the weekend thread 19 April 2013
« on: April 18, 2013, 10:19:14 PM »
From a sunny day last weekend - a recently cut reed bed near Brancaster.  Reed is cut from the marshes along the North Norfolk coast from December to April, continuing a centuries long tradition.  Most reed continues to be used for thatching roofs.  Areas of reed bed are cleared on rotation, creating a patchwork effect and helping to maintain this marshland habitat.

Just as the lambing came into full swing up here, the waether got horrible - wind and rain. The little sheeps were getting cold and what have you. Mr Crofter and Dad Crofter had to remake their beds a few times, rub the little fellas down to get them dry and, when all else failed the kitchen became their haven. There were five sheeps-lettes in there yesterday. One Hebridean and four white woollie-backs!

The lens got wet on the Minolta 505si - hence the blobs! Rollei-400s

Great stuff indeed, from the timeless look of the first image, to the vibrant colors at the end, all are excellent.  I'm especially drawn to the price tags in China.  Not sure why, but I love to look at them.

Thank goodness, I can breathe again. Great results. You've probably already discovered that it does very odd things when it's not level :o Of course, it can be useful in that way too.

@16mman: Thanks!

@Phil: Had I known you'd been holding your breath all this time I would have been more quick about it! The level thing is the reason I got the one with the bubble level built in. Unfortunately I don't have a ball-head tripod which would make it easier to set it level, so it takes a little more adjusting. But a ball-head tripod is next on my list (it'll be a while though). I haven't been able to use it successfully with the angle finder yet. I focus with the Focus Screen Adapter and Reflex Viewfinder (both of which, fortunately, I was able to find around the time I bought the camera). So I'm using it like a 4x5 really. It's a meditative process, but I like it. Unfortunately Central Park is a seriously crowded nowadays (it used to be nice and quiet) so I couldn't do a lot of shooting. Too many people planting themselves in my shots. The nerve!

Wow! You are using the RMFX! I always hand hold and use my third eye to watch the level! Unless of course I am using a tripod for exposures of more than  a second. I always feel that I ought to be using a tripos more and indeed the focusing screen more!

You might enjoy this set http://www.flickr.com/photos/dirtyday/sets/72157594460985593/ Levi used the RMFX for these which prompted me to buy one. I do need to apply myself!

This week I've managed to shoot, develop, and scan some redscaled images, on the third attempt. My first attempt failed because when I respooled, I didn't tape the film end well enough, and the robust winding mechanism of a Canon FTb ripped the film out the spool. Second time, my C41 chemicals were exhausted. Third time, most of the images were spoiled by light leaks, but a few were usable. These were taken around Walt Disney World in Orlando on a Konica C35 scale-focus compact and respooled Kodak Gold 200 film, purchased for 16p a roll. The film was rated at ISO40, so 2.33 extra stops given.

I'm just remembering your example in the postcard thread, of the red boots with the black and white striped socks.

Now I know what to do with two old rolls of Gold 200 I have lying about. Hope to contribute tomorrow, once my pinholes from today have dried.

Brilliant pinhole, Paul.

The plan was to get beyond the rain and give a newly refurbed Isolette a work out through all the speeds.  But I chanced upon a Scouts' parade in Narberth (apparently it is scouts' day) and ran through the roll right there.

Isolette III, Solinar 75/3.5, Neopan 400, (yes, one of my last rolls.)

Finally got the scans of first test roll of outdated Fuji Neopan 400CN (2005 - as discussed in another thread)- result looks very normal to me. Taken with Bronica ETRSi. I often go back to this building - it reminds me of the Bauhaus architecture.
