Just like vinyl records.

Film is the vinyl record of photography.

I truly hope you didn't see the following joke in your post - how great a world it woudl be if the double-entendre was not intended.

(here we go ....)

yes - they definitely go around, and around, and around, and around etc ad infinitum (until you press the turntable stop button)

though they act like film hasn't been used since 1953. retro? digital cameras have only been so popular for the past 5-6 years.

i had to laugh at the presenter stating that lomography used simple, low cost cameras.

"WHAT will they think of next?" That was like watching a PBS school newsflash from 1982.

Interesting that one of the related stories listed there is, 'Kodachrome May Be Dead but Polaroid is Back', talking about The Impossible Project. Kodachrome (& Polaroid) was all about the popping color and as much as I like that TIP are trying, they haven't yet come up with any film that has anything even close to popping color yet. So far, all the color I've seen from them looks like long expired film (which actually has made me wonder if that is what they are selling).

But as for photographers going back to film, that has been happening for a few years. And anythign that encourages anyone to buy rolls of film, I'm all for because that makes it more likely that it'll be around as long as I want it.

interesting vid Ann, although I feel somehow 'quaintified' in a nice way ;D

Lomography is a great sound-bite for a generation that likes to define the mundane with hip labels.
But its a positive 'film' about film with a spin that may interest the ipod generation.
Ranting old git mode off...  ;)

"Too much numbers and all these really confusing bits".

That sums up how I feel about this photography lark.

sorry moominsean i see you got ther first, still whatever the reason for this aparrent "renaissance" of something that has been gone for barely anytime anyway, its still a good thing, i have faith in the film industry, many lines of film and stuff may be going out of production but i think its just moving and shifting, I think we have many years of joyous filmwasting ahead of us....

ok cup half full mode off...

bloode lomography and their insanely expensive cameras.... :-P

I wonder if this is a kind of arcticle where the company (in this particular case here, lomography...) pay for having this sort of arcticle published. Some bits from this video made me laugh! But in fact I should cry...

I'd love to know the numbers?

How many rolls of film sold this year compared to last 3 years or so?

this is an article in the NYT from 2007, but have sales increased since then?

even though some lines have been discontinued since then would sales
of less specialist films have gone up . . .?

Precisely!!

And Francois - yes, it must seem all the more novel to those who see it as some 'antique' old-timey concept! :)

Ok... allow me to digress from the original post here - (and bear with me... I'll be making a point):

I remember as a kid, going to one of my brother's cub scouts events where the father and son had to bake a cake and then each pair brought their cakes in to be auctioned off and sold to someone else.  To this day I remember with a smile this one pair had frosted their cake while it was still hot (haha, what do boys know in the kitchen?? - j/k).  This resulted in pulling the chocolate cake apart and having it mix in with the vanilla frosting.

So what did they do? Did they start over, correct the flaws? Oh no... they capitalized on it and took the stance of raffling off a rare delight called a Speckled Chocolate Cake.  Much attention was given to the 'prized' speckling... Oooohs and Ahhhss and a bidding frenzy ensued...

.....

...........

Could this be what the Impossible Project is doing?  I love 'em, but I sometimes feel offended by what sometimes feels like is advertising directed toward village idiots, easily persuaded to pay premium dollar for a beta product.

Excellent story.

I can imagine this being taught in college marketing classes.

Kind of much to do about nothing. The video as of yesterday had less than 400 views.

Everyone needs content... whether valid or invalid.

However, I do think there is a silver lining to the popularity of digital... especially DSLRs. First, the whole world now gets somewhat better image quality and is probably taking more pictures ... as a whole.

But with all the flocking to DSLRs, I'm stumbling upon people who because of their ability to all of a sudden capture reasonably good photos, get bit by the bug and want to do more and want to do it better.

So sure, there are the lazy consumers who now don't have to go to the drugstore... though I suspect in 20 years they're going to wish they AT LEAST had a shoebox of prints since very few of them preserve their digital memories properly. But, there is also a new crop of genuinely interested "photographers" that do want to learn and do want to get it right. Will they go to film? Probably not... but will they respect those that came before them and learn the proper way?... I think so.

The vinyl come back reffered is the classic LP and not the 12" singles, the latter it's been replaced by mp3 that allows djs using softwares in their laptops.

Almost every new cd released are also coming on vinyl even if it's for a limited period of time, not to mention that some of them are only available on vinyl.

Hah! Mauricio and I have the same record player ;-)  My son uses it now.  As for film, the two films I totally love but have gone by the wayside are Polaroid 665 & 55.  The rest are all good and fun but those two are like bread and water ;-)

I haven't heard a squeak out of TIP about either, except their high prices on dead stock for these...
