Probably the actual cost of producing a print magazine without advertising or other sponsorship?
Popular Photography just shut down, both print and online. (and they had advertising) The print magazine has declined almost to extinction, not to mention real newspapers and other print media. Everyone (including me) has come to expect content to be free and so much of what we get that is free is worth exactly what we are willing to pay.

About five years ago I was involved with an art magazine, oversized and full color, each issue cost about $24 (to the buyer, not to print), per issue and it was of very high quality offset printing. Contributors were paid. It was made (so far as I know) with no intention of making a profit though, just as an outlet for artists and a way to get new talent a paid gig. $42 sounds high, but if they're wanting to make an actual profit with a quality product, that might very well be what they have to charge.

Yeah, I was wondering that. Not disputing that there must be some mention of $42 but I haven't seen it - but I have seen the EUR price at 9.80.
I suspect that a lot might also hinge upon branding. Whenever a new copy of Leica's "M" magazine is published, I buy it (£12 quarterly) as the photographers are usually excellent and the production quality is as good as I've seen. It can be downloaded and viewed on screen for free but I still prefer a hard copy. I also subscribe to the UK's "Black and White" magazine - but that's about it. The rest (mostly digital) tend to be little more than a series of adverts and "tests" masquerading as articles.

My mistake. That is the subscription price for 4 issues. My German is non-existent, so I just saw the number and assumed it was for an issue. Still, I have never seen a magazine where I thought the print quality was worth the price. Having said that, my experience is with US newsstand publications. Sorry for the confusion.

Don't worry. I suspected that price was related to a subscription, but as my German is also non-existent I just searched the price on the cover and found the 9,80 EUR :)
It's all clear now. To me that price can be considered reasonable only if the quality is good (articles, photos and paper)

I am one of the editors of PhotoKlassik Germany. PhotoKlassik -- the only print magazine in the world that focuses on film photography. We have already been sucessful for five years in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
We are at the moment working on our promotion video concerning the international issue.
First of all let me just give an Idea about the magazine itself. It will be not an english copy of the German issue and mainly focusing on the interantional market. The needs of German readers are definatly different. We will also publish articles from writers from all over the world.
The magazine will have always 100 pages and be printed on high quality paper like the German issue.

Well thats cool!!! To be honest when I was in a swedish super market I wanted to by simple milk.... I ended up with buttermilk in my coffee. Seems for germans swedish is the bigger challange ;D

Just a small outlook!
Thats the cover for the International Issue.
We had for our promotion video great support. The introduction for the project is done by the lady on the cover. US born native english speaker. She plays the first violine at the Frankfurt symphony orchestra.

I can't remember the last time all the headers on the frontpage of a magazine interested me -kudos! :)
the german-swedish challenge made me laugh :D those I know of german descent learn the language quite well but they sure hang on to their german pronunciation :D

Ok the promised update!
I can give now some hardfacts about the english version "PhotoKlassik International"
We expect the promotion video to be ready comming week. After final aproval we will launch the Kickstarter Project.
The magazine will be printed as the german issue in the same quality (high quality paper) and contain 100 pages per issue
The special offer for kickstarter backers will be for the first year subscription, quarterly issue, yearly price for will be 49 $ including shipment to your homeadress to any country in the world except PRC or North Korea. The normal subscription price after the Kickstarter will be 60$ and can be made via the PhotoKlassik website.
We are targeting at the moment to deliver the first issue by october this year!

A quick search says no. Curious, they put the video out, but nothing about the campaign. :( Maybe they are re-thinking in light of the Kodachrome release?

We noticed this trend in Germany. I get very often e-mails from our readers who tell me about their first impression at the newsstand. They tell me that the feel and smell of paper is so impressive!
I still remember myself...when I was a kid in the late seventies. Every Monday there was a magazine for kids and teenagers with a gimmick and comics. Every Monday I went to the bookshop with 2 Marks 50 in my hands opened the door and I still remember the smell of printed paper. The lady already knew me and had my copy alrady under the desk. I went home laid on the sofa and read it while eating a package of HARIBO gummy bears.
To be honest I am glad that I expierenced this time!
So I love magazines in print!

I must admit to loving the smell of paper and printing ink.
In the next town, there is a small independent bookstore where I just love going even if they don't have a great art book selection. They have some old creaking wood floors and the intoxicating smell of ink paper and wood is always present.

We really belive in film and printed image. It was a hard job of negotiations to get this project organize so that it would not exceed a certain price level. We didn't want to sell our magazine for 20$ plus shipping but we also did not want to reduce the print quality. That's why our goal is so high.
We hope that we can find enough supporters who belive in film and print.

I think all hope is lost on this kickstarter, 4 days to go and only a fraction of the goal has been pledged. That's a pity, because judging by the original magazine this could have been very good. I think I will have to subscribe to the German version and start brushing up on my rusty German.
