Title: A visit of Indie Filmlabs
Post by: Francois on June 14, 2021, 03:44:45 PM
I got this suggested to me this morning.
It's a visit of the Indie Filmlabs.
While the start is pretty boring (we already know what he explains), the rest is really fun.

Enjoy!

What a great 'behind the scenes' look at the work flow of this lab. Fascinating :D

Looks like a cool place to work at too. I just hope they have good ventilation in the processor room.

Very enlightening. And quite complex. We often comment on how film cameras are much simpler than digital and that can be true. The reality of course is that the flexible strip of 36 one use color sensors is enormously complex both in manufacturing and processing. So that, with film, the complexity is in the background so to speak. Whereas with our digital marvel’s (which most of us ‘filmwasters’ own....but don’t talk about) contain so much of the capability in the box in our hand.
Optical printing of negatives has disappeared, but I guess that happened even before digital came to dominate the market.
Gratifying to see young folks with so much passion for the medium.

There are still places that do optical printing in color.
I just saw a short doc about Chicago's last film lab and the owner still does it all by hand.
I'll try to find it again and post it here.
