Title: Darkroom labs - in UK?
Post by: Suzi Livingstone on February 25, 2011, 05:17:26 PM
Anyone know of any professional photo labs that use traditional hand printing rather than digi in UK?

I know there are several really good ones stateside.. I'm looking for something closer to home..

Thanks in advance..  ;D

(PS I need an image printed 14 x 14 inches)..

just seen digitalab offer a hand printing service, will check them out.

This guy operates from Bath http://www.argent2.co.uk/index.html (http://www.argent2.co.uk/index.html) He used to work for a commercial Lab in Bristol before it was swallowed up by the big boys. I have heard good things and have used him for E6.

I've heard lots of nice things about the work done by the lab at Silverprint, near Waterloo Station. As with all such work, I can't imagine it'll be cheap but their reputation is excellent.

I don't know if you are looking for colour or Black & white Suzi, but Metro in London do hand printing of both. Theyre probably not cheap though !

I used to use Metro for rush jobs when they had a lab behind Oxford Street, no not cheap but good. I do miss that Metro though because I used to pop by and buy up a lot of their expired film at very reasonable discounts.

I don't take my colour 120 films anywhere but Metro, even though I have to travel a bit. The quality is excellent !

Suzi: Leon is totally your best bet for prints, so well done on making the right decision. If you need really large ones though I can recommend Darkside Photographic near old Street (http://www.darksidephoto.co.uk/ (http://www.darksidephoto.co.uk/)) who are the best and nicest lab I've ever dealt with. Haven't been there for a couple of years, but used them exclusively for the 5 preceding years.

Mauricio: Darkside are great for processing too. I used to get a 'special price' which was very nice, but I'm sure they'll be cheaper than Metro even if you pay their standard prices. I have used Metro occasionally over the years, but find their prices just too high. Might be worth checking out Darkside.

Thanks Ed, I may need a few large colour prints later this year so I'll definitely check out Darkside.

Anthony, the owner is a lovely guy so try and have a chat with him. He's been around for years and knows a lot of cool photogs (e.g. Simon Norfolk is a mate of his). Darkside used to do (maybe still does) all of the printing for Magnum UK, and he's done a lot of the prints that you see in places like the Photogs' Gallery.

Thanks Ed for the tip... Just checked the price at the Darkside and they do for half of the price ! I'm building up a reasonable amount of colour films to take at once... again thanks ! ;)
