Huawei photo challenge
« on: July 28, 2018, 10:23:46 AM »
Did anyone see this:
https://www.japancamerahunter.com/2018/07/op-ed-human-judging-huaweis-ai-judged-photo-contest/#.W1vlSwHLopI.twitter

AI judged photographs. The entries are utter horse$hit.

So I thought I would present this: (A scanned polaroid of a model of the moon)
Everything should be tried once except incest and folk dancing.

Might as well do it. The image is simple enough for ai to understand it.

It’s probably to his credit that the reviewer, Michael Nguyen, chose to quote Blake rather than use the obvious cliché having to do with the eye of the beholder.  AI no doubt will become more discerning as the number of photos made daily careens exponentially.  What number comes after a kagilion-kagilion?

I don't know but my best bet is that the final winner will be a cat photo  ;D

There was a cartoon in The New Yorker this week that seems applicable here.

Groan. Somebody please give me a print to hold or a photobook to read with high production values, thoughtful layout and artistic merit. If I then decide I don't like the work or don't understand it, at least I have experienced its full potential. Anyone want to see their fave photographer's work compressed onto a phone screen or a FB page? No thanks. Not for me.

What I find funny about these algorithms is that usually, you send them a picture by one of the greatest from the past and it almost always gets a sh** rating!

They should rename it "the photo which matches the most boring and most often instagramed scene in the world" because that's literally what it is.

Or just name it to the "send us your favorite cat photo" contest :)

You might wonder why I keep talking about cats? Well it's because scientist once did an experiment in computer vision to see if it could differentiate between various animals in random photos and to their surprise, the first thing it learned was how to identify a cat... But I guess that's because there are more cat photos online than pictures of horny lizards...

How would I distinguish between a horny lizard and one that has no sexual desires, much less an AI bot?  :o
