Alpa SLRs .... How Much???
« on: January 27, 2012, 12:23:18 PM »
has anyone ever seen one of these?  They command really high prices.  I wonder what makes them so valuable? I'd not heard of them until today. I thought Alpa only made LF cameras.

I've seen a couple "in the flesh" (so to speak) down the years and always I regarded them as pug-ugly. Having seen that eBay auction, I've changed my opinion somewhat; I now think they're pug-ugly and massively overpriced.... :o

Supposed to be decent kit, though...

Pug Ugly? Better than Pig-Iggly I suppose?

They want to be decent kit - I'd expect it to take the shot, develop the film & print the negs at that price!

They are Swiss made, were only made in limited numbers, superb engineering (think watches!) AND very collectable which all equals $$$$$ £££££ €€€€€€! I have Ivor Matanle's book on classic SLR's which documents their history and models/lenses produced.

oh, I think they were a high precision, low production rate kind of brand.

reading up on them now I find these lines interesting:
"In true Swiss fashion, each camera was individually crafted. Thus, production was low, but quality and prices were high. Even these days, collectible Alpa cameras can fetch quite a high auction price.[1] It is estimated that as few as 40,000 cameras of all models of Alpa were made during the company's 40 year history."

"Pignons S.A. never aimed at producing cameras in large quantities, but rather at quality and they often made cameras to special order, incorporating features as requested by the customer. Lenses were subcontracted to several well-known manufactures"

"Unfortunately, Alpa didn't have the resources to keep up with the technological advances that the main stream camera companies were introducing in the 1970s and sales began to decline. There is argument about whether the lack of technological "innovation" was due to lack of money, or actually a choice made by the company about whether the automation brought about by other companies was desirable."

my guess it that they might be bought and sold more like collectibles nowadays, just because of the rarity

Attractive to people with far too much disposal income and far too much shelf space to fill.

Actually, Alpa is still in business. While they stopped producing SLR's, they produce a very tasty looking modular camera. Everything is made to your specs. They build the cameras one by one. Think of it as the Rolls Royce of cameras.

The bodies are made from a single piece machined aircraft grade aluminum. Since it's not molded, it is very stable under extreme temperature shifts. The back can fit the film or digital back of the brand of your choice. You can have a shifting lens mount if you want. The lens board holder clamps are made of reinforced polycarbonate. Thumb screws are gold plated to ensure oxidation free operation. The grips are made from a variety of woods of your choice. If you have a chunk of wood you would like to have made as grips, just send them the log and they will cut and machine it to size...

Pretty incredible.

I've seen a couple of the more recent cameras of that company in the flesh.
They made an incredible rotating medium format camera which produces amazing panos.
And also, a architecture photographer demonstrated in one class i had an alpa modular system used with digiback.
They are overpriced. Still nice though.

What's all that talk about Switzerland ! Be careful ;)

If you need to ask the price you can't afford it (which means me!)

Some of the early 35 slrs had both reflex and coupled rangefinder focusing:

This oddity makes me like them

I was only being half-serious myself. Living in Switzerland, I can't help but smile at those clichés which are partly true.

A former colleague of mine has a sister who lives outside Zurich. Every time he went to see her, he used to come back home depressed at how down-at-heel the UK is compared to where he'd just been. He used to joke that even the dirt on the streets of Zurich was clean..... ;D

A older friend of mine gave me all his analogue gear several years back when he switched to digital because of vision deterioration: complete darkroom, Graflex, and an recently serviced Alpa with 4 lenses.   I looked up the value of the Alpa and gave it back to him in good faith. At that time the body and lenses I had we're valued at well over 4,000 USD. WOW. Of course any camera is only worth what someone will pay for it ;-)

My understanding is Alpa made the 1st SLR camera though wikipedia says it was an Exakta. I can't recall the model I had, it may have been the 9D though.  But it was the most precision camera I've yet to see or use (I ran one roll through it before discovering it's value).  Are they worth the price?  Yes, in the same way a Leica M2, M3, or M4 are. They are rock solid (and weigh a lot BTW) and are engineered like a swiss watch.  Like a Leica (that's a funny phrase) - you either love the Alpa or hate it. and if you love it you gotta have it.....

The Alpa was 1st and foremost designed to be a scientific camera and not a photographer's camera, although it did spill into the consumer market to some small degree.

@ Gregor.

Well done for handing it back, Gregor, that's not something many would do.

I'm getting the impression that Alpas are a bit over-engineered for their intended function. Not always a bad thing as, so long as they're not brittle, they should outlive most of us. The difference between Leica and Alpa, at least for me, is that Leicas are designed to be used extensively as tools. Okay, they've made a few dubious gold-plated and chintzy "special editions" to suit the "more money than sense" brigade but, for the most part, Leicas are great workhorses.

The coat of arms on the front is an interesting touch.  Not to mention the reptile skin - presumably for that price it is taken from finest, most endangered crocodilian species.

accessories by Riex, on Flickr

This was taken on an Alpa 10D. I suspect that person might not have been sober before making the purchase of the camera.

There are more pictures of Alpa cameras than pictures taken with Alpa cameras.
