Title: Late Spring in Manhattan
Post by: 02Pilot on June 20, 2015, 11:39:04 PM
After the worst of the winter recedes, and especially after a rough winter season, New Yorkers crawl out of their tiny, overpriced apartments, blink a few times, and proceed to live completely outdoors as much as humanly possible for the next several months. I don't live in the city, but I know it well enough to figure that there's photographic opportunities to be had while everyone is still transitioning into summer mode, so off I went.

I've been working on themes of negative space and isolation within urban settings for a while now, and I've also been increasingly interested in graphical compositions, all of which you'll see below. Everything shot with a Leica IIIc and Summitar on HP5+ developed in Caffenol C-H(RS).

Some excellent work here. I love the shot of the legs sticking out and the perspective on the row of bicycles is a fresh take on a very familiar subject.

Thanks, Adam. I always try to shoot from unusual perspectives when I can - the High Line along the West Side (from which several of these shots were taken) is really good for this. Next time I'm there I want to take a longer lens.

I finally looked at these on a decent monitor and they're absolutely fantastic. Excellent theme and perfectly executed.

Thanks - I know from my own experience that a good screen can make a big difference. I'm going to order a set of prints to see how they look in that format - I'm hoping they translate well....

It's always a great pleasure to look at your photographs - excellent in every way ...
Composition, exposure, processing and presentation - great !
My favorites are the first and third from the second set ( people on the fire exit stairs and Artichoke Basille's Pizza) and the fourth from the last set (people in a park).
Thank you for sharing !

Thanks very much for your kind words. I've been actively working on composition in street shooting, so I was happy to see it noted; I was pleased with how this set came out.
