Gallery hit list
« on: June 26, 2006, 12:40:51 AM »
I was thinking it would be good to pool our resources and make a list of galleries that either deal exclusively in photography or are at least  photo friendly.
In Houston we have a few
Watermark Gallery
John Cleary Gallery
Houston Ccenter for Photography
Fotofest at Vine Street Studios
De Santos Gallery
and Sicardi Gallery ( but they seem to mostly show South American artists)

Also there is Anya Tish gallery- she shows all medias and specialiizes in Eastern European and Middle Eastern artists

Hi Laura:
If you go to www.photography-guide.com, you'll find tons of listings.  It's a great resource.

We should look for  galleries that actually take submissions!  Anyone know of any European galleries?

I was trying to find one in my local area (Birmingham - UK)  its impossible,  The Ikon gallery only deals with already established artists, and the MAC  will only deal with local artisists and images of local interest -which was no good for me at the time!

second city my arse!

The Elana Dorfman photos at Schneider gallery are really creepy.

PS
The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago has three photo exhibits hanging right now. Catherine Opie, Wolfgang Tillmans and someone else.

Damion - it's no better here in Manchester. But you could try contacting the Rhubarb Rhubarb people if you're still in Brum, it's the sort of thing they're supposed to help with, and I know they're moving into gallery / print sale stuff as well at the moment.

You're all lucky if you have at least one in your city...

Here, in Montreal (Canada), we used to have 1 gallery specialised in photography...
(For those who don't know Montreal, it's 1 million people big...)
The gallery closed down because they were not able to sell any prints.
They tried selling Lomo LC-A's on the side to cover cost... and sold none (people were saying: "Duh... it's not even digital")
They moved to a small side street, were opened on appointment only...
Last that I heard from them, they closed down for good...

But on the good side, the city has plenty of free exhibition spaces opened to any artform.

I think Britain still has the upper hand compared to my province when it comes down to photography.
