek-to-geek I use Pamela to record the Skype call (I originally tried HotRecorder, but didn't get on with it) and then I edit using Adobe Audition. This has all been on Windows so far; Vista up until now, but XP for the next few as I had to rebuilt my laptop thanks to a dodgy Mandriva install! I was hoping to switch this sort of activity to Linux, but I get so little time to do the editing that I don't have time to move onto new apps at the moment. Maybe later in the year.
When the whole thing's edited I save it as a 64kbps MP3 (which seems to be the standard for a lot of voice podcasts) and post it to the website. The Podcast page is run on WordPress (my blog software of choice) using the PodPress plugin to display the audio content in a pleasant way.
#3 ran into some problems because I accidentally deleted some of the original chat from the introductions section and had to re-record it by myself a couple of weeks later. Unfortunately I had a cold by then (i.e. croaky voice) and had to use a different PC, a different mic and anything-but-high-fidelity Windows Sound Recorder...which is why the sound quality fluctuates a lot at the start.
Next step is to get the podcast available via iTunes. Hope to have this set up for #4.

I've recently played with Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) (I know, I'm audacious when it comes to using open source stuff :) )
Quite impressive for something totally free. It uses the Lame MP3 encoder. The stable version only allows fixed bitrate encoding. I did try the beta... crashy crashy but looks promising with a ton of options (and like all geeks, the more buttons to press the merrier :) ).
I am wondering if you ever tried using Variable Bit Rate encoding?
Does wonders keeping quality way up and file size way down. It varies the quality according to the compressibility of the audio. I use VBR for all my music and am very happy with it.

Great episode, loved the format cant wait for more. Its about time there was a good photo pod-cast.
Thanks for pointing me on to POP, I cant wait to try it.

Yeah, I've used it for music too.It does a good job. Hadn't thought about trying it out on the podcast. Will run one off that way for #4 and see how it compares with the standard 64kbps.
We're recording #4 tomorrow night, BTW. Looking forward to it.

Hope you have fun (and no cold ;) )

Ohhh. I cannot wait. Each listen we become closer and closer...and it's like hearing The Housemartins, Happy Hour!! Again, and again and again. Leon sort of resembles what's his name from the HM's too. :-*
