Title: I have just joined.
Post by: Offertonhatter on June 29, 2012, 07:34:17 PM
Hello to all.
I was recommended by another member to join this forum, so I decided to join.

I'm Iain and I live in Stockport, UK.
I have enjoyed photography for many years, and I am lucky to have many cameras in many formats. (too many many's - sorry  ;D)
Although I use digital a lot, having a DSLR (Pentax) I have recently rediscovered film again. I can assure you that will be the last time I mention the D word on here.

So, what film gear do I have?
Well apart from a few compact cameras that were being thrown out by work due to changes in format, I do have the following that do get used:-
Olympus Trip 35 (bargain at £4 and works a treat)
Praktica MTL-5B (my first SLR camera, bought new for my 15th birthday)
Pentax MZ-5n and MZ-50 AF SLR's (former from new, latter second hand a year later)
Zenit (given to me)
Pentax Spotmatic F (only bought last week and getting used)
Rolleiflex F F3.5 Schneider lens (again a bargain at £4)
Bronica ETRS (again given to me - how lucky am I?)

I only put my first roll of 120 film through the Rollei, and I was astounded at the quality. As I was with a recent Studio shoot where I used the MZ-5n with Reala film in it.

I do have a flickr account which most of the images have been created by the D word, there are now an increasing number of shots done  with film.

I am looking forward to reading the threads and hopefully gain guidance on some technical aspects, or issues with my film kit, and get inspired by fellow members.

Thanks for reading.

Iain

Welcome Iain, great to have you on board!

The D word is, unlike some other forums, not a sin here, just remember that work just needs to be originated on film that's all... the more the better!!

Paul, you mentioned the ¨D¨ letter. I am afraid you will have to give all you equipment to the member that Immediately replied after you, which I am afraid it´s me  :-X

Welcome Iain, sure you will enjoy the place!  ;D

Thanks Paul for the welcome. At least the D word is not off limits, but I will using it sparingly.

For those who are interested, I have added a set within my flickr stream that is dedicated to film shots. There is not much there at the moment, but it will increase accordingly.

Welcome Iain.

Yep, as Paul Mitchell says, most of us have digital kit and enjoy using it to varying degrees but we limit this forum solely to posting photos taken on film - though you can post process them however you like.

It's a great bunch of gals and guys and I'm sure you'll fit in fine and enjoy your time with us.

All the best. Paul.

Welcome Iain.

It looks like you're going to fit in nicely with all those cameras in your photo-pockets :)

If you haven't done so already, it's worth taking a bit of time to read a few areas of the site to get the background and purposes of the site:

http://www.filmwasters.com/about.html (http://www.filmwasters.com/about.html)

and most importantly:

http://www.filmwasters.com/forum/index.php?topic=70.0 (http://www.filmwasters.com/forum/index.php?topic=70.0)

These links should explain our position on digital - whilst we mostly love the D word, we just dont talk about it here.  It like a dirty secret that we keep locked away  - we all know that we do it, but we dont tell each other.  Instead, there is an undercurrent of secret winks, knowing looks and strange handshakes :)

Looking forward to seeing some pics from you in the weekend threads.

Also ... dont forget to take a look at the other areas:

Hello Ian  :)

I'm a new member myself and I can honestly say that this group is the most encouraging, knowledgeable and supportive photography groups out there.  I'm a newbie to photography (at least new to taking it seriously) and none of my questions have ever been dismissed.

So welcome - you'll love it here!

Hey Iain!

I'm pretty new here, too, but from digging around the archives, I think you'll find this place is a treasure trove of information and inspiration.

I learned photography on my dad's old Nikon FE2, which is still going strong! I moved on to digital and then drifted back to film as my gear quickly went obsolete. I started picking up used film cameras in thrift shops and flea markets, which renewed by passion for photography. Something about these cams being more machine than computer, you know? Lately I've been using a lot of plastic, toy cameras but here's a list of what I've shot with this past year or so:

Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim;
Vivitar PN2011;
Superheadz Golden Half;
Minolta Hi-matic 7s;
Minolta AF-C;
Nikon FE2;
Polaroid Sun 660;
Argus Argoflex E

The Argoflex was my first venture into medium format and I love it!

Welcome!

Hello Iain and Tani - it's always great to get new blood on FW. I hope you'll have a great time.

Iain: before we go further it's vital that we clear up one point....seeing as how Big Paul recommended us to you we should establish where you stand on what's become known as, 'the Rush issue'. Are you a fan?
 ;D ;D ;D

Ed, I can say in all honesty that I have no idea whether Iain's a Rush fanatic or not. He's works as one an IT guy in our Manchester office and is a sound bloke - aside being a keen Stockport County fan and owning more Pentax kit than is good for anyone..... :o

However, seeing as you raised the subject, check out "Classic Rock" over the past couple of months and download "Clockwork Angels" - your ears will thank you for doing so. Lara, my mate Chas and I already have our tickets to see them in Manchester on 22nd May 2013.

I heard a few tracks from it and it does rock quite a bit more than they did in the 80's.
I guess, like they said on radio, that they've been taking their Geritol while recording it :)

Thanks all for the replies.
Yes, as Paul has said, I am a Stockport County fan, but don't let that put you off.
Also, I probably do have too much Pentax stuff, but who cares.....it's great stuff!
As for Rush, I don't have any of their music (as far as I know, but might be on compilation albums somewhere, but what I remember it is good stuff. Mind you I enjoy most music, as long is it is not rap or anything associated with a certain Mr S Cowell!
