Yet another contraption coming-up
« on: July 06, 2021, 09:27:20 PM »
Yes, it's official, I've lost my mind a long time ago and I think this project is yet another proof of this  ;D
I had this broken Chinon CE-4 that I got for really cheap. I wanted to fix it as it was in really nice shape but when taking it apart some wires broke and I couldn't find where they were supposed to be connected. Bummer.
Then I thought of something I saw on the Homemade Camera Podcast and decided to give it a go. I set to convert it into an x-pan like camera...
Took me a week to figure out how the heck this thing was put together. It had everything from strangely placed screws to glue and structural tape.
But I managed to take it down to just the film advance.
I cut the film window as large as it would go.
I designed a front plate for it that I still need to fit.
I need to figure-out the top cover, the viewfinder, the lens cone, the light leaks...
I already figured out the lens and shutter, it's going to be a 90mm Ansco Viking from the 20's. This should give me about the same as a 59mm on 24x36.
Film gate is 24x60, so not quite as wide as the x-Pan but still considerable.

I'm currently printing a test front plate for it.

After three attempts, I think I have a fitting test front plate. Now to do some minor mods to it and print in black.

OK, made some more progress on it.
The front plate cover is now final.
The camera is light sealed using aluminum tape.
I made a cover for the battery compartment.
These were all fiddly parts to make as I needed to align a bunch of stuff using only my own measurements.
The rest should be a bit easier in a sense.
I did work on the lens cone and it's going to be a bit of a nightmare to get right...

Yesterday I started working on the top cover.
Lots of fiddly bits there too.. lucky for me that I have plenty of white filament, I can write the mods to do directly on the part with a sharpie.
