2011 Calendar (and apologies)
« on: December 07, 2010, 08:34:10 AM »
http://www.lulu.com/product/calendar/filmwasters-2011/14244289

I'm an idiot and apparently it's too late to order for Christmas with the cheapest shipping option  :'( :'( I currently blame the post and weather as I ordered mine on the 28th of November and it shipped on the 1st and it's still not here yet. I wanted to make sure it printed okay because my calendar didn't have a black background but since it's still not here and time is getting tight I'll have to post this anyway :/

You can click on the Preview link under the picture to get a preview of all the months.

Sorry I ruined your Christmas gifts, guys  :-\  :'(

Edit: GAH! Post turned up. Calendar is here; It looks beautiful  ;D

Well, let's not be too hasty, people. I have met Heather and between you and me she is a bit of an idiot....oh wait...ahem...that damn Wikileaks material gets everywhere.

 ;D ;D :D

Seriously though, no worries at all, Heather. You stepped up with a very generous offer and have produced a fine-looking FW 2011 calendar. I appreciate some people may want to/have wanted to buy them as Christmas gifts, but the main thing is that it's ready before March 2011 - which is about as early as it would have been if I'd put the thing together.

Onwards and upwards. A huge thank you to Heather from me and the rest of the Filmwasters.

Correction, the last Filmwasters meet I vaguely organised ended up in you NOT meeting me the last time  ::) You're not helping with the "not an idiot" persona I'm trying to cultivate here  ;)

And yes, at least it is finished before January 2011 too.... so if not for Christmas, I'm sure you can get it before 1 January 2011 and admire Francois's pretty icy berries  :o

No worries Heather (I've been around too many Australians lately). Thanks for putting the calendar together. I've ordered one (they are quite cheap I think).

Heather

I think you've done a fantastic job with this and given that you're probably a very busy person with a lots of other things demanding your attention, I think you've turned all of this round in pretty quick time.  Not only that, but if you pay just a little bit more for p&p then it looks like it probably will arrive for Christmas anyway.

Anyway, I'm so pleased with it that I've ordered five copies.  The images, especially some of the colour ones,  are really beautiful and it will be a real pleasure getting to look at one in my kitchen, study, bedroom, bathroom and hallway.  See how good I think it is? ;D

Big, big thanks

Graham

Thanks guys :)

Actually I'm not that busy in all honesty but coordinating with other people is always a bit slower than working solo.

I'm mostly replying to point out that I make zero money from the filmwasters calendar (but obviously do make a tiny amount on the cyanotype calendars) so this is just a joy-spreading operation.

Oh and a little future reminder, if you have an awesome photo in the next year, scan it in at high res! When I say high res go the whole hog and go for something 3000x3000+ pixels - it'll make the job easier next year and if you guys ever think of making your own calendar or online book, then you don't have to go through the hassle of rescanning everything (heck I had to reprint something then scan it for my calendar).
Terrabyte external harddrives are fairly low in price these days so there's less excuse for not enough space for large scans. end of friendly but nagging reminder  :-*

Mine is already ordered...
But I was wondering about how many pictures you had to sift through to get to the final pick?

Ask Ed and Leon. I just got a selection of a couple of photos per season and then it was up to me to arrange them and chose which photos went to which month, format/layout, trying to figure out what important dates to go on it, uploading it, and poking Lulu into making it.

Actually, it's worth pointing out that the process was as follows:

  • You lot sent in your wonderful photos
  • Leon went through them and made a first cut then disappeared back into his Law studies
  • I went through Leon's choices and made a 'final' cut
  • I sent the images along with the photographer's names and which season the photos should go in to Heather
  • She then hassled a few people for higher res images, did all of the layout stuff and decided which months to put the snaps against based on their subject matter, colour palette and shape and size
  • She did it really quickly and with no small amount of style
  • Bl**dy good show

It also worth pointing out that this is not a profit generation exercise. Lulu prices aren't cheap, but it's the only realistic way for this type of setup to proceed and we don't put any extra fees on top of Lulu's basic price. I'm sure most, if not all, of you know that Filmwasters isn't about making money. It's funded by 5 of us and we don't raise money through the site or merch to pay for hosting etc.

I'm really pleased that a number of you have bought copies and I hope you enjoy them throughout 2011. Go team!

Just to let you all know, my five copies arrived in the post yesterday - well in time for distribution before Christmas.  They look really nice - well laid out and, except for the blacks, pretty good colour reproduction.  The FW's logo on the front looks particulalry cool - worth the price of the calender on its own in my opinion.

Big thanks again to Heather, and everyone else who contributed images or time and energy.

I took delivery of the 2011 FW Calendar this morning.  Although I intended it as a present to me, and didn't really care when it might have arrived, it did arrive comfortably before this coming Saturday.  It will grace a wall of my office when I get back to it, at the end of January.

Many Thanks to the contributors, Leon, Ed, and, especially, Heather, who most certainly is not an idiot.
