UK FW Spring Day Out - AVEBURY
« on: May 07, 2015, 02:09:04 PM »
So, AVEBURY is the majority choice from the previous thread

1. The poll allows for two choices each and will run for 10 days from today (7th May)
2. The UK half-term holidays are the week commencing 25th May (if that's relevant to anyone planning holidays)
3. The summer solstice is the 21st June and Avebury isn't that far from Stonehenge and likely to be mega-busy

Hopefully, there's enough options and time available to ensure a good turn-out.

Funny, I might actually be able to make May 31st depending on my tour schedule! (I'll either be in London or Amsterdam on that day)

I can make any week except the 21st so I don't want to influence the result by voting for two days only if I can make others.

But if Satish can make the 31st, that get's my vote.

Although I've picked two Sundays, that's just to indicate which weekends are possible for me.

I can do any days but would prefer to avoid 20/21 June as Avebury will probably be mobbed (Summer Solstice).

It seems silly to vote given how easy I am with the dates -  don't want to stay the choice for not reason.

Right; just back from a couple of days working in Manchester so it's time to see if we can get this sorted.

On the basis that most have voted for the weekend of 27/28th June (and Sundays tend to be preferred by most) and others have said they can make most weekends in June, I'm recommending we go for as many as possible meeting up at an appropriate spot in / near Avebury on the morning of 28th June 2015.

I don't know the place at all so I'd be grateful for any guidance on where to meet / park cars, etc.  I gather it's likely to be busy at the stones themselves, so we may need a "Plan B" up our collective sleeves (no, not the whiny songster, an alternative if it's too busy to get the shots we want).   The following might give some guidance to what's relatively nearby.

http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/avebury

Then there's food and drink.  Anyone know a good local hostelry that can might accommodate us?

Useful info at http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/avebury/

There's a car park (£7 per day), a pub and a NT cafe.

The car park is at SN8 1RD.

I'm afraid I can't make that weekend.  :( But I missed the vote so it's my own fault.

I'd love to come along, but with my first child due on 24th June my chances of getting a pass to travel halfway across the country are less than zero!  Maybe next time.

24th June is absolutely the best day of the year to be born.

I may try and pop along, I like Avebury.

Lacock Abbey isnt a million miles away from Avebury. Might be nice for some inventor-of-neg-pos-photography goodness after lunch?

Great minds think alike, Leon  8)  I was having a squint at Google Maps earlier today and noticed that Lacock isn't too far away from Avebury.  I went to Lacock a few years ago and it's a lovely place and, understandably (even bearing in mind it's run by the National Trust), they were fairly relaxed about visitors taking photos.

Okay peeps, 28th June isn't that far away and I was wondering who's able to commit to this photographic extravaganza and where / when we might meet up.

Lara and I have booked a B&B and are making a weekend of it, so we'll be in the vicinity at whatever time anyone / everyone can make it.  In all likelihood, we'll aim to be there as early as possible.

My instincts tell me that an early arrival would be best generally - not only to get the best of the light but also to get the best of what parking spaces there are.  Apparently, it's £7 to park all day and spaces are limited - with no "on-street parking" allowed in Avebury or immediate surrounding villages.

I'd like to be there for sun up but as that's about 04:55 it will need a miracle. Might be best to arrange to meet at the cafe at, say, 10:00 (which is when it opens).

It's not the same anymore. Back in the day it was Mike Pitts's 'The Stones Cafe'. Great veggie food and soups and stoneware pottery . Now it is all pre-packed sandwiches, dry scones and disposable cups. :(

Sounds like a reasonable idea, Peter, but I wonder if the parking availability will be gone by then.  If we haven't heard anything or seen anyone by 10:00, we'll aim to be at the cafe around 10:00.  However, although Lara and I won't be there for sun-up, I'll be aiming for as soon afterwards as possible.

The car park is actually quite big and I wouldn't think it'll be a problem. If the weather's good I'll be aiming to get there early as well.

It looks like I am probably not going to be able to make this day now - sorry all. It is Canterbury Folk weekend and I forgot that I had promised to see some friends play on the 28th.

I hope you all have a good day and I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures from the day.

best

Okay chaps - just over a week to go.  Therefore a quick "bump" to check who is definitely going to be there.  Nothing's changes as far as Lara and I are concerned - so who else is gonna be there?

Suggest we exchange mobile phone numbers and email addresses to ensure we can let one another know when we arrive, etc.

I'm 60/40 in favour of being there at the moment. I have had absolutely no time with any camera for the last few months and definitely need to get myself out and about.

Also, if I do manage to turn up, I'd like to take some portraits if anybody is up for it.

Do it.  Because re portraits I'm likely to do the same.

I wonder if anyone has this experience, which seems to happen all the time when faced with one of my cameras ...

"Oh, no, I don't want to be in a photograph."

"Don't worry, it's only black and white."

"Oh, that's OK then."

I get some of my best shots that way.   ;D
