Anyone else having avatar problems?
« on: March 30, 2015, 08:34:00 AM »
Today when I tried to change avatar the forum just keeps resetting to "No avatar".
I've tried several different URLs without avail.

Ed, maybe you could check on that? And if able add so one could upload a small picture as it can be tricky to get a good URL for some?

Well, I didn't find anything amiss. I changed my profile picture, saved it and then changed it back again.

Yeah, and I saw that hair pulling moment ;)
as did I :D

okay, I sorted it out now. forgot for a moment that one should just take out the s from https when using a image link from flickr nowadays.
I thought I ruled out that it was flickr related when I tried linking an image from tumblr. but maybe it's the same there.

anyway, it's sorted so let's end this section of timewasters ;)

Well, for the avatar you can store it on Flickr or Imageshack (or just about any other hosting site). Just make sure the link you give it is just http and not https

As for the files, you can upload jpeg files that are under 200kb size (I make mine 198kb because I discovered that some programs cut corners and show 200kb and the server then refuses them).

Just click on Attachments and other options right under here (when you are writing a reply)
Browse to get the file, click (more attachments) to put another file.

You seem be linking from Flickr but I don't see any public photos on your Fickr so maybe you need to make it public first. Not sure that's the issue but might be.

Also the link you are using comes up with a 404 error if I put it into a browser so maybe the link is wrong as well.

I experimented a bit. If you want to use a Flickr image as an avatar, here's how.

The image doesn't need to be made public on Flickr.

Open the image in Flickr you want to use and click on the 'share' symbol.

Choose the 'HTML embed' tab and copy the code to the clipboard. Paste the code into Notepad (or any text editor). You will get something like this:

<a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" data-footer="true"  href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/ridgeway-photographer/19496070468/in/photostream" title="Filmwasters avatar"><img src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/335/19496070468_87ea325507_o.jpg" width="48" height="48" alt="Filmwasters avatar"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Copy the link that starts 'https://farm1.staticflickr.com/' etc. and and ends in '.jpg' and paste that into the avatar URL field in your profile. Before saving it, remove the 's' from 'https://' so it becomes 'http://'. Save it and you should be done.

Oh my.  :o lol Thanks, I'll give that a try. Yeah I was trying to use something from my Flickr page which, no, is not set to be public. I'd try uploading from my computer and that hadn't worked. I appreciate the help.

Thanks Peter.  I know this is old...but after struggling with the fact we can't upload the avatar, your post solved my problem.  Now everyones screen can be graced with my awful mug!  😁
